New Friendships - Friendship Manor

As a group, New Friendships residents got together to talk about spring and some of their favorite things about the season, things they remembered happening, and things they are experiencing now.

There were more memories of how flowers were grown and tended to in their gardens at home or the bees that buzz outside.

Together these scenes reminded them of spring times past and present, of gardens both from home and the ones at New Friendships, but best of all, these paintings brought them all together to create and enjoy each other's company.

Bickford of Davenport

This is a unique pairing of paintings both by Jodie.

Midnight Sky: Jodie was inspired to paint the colors of the night sky following prompts to share memories related to the shape of the star. She recalled the various hues of blue, purple, and black during the night.

The Sunset of New Mexico: Jodie shared her favorite memory of the sun as a shape and color. She recalled sitting on her porch after a long days work, being warmed by the last rays of the day. Jodie was remembering the various shades like umber, yellow, pinks, and blues. Jodie reminisced while painting her time in Las Cruces and Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Pedro used a medium-sized paintbrush to create this masterpiece. He used red, orange, and teal for his colors. When he was done painting, he nodded and sat his brushes down. Another resident was painting with him and asked him what his painting was.

Pedro could not comprehend what the resident was asking, for his main language is Spanish. A bi-lingual staff member translated for the resident and Pedro responded "a blanket for my wife."

The Fountains Senior Living

This is a collaborative piece created by some of the residents living at the Cascades at Fountains Senior Living. Everyone helped in some way to make this piece come to life!

The best part about art is it can be perceived or viewed in a lot of different ways. When you look at this piece you might see a face or a bunch of shapes glued together.

But the people behind the paintbrush make the piece. All different ages, backgrounds, families, professions, and stories, but they all have one thing in common ... some form of dementia.

Residents talked about rain and how after it the sun peeks out and you get rainbows. They talked about how rainbows remind them of the Bible verse "Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth"" (Genesis 9:16).

This idea inspired the group to paint the rain, sun, and then the rainbow that follows.

Bio: Isaac Stewart is a Biology Professor at Black Hawk College - East Campus. He teaches, lectures, and continues to research in the field of Entomology. His vast knowledge ranges through all species, but he holds a special love and interest in Bumble Bees, helping to get the Rusty Patch Bumble Bee onto the endangered species list.
