The Tropical Forest babies are turning one!

Get your party hat on, the babies of the Tropical Forest are turning one year old this fall! We will be celebrating Millie the tapir, Pablo the western lowland gorilla, Ptolemy the pygmy hippo and Scout the De Brazza's monkey on October 16 with special birthday themed enrichment in the Tropical Forest at Franklin Park Zoo. Activities will begin at 9:30 am for our gorilla and De Brazza's monkey families, and at 1:00 pm for the hippos and tapirs.

You can celebrate this important milestone with us by making a gift in their honor today!

These birthdays mark important progress toward our conservation goals for these species. Zoo New England participates in the Baird's Tapir, Western Lowland Gorilla, Pygmy Hippo and De Brazza's Monkey Species Survival Plans (SSP), which are cooperative, inter-zoo programs coordinated nationally through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). SSPs help to ensure the survival of selected species in zoos and aquariums, most of which are threatened or endangered, and enhance conservation of these species in the wild.

As Millie, Pablo, Ptolemy, Scout, and all of our Zoos babies continue to grow, they become ambassadors of conservation and compassion for visitors. Through face-to-face connections they can inspire a lifetime of commitment to the natural world in all visitors who pass through our gates.

We are so grateful for your support of their journey!

Donate Now

Donate now in honor of our Zoo babies' first birthdays!

At Zoo New England, care is at the heart of everything we do. In response to the global pandemic and our extended closure, we established the All for Our Animals Fund to provide critical daily care for the animals you know and love. You can help our animals by making a gift today! No donation is too small, and all funds will directly support animal care, including healthy diets and high quality veterinary services, for the over 1,500 animals that call your Zoos home.
