Marquis, Age 18
Marquis is served by Devereux and participates in the Art Program. Students studied the painter Wassily Kandinsky, while gaining inspiration from the connection of music and art. As they painted, students listened to a playlist of music chosen by their peers. They made marks in acrylic paint on their canvas to represent sound and rhythm. Marquis finds great comfort and satisfaction in creative expression. Art has helped him process his feelings. He is grateful that staff are always there to listen, particularly on a rough day.

Myrical, Age 15
Myrical is served by Devereux and participates in the Art Program. She used watercolor to paint this colorful butterfly. She studied the chemical reaction of water with salt, and she used that knowledge to create the crystallized background. Myrical has been working with her therapist and her teachers to discover her strengths, while she is developing coping skills to help her with her challenges. Each day is a new beginning, and she is learning to move forward with hope and a positive attitude. Myrical also understands the importance of reaching out for help when she needs it.
Julio, Age 15
Julio is served by Devereux and participates in the Art Program. Julio painted this landscape from observation using watercolor paints as he was sitting outside the Ackerman Academy High School building. We talked about how painters in the impressionist era would paint al-fresco, "in the fresh air," and capture the spirit of nature around them. Increasing observational skills benefits Devereux youth in so many ways, both in school and in life. Julio has dealt with the challenges of homelessness in his family, but through his treatment he has gained a more positive attitude which has prepared him for a successful life in the community.

Andres, Age 15
Andres is served by Devereux and participates in the art program. Andres was having an emotional day and he wanted to paint a "sad dog that uses a wheelchair." He added layers of watercolor paints for the background effect. Devereux teachers and staff recognize that not every day is going to be a good day for the youth we serve. Art class offers a therapeutic outlet for Andres, helping him express his feelings. Learning empathy for others represents major progress for Andres as he prepares to return to the community.
