The huge "Spruce Goose," still the largest plane ever to fly, was Howard Hughes' baby from the beginning. In its own inimitable style, he imagined and engineered every phase of it's creation, from the Duramold process of laminating plywood, to his appearance before a Congressional committee to protect the reputation of his company and himself. He and Hercules surprised themselves and the world that day in 1947 when they cleared the bay and were airborne at last.
