Colorado sculptor Craig Bergsggard is a self-made storyteller of America's 19th-century history when intrepid individuals poured into the West. His bronzes capture the spirit of the people who made the Wild West their home. "It was all about survival" he says.

Craig believes that an authentic portrayal of the past is the only way to tell his stories. A stickler for historical correctness, he ensures that everything from guns to clothing is properly represented.

"Coolin' the Dogs" is a miniature of the Fountain Hills public art piece next to Town Hall on the corner of Avenue of the Fountains and La Montana Drive.

Bergsggard personally understands the call of the West, leaving his home state of Minnesota in the 1980's to create a new life in Windsor, Colorado with his wife JoAnn and their dog and cat. Craig also maintains a studio in Arizona during the annual Fine Art Expo in Scottsdale.

This sculpture was purchased by the Miles' from the artist in 2009.

Loveland, Colorado bronze artist Bobbie K. Carlyle creates sculptures that are imaginative, inspirational, and exude vitality. She received her fine art degree from Brigham Young University and has studied under many notable modern artists. Her strength, while reflecting a love for classic sculpture, is in defining the essence of the subject, and interpreting the psychological aspects of self-realization, worth, and growth. Her works are internationally renowned and collected. Some of her installations can be seen in San Diego, CA, Cheyenne, and Green River, WY, and Fountain Hills, AZ.

"Self-Made Man" is a miniature of her Fountain Hills public art piece, which can be seen next to the library as you enter the Community Center.

Formerly an illustrator, Martha Pettigrew has established herself as one of the foremost contemporary sculptors. She graduated from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and has received
many prestigious awards. Her work has been exhibited in prestigious exhibitions such as the Annual Exhibition of the American Academy of Equine Artists, Lexington, Kentucky; the Great American West Show in Tucson, AZ; the Loveland High Plains Art Council's Sculpture in the Park, and the Phippen Museum in Prescott, AZ.

Pettigrew has four bronzes on display in the Fountain Hills public art collection: "Second Mesa Maiden" in Fountain Park; "The Enduring Spirit" in the Community Center; "Dewey" (the rabbit) and "Where Have All the Mammoths Gone?" in the Centennial Circle.

This piece on auction is a miniature of "Dewey".

The late Carlos Hadaway was born in Portsmouth, VA and raised in San Diego, CA.
Born with cataracts, he lost his sight when he was 10. After six operations, he regained his sight. "When the doctors took the bandages off my eyes, I was so impressed with color that I started cartooning," Hadaway said. While in high school, Carlos created the original logo for the San Diego Padres, the little bat-swinging Friar.

Then he joined the Navy. "All the guys on my ship were cowboys from Arizona, and they asked me to go back and cowboy with them when our tour was up. It's the best thing I ever did," said Carlos. That is when he launched
his professional art career and became known as The Arizona Kid.

Carlos lived in Fountain Hills with his wife Nancy, and he was frequently seen walking with his many friends around Fountain Park.
Carlos participated in top shows in all the western states, garnering numerous awards, including Best of Show in Tempe's Festival of the Arts, and the George Phippen Popular Award in Prescott. One of his paintings hangs in the Arizona State Capitol. It was presented to the State of Arizona by Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor. He created a series of six western prints featuring Budweiser for Anheuser-Busch which became a collector's item.

In 1994 Carlos was Grand Marshal for the world's oldest rodeo, Prescott Frontier Days. And in 1992, he was Grand Marshal at the Pine Country Pro Rodeo in Flagstaff. In 1999, the Scottsdale Parada Del Sol commissioned Carlos to create the original artwork for its 2000 celebration. One of Carlos' creations, "Winters View", hangs in the Fountain Hills Community Center.

That in a nutshell is the biography of Ft. Collins
artist Randy Hand. His artwork on display at the annual Loveland Art Show resulted in three
pieces ending up in the Fountain Hills Public Art Collection: "Bob the Frog" and "George the Tortoise" at Fountain Park, and "Need a Lift?" in the Centennial Circle.

The resin sculpture being auctioned, "Duck Blind", is a great example of Hand's sense of humor.

Born in 1949 in Gainsville, Texas, Donna Howell-Sickles was raised on a 900-acre farm. Her family moved to New Mexico, where she graduated from high school. She earned her BFA from Texas Tech University in Lubbock,
Texas. About that time, a friend gave her a vintage postcard depicting a cowgirl atop her horse. The charm and confidence of the old-time cowgirl fascinated her, and greatly influenced her art. Her studio in Frisco, Texas, contains her mixed-media paintings of high-spirited, fun-loving cowgirls in a variety of environments. "I am dealing with confidence and a feeling of self-power and the joy of realizing that where you are at any moment is wonderful," she says.

Howell-Sickles works on paper and canvas with charcoal, pastel and acrylics. Her work is rich with symbolism and allusions to classical mythology. She has recently begun working in bronze.

The piece on auction "Postcard Cowgirl" is a lithograph. Howell-Sickels says, "The cowgirl has become my icon for women in general. She gives us someone of warmth and humor and with whom we can share a good laugh.
I'm a very happy person and I like sharing my outlook."

The California Institute of the Arts(CalArts) is
a private art university in Santa Clarita, Calif. It
was incorporated in 1961 as the first degree-granting institution of higher learning in the US created specifically for students of both the visual and performing arts. This was Walt Disney's concept. It was a departure from the traditional compartmentalized university or college. Through the merger of Chouinard Art Institute and the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music, CalArts opened in 1971, creating a total environment in which training, experiment and
performance encourages individual excellence and an integration of the arts.

