Camp One Step is proud to share a long and meaningful partnership with The Schwebel Family and The Jeffrey Schwebel Foundation, which has enthusiastically supported our mission to send children to camp for more than 19 years. The Jeffrey Schwebel Foundation was created in 2001 by Scott Schwebel and Monica Schwebel Orr, with the support of their family, to honor the memory of their brother Jeffrey, a childhood cancer survivor and former Camp One Step camper and counselor. Jeffrey first attended camp in 1979 at the age of twelve, where he was able to continue to pursue his love of sailing thanks to the camp's programs.
Since it's inception, The Jeffrey Schwebel Foundation has generously donated more than a half million dollars to Camp One Step. Today, Scott and his wife Ali are currently managing the Foundation. Jeffrey's father, Richard Schwebel, served as a distinguished Board Member for our organization. Following Dick's death in 2014, our organization created the Richard Schwebel Family Award to honor his life and this family's long-standing philanthropic association with Camp One Step.
The 2021 recipient of The Richard Schwebel Family Award is Lester and Edward Anixter Family Foundation
The Lester and Edward Anixter Family Foundation, established in 1985, supports numerous charitable interests in the Chicagoland area including the arts, children/youth services, education and human services. Steven Anixter (President) and his sister Joann Anixter Silva (Vice President) have been long time advocates of Camp One Step and have visited camp programs on multiple occasions. More recently, the younger generation of the Anixter Family have expressed interest in learning more about our virtual and in-person programs, thus continuing their legacy of support and advocacy for our mission. In total, the Foundation has awarded $300,000 to Camp One Step since 2006. In addition, the Foundation helped support the construction of the Soderquist Lodge located at Conference Point Center, with a bedroom named in honor of the Lester and Edward Anixter Family Foundation in 2018.
"To visit camp and see the joy and excitement from staff, counselors and especially the campers has always given us a strong emotional feeling in seeing how our foundation can help kids enjoy their lives. The Foundation is honored to be the recipient of the 2021 Richard Schwebel Family Award."
Hospira Foundation Award
The Hospira Foundation was the philanthropic affiliate of Hospira, Inc., which was acquired by Pfizer Inc. in September 2015. As an Illinois corporation, Hospira was looking to partner with charities based in Chicago and whose missions are centered around pediatric cancer. In 2015, our organization was awarded a grant from the Hospira Foundation to help sponsor Chicago area children to attend our Summer Camp and Winter Camp programs through 2025. At that time, we established the Hospira Foundation Award, which recognizes businesses or individuals who have provided outstanding support to our organization.
The 2021 recipient of the Hospira Foundation Award is Tip of the Hats.
Tip of the Hats is an annual fundraising event streamed online and supported by a group of friends originating from the Team Fortress 2 gaming community. Founded in 2013, it has since raised over $1.3 million for Camp One Step.
"Tip of the Hats chooses to support Camp One Step because we believe the unique environment they provide is very important in the often neglected mental healing process. Their programs provide kids with a much needed reprieve from the challenges they face. Additionally, we believe supporting these kids and families currently faced with a cancer diagnosis is just as important as funding research efforts.
Working with Camp One Step through the years has been an extremely pleasant and unforgettable experience, and the entire Tip of the Hats team greatly appreciates all of the support they provide to make our shows such a success."
