Artist Bio:

Brett Weston established a distinct style in the very first images he created at the age of fourteen. His sense of design with an emphasis on repeating forms, divided planes of lights and darks, and the contrast of textures, man-made or from the natural world and the body, had more in common with Cubist painting than anything that had come before it in photography. His work was included in the Film und Foto exhibition in Stuttgart, Germany (1929), recognized as the most important avant-garde exhibition of its time.

Weston's career stretched beyond sixty years, eclipsing straight photography and American modernism. No photographer in the history of the medium has been as involved with the natural landscape over such a long period nor has explored abstraction as thoroughly as Weston and few photographers of this genre have traveled as extensively or dealt with as broad a range of subject matter.

Artist Bio:

Alec Soth was born in 1969 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He studied at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, New York. Soth received international acclaim when his photographs were featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 2004 Whitney and Sao Paulo Biennials.

Soth has had over fifty solo exhibitions including survey shows organized by the Jeu de Paume in Paris (2008), the Walker Art Center in Minnesota (2010), the Media Space in London (2015) . In 2016, Soth's Gathered Leaves, an exhibition which brought together his four signature series - Sleeping by the Mississippi, Niagara, Broken Manual, and Songbook, traveled to a number of institutions, including The Finnish Museum of Photography in Helsinki. Soth continues to exhibit worldwide, with recent solo exhibitions the Helmond Museum in the Netherlands (2021), the Kunst Haus Wien in Vienna and the Shanghai Xiang Cheng Center of Photography (2020) and the Blanton Museum of Art in Austin, TX and the Haus der Photographie in Hamburg (2017), amongst others.

His work is in the permanent collections of numerous museums, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the High Museum of Art, Atlanta; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Brooklyn Museum of Art, New York; the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; amongst others. Soth is also a member of Magnum Photos.

Soth lives and works in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Artist Bio:

Since the late 1980s, Stan Douglas (b. 1960) has created films and photographs-and more recently theater productions and other multidisciplinary projects-that investigate the parameters of their medium. His ongoing inquiry into technology's role in image-making, and how those mediations infiltrate and shape collective memory has resulted in works that are at once specific in their historical and cultural references and broadly accessible. Since the beginning of his career, photography has been a central focus of Douglas's practice, utilized at first as a means of preparing for his films and eventually as a powerful pictorial tool in its own right.

The artist is influenced in particular by media theorist Vilem Flusser's notion of the photographic image as an encoded language that is determined by a specific set of technological, social, cultural, and political circumstances.

The present work belongs to a series of photographs by Douglas documenting post-revolutionary Havana, a place, as Douglas notes, "full of evidence of an unfinished revolution." For the artist, the city's architecture provides ample reminders that Cuba's utopian Modernist (and later communist) ideals did not always turn out as planned. Focusing on neighborhoods not typically featured in tourist books and sightseeing tours, including El Vedado, Cerro, and Miramar, Douglas presents buildings and places that demonstrate the change in the original use of these structures over the course of history.

Another edition of the present work is in the collection of the National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa.

Artist Bio:

Coming to prominence in the late 1970s with the so-called Pictures Generation group, Cindy Sherman's ground-breaking photographs have interrogated themes around representation, artifice, and identity in contemporary media for over four decades. Her work continues to channel and reconstruct familiar personas known to the collective psyche, often in unsettling ways. She has been the subject of one-person exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery, London (2019) and the Museum of Modern Art, New York (2012). She has received such awards as the Praemium Imperiale, an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award, a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, and a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship.

At daybreak, Waurá Indians travel by canoe to collect the "waiting net" that caught fish overnight. During major festivals, communities expecting visits from other villages prepare copious extra food to welcome and feed guests during their stay, and so they will have food to take with them on the journey home. Graduated as an economist, Sebastião Salgado began his career as a photographer in 1973 in Paris, working with the Sygma, Gamma and Magnum Photos photo agencies. Today, with Lelia Wanick Salgado, his life and work partner, he has his own structure. He has travelled to more than 100 countries for his photographic projects, which, in addition to innumerous publications in the international press, have been presented in several books and exhibitions -conceived and designed by Lelia - such as "Sahel, l'homme en detresse", "Other Americas", "Workers", "Terra", "Exodus", "Africa", "Genesis" and "Gold". He is a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts de France, Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur, Doctor Honoris Causa of Harvard University (USA), and his major honours include the Primo Levi Prize (Italy), the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade and the Praemium Imperiale Prize of the Japan Art Association, considered to be the Nobel Prize of the Arts. In 1998, he and Lelia set up Instituto Terra in Brazil, a non-profit civil organisation focusing on reforestation, environmental education and sustainable rural development in the Rio Doce valley, in the state of Minas Gerais. Today, Instituto Terra has created a forest rich in a variety of flora and fauna endemic to the Atlantic Forest. In 2021, the couple launched their latest project: a book and major photographic exhibition on the Amazon rain forest and its indigenous communities, calling for the preservation of this biodiversity that is so important for the planet and for the protection of these threatened populations.

Artist Bio:

Annie Leibovitz began publishing her work in Rolling Stone in 1970. The magazine was then a groundbreaking voice of the counterculture and she was still a student at the San Francisco Art Institute. She was Rolling Stone's chief photographer by 1973. Ten years later, when she left Rolling Stone to join Vanity Fair and then Vogue, her photographs had become widely recognizable and distinctive interpretations of the contemporary landscape. Her large and distinguished body of work encompasses some of the most well-known and influential portraits of our time.

Artist Bio:

Mickalene Thomas is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist whose work has yielded instantly recognizable and widely celebrated aesthetic languages within contemporary visual culture. She is known for her elaborate portraits of Black women composed of rhinestones, acrylic, and enamel. Not only do her masterful mixed-media paintings, photographs, films and installations command space, they occupy eloquently while dissecting the intersecting complexities of black and female identity within the Western canon. Outside of her core practice, Thomas is a Tony Awards nominated co-producer, curator, educator and mentor to many emerging artists. She is also the Co-Founder of Pratt>FORWARD and founder of Art>FORWARD Artist in the Market incubator for post-graduate students.
