The fears of Sam Gant, sharks, UFO abductions, and also his loves were on the canvases he created at NIAD. Sam worked in paint and printmaking but was also an avid ceramicist.

Chris Ballantyne is a landscape painter, although not in the traditional sense-it's emptiness that he captures in his flat renderings of urban and country scenes. Generally working on a small scale, Ballantye's images spill off the edge but nevertheless feel expansive and infinite. Void of human presence, the artist often depicts his landscapes from high vantages, ultimately abstracting his subjects: housing developments seemingly become elements of textile patterns, while urban sprawl may be snapped into ordered clarity. Ballantyne's use of subtle, reserved color schemes is masterful, lending the images extra veracity despite their comic nature. Ballantyne's work has been shown across the United States and abroad since the mid-1990s, including in exhibitions at the San Francisco Art Institute, the Hunterdon Museum in Clinton, New Jersey, and the Cheeckwood Museum of Art in Nashville.

Lukaza Branfman-Verissimo (she/her/they/them)is an artist, activist, educator, storyteller & curator who lives/works between Ohlone Land [Oakland, CA] and Powhatan Land [Richmond,VA]. Their work has been included in exhibitions and performances at Konsthall C [Stockholm, Sweden], Deli Gallery [Long Island City, NY], EFA Project Space [New York City, NY], Leslie Lohman Museum for Gay & Lesbian Art [New York City, NY], STNDRD [Steuben, WI], San Francisco State University Gallery, Signal Center for Contemporary Art [Malmo, Sweden], Yerba Buena Center for the Arts [San Francisco, CA] and Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive [Berkeley, CA], amongst others. For the past 5 years, Lukaza has been the Lead Curator at Nook Gallery, collaborating with over 80+ artists, writers, performers & musicians, in a gallery located in their apartment kitchen. They are currently getting their MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA.

Maria A. Guzmán Capron (b. 1981) was born in Italy to Colombian and Peruvian parents. She received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 2015 and her BFA from the University of Houston in 2004. Solo exhibitions include Shulamit Nazarian, Texas State Galleries, Premier Junior, Roll Up Project, and Guerrero Gallery. Select group exhibitions include Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art, NIAD Art Center, Shulamit Nazarian, pt.2 Gallery, CULT Aimee Friberg Exhibitions, Deli Gallery, and Mana Contemporary. Her works have been written about in Hyperallergic, Variable West, Bomb Magazine, and Art in America, and she is represented exclusively by Shulamit Nazarian Gallery in Los Angeles.

Based in Oakland, CA, Sahar Khoury works mostly with found or rejected materials to produce sculptures and installations in paper/textile mache, concrete, ceramic, steel, and silk-screen. Recently Khoury's work has been presented at SFMOMA as a recipient of the SECA Award, and at OMCA, Wattis Institute, BAM/PFA, Rebecca Camacho Presents, and CANADA (NY). Sahar Khoury is represented exclusively by Rebecca Camacho Presents.

Untitled (S0988) by Sylvia Fragoso. Glazed ceramic, 2017. 13 x 11 x 8". Sylvia started making art in her early twenties after joining NIAD. Over the last thirty years she has produced hundreds of clay sculptures: spiritually-inspired monuments that possess a humble beauty and strange power; mysterious clusters with crucifixes atop them that testify to her devout Catholicism, and crumbling towers, some with spiky projections jutting out from their thickly glazed exteriors.

There are a few themes - ducks, a Disney character named Milo Thatch, Marin and its landmarks, actor Linda Fiorentino and the work of Keith Haring - Danny Thach returns to over and over again in his work. Using a pared down graphic style that lends a very contemporary feel to his art, Thach often remakes published images and snapshots from the internet into his own.

I found out I have art from her. I didn't know until I came to NIAD. Then I started thinking about bringing up my history and putting my hidden talents together. I would say I'm an artist because I do every little thing. I can't say just one thing. Just leave it at artist because I do so many things."

Artist Jonathan Valdivias prefers moody colors but goes multipigmented for the many images he says are a self-portrait. The resulting narratives reflect his self-perception and emotional sensitivities as well as his mastery of acrylics.

In his drawing practice Jonathan likes to draw portraits of people that are important to him, frequently including NIAD staff. The recurring motif of hearts on his subject's chests reflects how special the person depicted is to Jonathan. Jonathan prefers drawing with markers, sharing that he likes bright colors.

Untitled (P2712) by Jeremy Burleson. Mixed media on stretched canvas. 24 x 24". With masking tape and paper, Jeremy Burleson has built a flood of highly detailed medical instruments: hyper-realistic and quasi-workable versions of stethoscopes, ventilators and syringes. Throughout all of Burleson's work runs the thread of strange theatricality created by early pop artists like Claes Oldenburg and Red Grooms.
