The quilt design I (Ellen) made was inspired by Rae Senarighi's art "You Are Loved" billboards and signs. The fabric for this quilt was paid for by my dad and step-mom (Andy's mom and step-dad) and this quilt was hand quilted by Ellen's mom (Jeri Lijewski). It's safe to say my family loves all humans and especially supports LGBTQ+ youth. This quilt size is greate for Sunday afternoon naps! We hope it spreads Love & Joy wherever it goes! Honoring my step-brother Andrew Cray who passed away from cancer in 2014: in his short adult life, he played a central role in securing new nationwide LGBTQ nondiscrimination protections as part of the Affordable Care Act, partnering with the White House and Department of Health and Human Services to create the Out2Enroll initiative to connect LGBTQ+ people with health insurance coverage options, assisting with the passage of the HOPE Act to make organ donation and transplantation more accessible to people with HIV, and drafting new provisions addressing the needs of LGBTQ youth for the Runaway and Homeless Youth Act.

I enjoyed positioning and repositioning the blocks in this quilt in order to get the right colors in the right places, to set up the color transitions. I fell in love with the idea of a table runner on my summer table that made all welcome to our table.

The quilt started out with colored fabric for the large square blocks. But to me it looked like what I call "color/pattern overload" with no place for the eye to rest. I had it on my design wall. and when I took off all of the large colored squares the white of my design wall showed thr and I liked it much better. So I found the grey/white fabric and replaced all of those colored large bloks and then added a border so the small colored design seemed to float. What started out as one of my least favorite quilts is now one I just love. Backing is a fun, colorful pritn of parakeets in tree branches borded by a deep peach color.

My friend, Christine Robinson, gave me the rainbow blocks to piece. I found the background, borders, and backing fabric on a quiet bus trip. The backing fabric was chosen to honor two men that I admire. Kelton B. is currently starring in New York musical theater productions. John H. has also starred in productions but has since married and resides in New York. These young men have thrived in the creative community and I support others as they also pursue their dreams.

As a teen member of the trans queer community I know how important GSAFE is. Youth like me are targeted and used as political pawns. Our rights are being threatened, all for the hopes of political gain and with no consideration or care for the impact these threats have on lives like mine. GSAFE is working hard to protect youth like me by making sure schools are safe for LGBTQ+ youth as well as being a voice in the political conversation in protecting lives like mine outside of school. Making this quilt was my opportunity to support GSAFE's efforts.

"This is an improv quilt inspired by a class I took with Lucy Engels. The flowers are both improv paper pieced and needle-turn applique. All of the quilting is done by hand - I love hand quilting! I've always loved having fresh flowers, but during the pandemic I started treating myself to a bouquet of flowers every week to bring a little life and color into quarantine". This quilt is based on a circa 1840 quilt made up of one inch diamonds. I chose a more modern big block interpretation using bright, bold, solid colors for the star. In the background you will find your favorite tween dancing to her favorite tune. The batting is "Dream Green" 100% polyester made from recycled plastic bottles. Here's what the creator has to say: I had always wanted to take a class with Ami Simms. She taught her Dancing Spools pattern at our quilt guild in Lodi. The pattern was a bit too traditional for me, so I modernized the colors and added a graphic border of fussy cut checkerboard fabric and black and white triangles. It was beautifully quilted by Susan Bolte with feathers and checkerboards.

The quilts I made this year center on the Alison Glass Art Theory Night and Day, Abacus, Ex Libris, and Sun Print fabrics. I picked them for the rainbow of colors the focus fabrics offer, and because those big, bright circles are teeming with energy and joy. It's that energy and joy that GSAFE brings to their work, and to the schools, staff, and students they serve in supporting and creating safe spaces where our LGBTQ+ students can belong, be seen, thrive, and find joy. ( I did throw in a rainbow chicken wire fabric - there's joy in that, too - and one Mr. Domestic fabric because he has also been an advocate for racial justice and LGBTQ+ and donated to this event in the past.) I believe in and appreciate the work the GSAFE does in our local community and across the state, as an educator, leader, and parent. I am a longtime supporter of GSAFE and donated an art quilt to the silent auction at the May Celebration of Leadership several years ago. Artist Statement:

As a teacher for many years and the mother of a gay man GSAFE's mission is near and dear to my heart. All children need our support!

This quilt was made by myself in my current city of Chiang Mai, Thailand. I have lived and worked there for going on 7 years. As such, I designed this quilt with Thai motis in mind. The large shapes are called the Thai Lotus. This motif is widely seen throughtout the North of Thailand. Additionally, I have incorporated a number of elephant prints to highlight the importance of elephants in Thai culture. However, I wanted to maintain some western styles of patchwork, such as the Ohio stars in red. The prints have the alphabet highlighting my work as an English teacher. The blue lotus used a maritime motif, representing my love for the sea when I was younger. The black prints on the diamonds and the border represent the deep importance of music while tryint to figure out my identity and throughout my life. This quilt was pieced and quilted on my Singer 91-15 Scotland 1948 machine. It is a forward stitch only and is treadle powered.

The fabric in this quilt is a mixture of modern prints, and the design combines the two traditional patterns of rail fence and nine patch. This quilt started with many scraps of teal/blue (my favorite color). As I was arranging the pieces, I realized that the lack of diversity made for a quilt that looked like a blob. Adding the white greatly improved the overall appearance, and the pink was a fun finishing touch.

