The National Historic Preservation's Peter Grants for Colorado Fund has awarded the School $10,000 to restore and preserve the windows and door panels on the north and west sides as Claremont (commonly called Trianon) turns 115 years, marks 45 years on the Historic Registry, and the School celebrates its 60th Anniversary. The windows and door frames need the following restoration work: sanding, conditioning, wood repairs, painting, alignment, and attention to historical hardware and hinges. In some cases, the window sill is rotted and requires assessment and evaluation for repairs or replacement. We aim to preserve the window and door frames and panels to achieve the most aesthetically pleasing, historically accurate, and functioning frameworks.

Serving as the primary administrative hub of The Colorado Springs School and home to our Middle School, the building is a bustling center of energy at the heart of our campus. Students, teachers, and guests are in and out of the building all day long as we deliver a mission of preparing students for a dynamic world. Unforgiving hail storms, a dry climate, intense sun exposure, and daily usage have contributed to the windows' current deterioration. In several cases, the poor condition of the frames is causing secondary issues.

The grant requires a 1:1 match, meaning the CSS community must raise at least $10,000 for this effort. Costs will for this project will surpass $25,000 but will position CSS as good stewards of Claremont (commonly called Trianon) and make CSS more competitive for future grant opportunities.

The National Historic Preservation is currently reviewing two grant proposals for the School to restore the parquet de Versailles floors of
Claremont (Trianon). Our focus will be on the high-trafficked areas of the Versailles Room, Claremont Room, Terrace Room, and Library. The original 1907 Baldwin home features floor designs in a distinctive interlaced diagonal wood pattern, fashioned after the petite Trianon at Versailles. We know these floors can be restored to a beauty and elegance with proper preservation. However, the floors require expertise and restoration work which will include removing layers of liquid floor wax, sanding the floors to bare wood, replacing
missing and broken parquet wood panels, staining and finishing with a commercial-gradeproduct. We aim to embark upon this restoration process to preserve the 114-year old original floors and achieve a level of durability that will last another century.

Spark the imagination and learning potential of students through classroom enhancements. Annually, The Colorado Springs School drives 110,415 miles in CSS vans, buses, and rentals. In fact, 27,500 miles were clocked for experiential trips and competitions. An additional 84,664 miles were driven on our daily bus routes, bringing students together from 32 zip codes across the region. Recently, we invested $55,000 in our transportation fleet with two new-to-us activity buses. In preparing students for a dynamic world, our masterful teachers have always believed in providing students with real-world experiences, making connections beyond the classroom, traveling to new locations, and pursuing memorable adventures for curious young minds. Our transportation fleet is always in need of some get up and go. With an aging fleet we need to retire and upgrade vehicles to sustain our transportation needs.

Soft soled shoes allow our youngest thespians to step onto a huge stage for Dessert Theatre with confidence and charisma. Dessert theatre presents six outstanding performances by Kindergarten - 5th graders each year.

Over the years, the Middle School presents the a fall followed by the Upper School's winter performance. Then in the spring, the Upper School presents a second theatrical performance. Magical transformations of ordinary clothes into costumes. From fur for ears, hats and clever props, to period fashion pieces, and wigs, the theatre is always stretching the budget to bring a character to life on stage through costuming. With costmes a student becomes bold or adventurous, a villain, or a hero.

Creating works of glass is a unique experience in the Upper School art studio. Special safety glasses with didymium glass lenses block the intense sodium flare that comes off hot glass, along with reducing infrared radiation emitted by torches. They are necessary to prevent burning of the retina. Being able to buy extra glasses and additional safety equipment would help introduce more students to glass working and also allow for more people to watch demonstrations.

Each year the Science department evaluates the tools needed to complete complex lab experiments with students. If the sciences are important to you help CSS bulk up their supplies and tools. Good referees and officials on the field and courts are critical to upholding the esteemed values of athletics. At CSS we don't charge athletic fees and we have a no-cut policy for making the team thus encouraging all students to participate. Officiating fees range depending on the sport and the number of officials per sport and per game.

All of our teachers who take students into the field are certified in Wilderness First Aid by the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Faculty prepares for the unexpected with this fun, hands-on introduction to wilderness medicine, taught over two or two and a half days. Your donation will cover this unique training cost for one faculty member. WFA is an additional certification beyond all faculty/staff having Heart Saver First Aid/CPR certification.

Many of our seminars take faculty/staff and students off the grib during backcountry and transformational learning experiences. "There are no mistakes only lessons," is a common phrase used to frame the 8th Grade coming-of-age Walkabout seminar. Students receive beads representing the tenets of these lessons as reminders of this incredible time spent in the Utah Canyonlands and on the San Juan river. Walkabout beads are made by Upper School students in a glassmaking course. Your gift helps to fund glass supplies for creating the tradition of these unique beads.

Our band program makes beautiful music and brings students together on collaborative pieces. Young alums repeatedly remark on the connection and comradery felt from playing in the band.
