In short, the El Cazadore ship was dispatched by Carolus III, The Bourbon King of Spain, on October 20, 1783, from New Orleans, LA to Vera Cruz, Mexico where she was loaded with nearly 14 tons of silver pesos and other denominations. Upon her return to New Orleans, the vessel, crew, and fortune disappeared in a winter storm and sank without a trace. Discovered many years later, the El Cazadore made it within 50 miles of the New Orleans destination. This loss was known as "The Shipwreck that led to the Louisiana Purchase" because this money was to be used to help Spain retain that land. Instead, with the loss of the coins, Spain lost Louisiana to France's Napoleon who then sold the land to the United States.
This coin's denomination is 2 Reales minted in Mexico City in 1763.