She passed away when I was 4, but her love for the ocean, water, and beach stay with me. I also liked how cute the animals and fabric were and think she would have approved. As a teacher, I came to know students in teh LGBTQ+ school community, who, as teenagers, struggled to find themselves and their place in the world. In helping them, it was as much a learnng experience for me as for them. I learned of their many concerns, and sadly, for some, I was not a fast enough learner. For others, I was a part of their support system as they matured into adulthood and fou nd their places in society. Now, as a grandmother, I am able to support my grandchild in this life journey.

I saw in the Madison Quilt Show info book that GSAFE will be doing and online auction. This quilt was made by my great grandmother in 1915 or so. It is a "Liberty Tree" or "Tree of Life" pattern...my mothers terms for the patterns. It is in excellent condition and seems to have never been used. My great grandmother lived in the Bancroft/Almond/Wild Rose area and was an active quilter with other family members and friends.

If only hearts grew on trees! This cross stitched project has hearts bursting from branches of a tree. It was done on 14 ct. Aida cloth, and was professionally framed. No glass on frame.

This purse was made by my friend, Lynda Johnson, of Rockford, IL. There is a peacock feather on the front, an appliqued green anole lizard on the back, and a small pocket inside. There is hand beading on both the front and back. Lynda and her husband are avid bird and nature watchers, and were involved with bird banding at the Sand Bluff Bird Observatory for many years.

The Green Anole on the back of this shimmering green bag is common in the southern USA. The male spreads his orange neck to attract a female or warn off other males. I found the Peacock feather while birding at the Nygren Wetland Preserve! It's not native to Illinois, but perhaps a runaway from a local farm or victim of a predator? Enjoy its beauty! I hope this purse reminds you of the beauty and wonder of the natural world.

This is a long, slightly triangular shawl knitted with fine superwash merino wool knit using a pattern called Breathe and Hope. Ths shawl is long and narrow makign it perfect for use as a scarf, as well as draping it over shoulders in a cool room.

It took 3 starts before I found the perfect colors to work with the gently changing colors in some sections and the contrasting stripes in others. We are all different! The hearts in this quilt were made by different members of the Madison Modern Quilt Guild. Bill Hoernke "won" the block lottey and put this guild together. I love Kaffle Fassett's bold floral designs! I chose this quilt pattern so I could cut large pieces and feature the fabric in this collection. The pieced stripe, down the back, was a happy accident. I ran out of the blue fabric, so I added the stripe to fill out the rest of the quitl back. Now it's one of my favorite parts of the design.

Each panel is slightly different to emphasize seeing light through stained glass.

All of the paintbox colors. The white background fabric helps the colorful squares to pop out. Eacch square has an intricate quilting pattern which lends a fine texture. The quilting thread is a pastel rainbue colored thread. This is very well made and intricately sewn with an included sleeve, on the back, for hanging. An additional line of rectangles, with each fabric sample runs over the backside. Either side would be a delight for display.

NOTE: There is a very slight bleeding of some of the fabric colors onto the white, on the front side.

The colors seem to pop right off of this quilt! Beautifully designed and quilted, this is sure to be a favorite addition to your home. This does have a sleeve of fabric on the back if you want to hang it.

This rainbow scarf began as a way to bring color into my days throughout a cold WI winter, and to use the remnant yarn I found in my stash. The colors contrast and flow from one to another. This thick and cozy scarf will brighten many winter days to come!

I'm in awe of both the amazing work of GSAFE and the talented quilters. I like being involved in my small way. It feels good to craft a piece and imagine that someone with similar love and hopes for our community will have it someday.

This quilt is about generational transformation. The top layer was crafted from a variety of fabric pieces in the early 1950's but then packed away and unfinished. The middle layer is a well-loved but forgotten duvet from the 70's. The two were then painstakingly united by hand-stitching a new layer of soft (but strong) fabric that will provide warmth and comfort when needed.

Note from auction organizers: Please note that likely due to being in storage and time the antique quilt top does show some discoloration in two areas that we were able to minimize with washing, but can still be observed in person. Regardless, this quilt is well-made and incredibly cozy, warm, heavy, and HUGE. We all love it!

The green cabled scarf flows organically for a touch of movement. The windowpane cowl is knit in two contrasting colors for an architectural look. And the long black cowl has sparkles of neon color and hidden cable detailing. All are hand washable in wool cleanser, lay flat to dry.

Make a wish! Magical dandelion fluff patterned fabric. Appealing pastel toned colors, with peach, greys, and light greens Gorgeous fabrics, with delicate, sparkly gold accents. Triple bordered with mitered corner tabs, to frame this piece. "Joy" spelled out along one of the borders. All fabrics seem to be from the same fabric line and blend together, beautifully,

This is something I do every year for GSAFE and hope every year that the world has become more understanding, compassionate, and supportive. I hope this quilt brings comfort and joy to whomever is the recipient.

This is a 100% cotton patchwork quilt. Fabric is by Moda & Collection is called Flying Colors. It includes a variety of rainbows, doves in flight, raindrops, flowers, & geometrics. It was quilted by a longarm professional in a swirly design with hearts. Machine wash and dry.

Brightly colored table runner. Each square with a different design. Intricate quilting pattern. All of the fabrics work so well, together, they seem to be from the same line of fabrics. Sure to brighten your dining table.

This quilt was made with the Sidewalk Chalk Quilt pattern by Then Came June. I chose to juxtapose the playful pattern with a soft color palette of soft blues, peaches, and neutrals. Adding to the playful pattern, I bound one corner with scraps from the quilt top. The backing is a super soft cotton - it'll be cozy quilt to snuggle under.