Disney Artists and Friends of Cal Arts (DAFCA) started holding annual shows in California. All paintings, photographs, and sculptures on display were offered by artists for sale for the benefit of Cal Arts and to help with student tuition.

"The Ostrich" by Julita Jones, is a two-piece serigraph donated for sale by the artist to the eleventh annual DAFCA show, held in June 1979.

Bronze sculptor Kimber Fiebiger had been an artist all her life. After earning a BFA in sculpture from the University of Minnesota, she began making her living as a potter, creating a popular line of Humpty Dumpty sculptures.
As soon as she could afford the casting costs, she made a variety of bronze works, ranging from small dancers and jesters to giant fountains and other outdoor commissions. Kimber's pieces express a range of emotions along with wit and humor.

The Fountain Hills Public Art collect
ion includes Fiebiger's "Humpty Dumpty". It is
located in the Town library.

Laing lives in Apache Junction, AZ. He began his artistic career after the untimely death of his father in 1991. "My father was always going to be a fine arts artist when he retired. Unfortunately, he died of leukemia before
then. Life is too short to not follow your dreams."

"I love to create. To begin with a planar material and turn it into something with movement and light is what drives me."

His work has received national recognition, and is collected internationally. He has created a number of site-specific corporate designs throughout the country. Laing's piece "The Enduring Family" is part of the Fountain Hills Public Art collection. It can be seen on the
east side of the Centennial Circle.

In our auction, "Serenity" is a smaller copy of the mother figure in The Enduring Family.

The late Jon Lightfoot was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1939 to a Cherokee father and a Swedish mother. He attended grade school on the Cherokee reservation in Oklahoma and high school in Tucson, Arizona. Lightfoot later moved to New York, where he pursued his primary interests, theater and commercial art.
Lightfoot studied under modernist painter Lowell Nesbitt for three years, then traveled to Italy and began painting figures. He returned to Tucson in 1971, and by 1974 he was devoting all of his time to painting, developing a personal style of painting which incorporated realistic Native American faces with abstracted backdrops and blanket designs. He died in 2018.

Sculptor George Lundeen has his studio in Loveland, CO. A Fullbright-Hayes Scholarship sent George to Florence, Italy, for a year. There is a quiet beauty, where style flows into expert design, in his bronzes. He has done commissions and portraits for Nike, Drake University, Denver International Airport, and Statuary Hall in Washington, D.C. And he is the recipient of many awards, including Allied Artists of America, the National Academy of Design, and the National Sculpture Society.
George has done portraits of several historic figures such as Ben Franklin, Thomas Jefferson and Robert Frost, and his sculptures can be found in collections throughout the world.

The Fountain Hills Public Art collection includes several of his works- "Joy of Music" in the Centennial Circle; "Aviator" near the Veterans Memorial Park; "Old Friends" in the lobby of the Library-Museum; and "Jefferson"
and "Washington" (joint works with his brother Mark Lundeen) at Fountain Park.

Ed Mell was born in Phoenix in 1943. He always loved to draw cars, but did not discover his vocation as an artist until junior college. He went on to graduate with a BFA in illustration from the Art Center in Los Angeles in 1967, and then proceeded to New York to develop a successful career in commercial and
advertising art.

Mell spent the summer of 1971 on the Hopi reservation in Arizona, teaching art to Hopi children and soaking up the incredible landscape and vast skies. He returned to commercial art work in Phoenix, painting landscapes part-time, but as his paintings became better known, he finally devoted himself to painting full time. His works are distinctive because he eliminates extraneous elements and details to create spacious, bold masses and geometric shapes with mystical light.

David is a Native American artist and musician. The son of a Methodist minister, his heritage is from the Delaware and Mohawk tribes.

The artist decorated the back of carved chair with turquoise and coral inlay which was used by the Pope in 1987 on his visit to Phoenix. The chair is now in the Smithsonian. Montour carves wooden flutes (which may take more than a month to complete), one of which is owned by Willie Nelson. He plays his flutes in a band named Native Sky, and has appeared in commercials, documentaries, Good
Morning America and several motion pictures.

He sculpts in alabaster and bronze, and his piece "Wedding Pot" led to his invitation for a one-man show at the Smithsonian in July, 1990. He then was commissioned to create a giant-sized bronze for the Fort McDowell
casino in Arizona. For several years, Montour was an artist-in-residence at the The Heard Museum in Phoenix.

Santa Fe artist Ralph Roybal was reared in the Southwest. He is an active member of the Santa Fe Artist League and serves on
the board of the Santa Fe Society of Artists.
He tries to recreate the history and culture of the American West. A favorite of collectors is his series of historical portraits of famous American Indian Chiefs, portraying their strength, pride and spirit. Roybal applies a rich polychrome patina to each of his pieces to bring life, detail and texture to the bronzes.

Sir Leslie Ward was a British portrait artist and caricaturist who over four decades painted 1,325 portraits which were regularly published by Vanity Fair, under the pseudonyms "Spy" and "Drawl". The portraits were produced as watercolours and turned into chromolithographs for publication in the magazine. These were then usually reproduced on better paper and sold as prints. Such was his influence in the genre that all Vanity Fair caricatures are sometimes referred to as "Spy cartoons" regardless of who the artist actually was.

Early portraits, almost always full-length (judges at the bench being the main exception), had a stronger element of caricature and usually distorted the proportions of the body, with a very large head and upper body supported on much smaller lower parts. Later, as he became socially accepted in the society in which he moved to gain access to his subjects, and not wishing to cause offence, his style developed into what he called "characteristic portraits", being less of a caricature and more of an actual portrait of the subject, using realistic body proportions.
