I asked my friend Kathi Swanson of Country Charm Quilts if she would like to work with me on a GSAFE quilt. When I saw the "Breaking Out" quilt pattern I thought it would be perfect for the "Wrap Yourself in a Rainbow" theme. The quilt has a simple yet stunning elongated flying geese design plus large, open areas where Kathi's quilt stitching could shine. I selected my own colors for the geese using the rainbow flag as inspiration. We are both so happy with the result.

My mom was my quilting inspiration and taught me all of the fundamentals to quilt making. The fabric used in the center of this quilt are pieces that my mom had. I decided to put them together into this quilt. She has passed away but would really be proud that I donated this to GSAFE.

For this quilt I wanted to make something that challenged me. I wanted to take a risk, admit to others when I needed support and to ultimately push through stronger and more secure in myself. When Blue Bar Quilts created bundles of bright, solid fabrics, I knew right away that they'd make a cheerful quilt for the GSAFE auction. I chose the traditional log cabin block pattern, and arranged the warms and cools to form a secondary diamond pattern which is accentuated with the quilting. The staff at Blue Bar helped me pick out the polka dot backing fabric, and I'm glad i followed their advice. This quilt is the perfect size for couch naps.

Ballard Blocks, in Tula Pink's True Colors

Brightly colored, skewed squares pop against a dramatic, black cosmic background. The backing fabric is a fun, rainbow hexagon pattern. This quilt was quilted in Florida by Stefanie and in Wisconsin by Annette. We used a quilt-as-you-go method for the top, then sandwiched the quilt back with another layer of batting. We chose our rainbow from Tula Pink's True Color line and used Tula Pink's Linework fabrics for the background and quilt backing. Recommended to wash quilt with cold water on gentle cycle with a low sudsing, mild detergent like Dreft or Woolite. You can also add a color catcher, or five, in the wash to catch the saturated colors in your quilt. Line dry. Test a small, inconspicuous part of your quilt before cleaning with any solutions.

As a teacher, I came to know students in the LGBTQ school community, who, as teenagers, struggled to find themselves and their place in the world. In helping them, it was as much a growing experience for me as for them. I learned of their many concerns, and sadly, for some, I was not a fast enough learner. For others, I was a part of their support system as they matured into adulthood and found their places in society. Now, as a grandmother, I am able to support my grandchild in his life journey.

Small improv quilted wall hanging with hand embroidery. I'm calling it an etude because in music that would be a short piece to practice a technique. For this piece I wanted to test the idea of making a rainbow quilt that didn't feel like a traditional rainbow but all the colors were represented. I was also interested in how embroidery could connect the pieces and add a 3-D element. Pocketed dowel rod for hanging on back.

Some species of trees are dioecious, meaning that the male and female reproductive parts are on separate individuals of the species. The opposite of this is monoecious, meaning each individual plant of the species has both reproductive parts. Interestingly, there are examples of dioecious trees that appear to be male (no fruit producing) that begins to start producing fruit, and thus are seen to change from male to female. in some ways this reminds me humans, some are dioecious, others monoecious, and sometimes the dioecious are not what they appear at "birth". I am a landscape designer and I made this quilt to support the LGTQA+ community that I am part of and that I have loved ones who are a part of that and live in Madison.
