The story has it that the XSB2C1 was conceived in a cattle barn on the Ohio State University fairgrounds. Though it underwent some 880 major design changes before production, most air crewmen still called it, "The Beast". It was generally considered that SB2C stood for "Son of a Bitch 2nd Class". Actually, the Helldiver accounted for the loss of more enemy shipping than any other American dive bomber; though on one mission, 70 percent of the 43 SBC2, lost was due to fuel exhaustion or other non-combat causes. The skill and gallantry of the crews, in winning the Pacific War, more than made up for the questionable mechanical features!
