The cigar-chomping son of a powerful Congressman, an illustrious political fixer with a weakness for modern art, a Watergate-era dirty trickster, the city's favorite cocktail party host…these were the sorts of men who now ran Washington. Over four decades, they'd chart new ways to turn their clients' cash into political leverage, abandoning favor-trading in smoke-filled rooms for increasingly sophisticated tactics like "shadow lobbying," where underground campaigns sparked seemingly organic public outcries to pressure lawmakers into taking actions that would ultimately benefit corporate interests rather than the common good. With billions of dollars at play, these lobbying dynasties enshrined in Washington a pro-business consensus that would guide the country's political leaders-Democrats and Republicans alike-allowing companies to flourish even as ordinary Americans buckled under the weight of stagnant wages, astronomical drug prices, unsafe home loans, and digital monopolies. A good lobbyist could kill even a piece of legislation supported by the president, both houses of Congress, and a majority of Americans.
Yet, nothing lasts forever. Amidst a populist backlash to the soaring inequality these lobbyists helped usher in, Washington's pro-business alliance suddenly began to unravel. And while new ways for corporations to control the federal government would emerge, the men who'd once built K Street found themselves under legal scrutiny and on the verge of financial collapse. One had his namesake firm ripped away by his own colleagues. Another watched his business shut down altogether. One went to prison. And one was found dead behind the 18th green of an exclusive golf club, with a bottle of $1,500 wine at his feet and a bullet in his head.

Pop your collar, invert your visor and stuff your cargo shorts with a six pack of Busch Light, because it's 2002 and you're headed to a backyard flip cup tournament. Contestants will line up on either side of a poorly constructed folding table and amid a flurry of red plastic cups and revolting trash talk, battle until a winner is declared (or we lose track of the score).
You will scream and cheer until your throat is sore. Your bookstore-bought flip flops will become saturated in beer foam and wet grass and completely disintegrate. You will treat yourself to low-quality pizza, 90's rap, snacks, other backyard games and impromptu "naps" in a lawn chair while you regroup and rally. You will relive the days before kids, before jobs, before any semblance of responsibility or decorum.
This throwback throwdown of millennial proportions will be fueled by the absolute cheapest beer available in a keg. When the party's over, you'll be thrown into an Uber with a commemorative beer koozie to prove that you were at the greatest afternoon party since you got your fake ID from Jesse out back of the 7-11. And that you can totally still hang.
Now go home and sleep it off.
PS - bring your own camp chair if you want somewhere to sit.

This year we are donating the 5th grade quilt to Dr. B to commemorate her last 5th grade graduating class at Lafayette. A little birdie in the front office told us really, really wanted it and we can't think of a better 5th grade class gift to give her recognizing her 10 years of service! Support this cause by donating $25!
This year's 5th grade quilt is inspired by the traditional "flying geese" pattern in rich warm and cool colors. Every 5th grader learned about the role of quilt making in American history and about the possible role of quilts in the Underground Railroad. Each 5th grade student hand sewed a patch on our quilt and interested students combined those patches into a quilt top using the sewing machines. Finally, students tied colorful knots to adhere the quilt "sandwich" together and all our students signed the back. Thank you to parent and grandparent volunteers for their assistance with our hand and machine sewing, to grandparent Grace Clarke for cutting and marking sewing lines on all the fabrics, and to 5th grader Nava Zwerdling for the final design!Donated by Laurie McLaughlin and the Lafayette 5th Graders

If you are interested in qualifying for the French Open in Paris we will have a round-robin tournament for 3.0-5.0 players on Saturday June 8th from 10:00-12:30 at Lafayette-Pointer Park. We will have drinks and snacks. We will also have some loaner rackets provided by The Tennis Zone Plus if your racket is letting you down. You don't need a partner. Round Robin will be with multiple partners.
