Ascension, 2017
Latex, acrylic, graphite, crayon
42 x 44 inches
Courtesy of the artist.
Stumberg is a muralist, painter and arts advocate. Her work honors the human experience through abstracted portraiture and symbolism. Her paintings are imbued with patterns that translate into the hieroglyphics of one's journey; they are feminine, painterly and expressive of connective energy. Stumberg started the arts incubator Think Greatly as a platform to facilitate neighborhood projects and to curate female-driven collaborations. Stumberg's work has been awarded numerous grants; public commissions of her work are currently located in Suwanee, Norcross, Peoplestown and Hapeville; other projects in the public realm can also be found in the metro area. Stumberg is one of two local artists to receive a 2017 Emerging Artist Award from the City of Atlanta Office of Cultural Affairs. She is a Hambidge Fellow, and represented by dk Gallery.

Acrylic on canvas

Lisa Whittington is a native of New York City where she learned to take a provocative approach to art and is dedicated to creatively documenting the history and stories of African American people. She delivered a TED talk entitled "What Does Art Want With You?" in which she encourages artists to explore a deeper purpose for creating. Her art won best in show at Atlanta Airport in 2020 and she was recognized by Saatchi Art gallery in 2021 as one of the 100 new powerful artistic voices across the nation. Her art has been featured in Architectural Digest's 'Iconic Home' project and was recognized as an artist with a voice. Recently an anonymous donor rented advertising space in NYC and honored Lisa with a hand painted mural that recreated her autobiographical work entitled "A Harlem Story." More recently, executive producers Kevin Durant and Reggie Rock Bythwood enlisted Lisa to express the experiences of young African American athletes for their motion title sequence for the upcoming TV show "Swagger." Swagger is set to premiere internationally on October 29 on Apple TV+. During her residency at Hambidge, Lisa had time to work on the artwork for Swagger with no distractions. While at Hambidge, Lisa also developed oil paintings that document the people of Greenwood and the massacre at Black Wall Street. She is also a member of the Black Artists and Designers Guild. Lisa's favorite artist and influence is Vincent Van Gogh.

Lonnie Holley
$7500Lonnie Holley
The Spirits Rising, 2020
Courtesy of the artist and Blum and Poe Gallery.
Lonnie Holley was born on February 10, 1950 in Birmingham, Alabama. From the age of five, Holley worked various jobs: picking up trash at a drive-in movie theatre, washing dishes, and cooking. He lived in a whiskey house, on the state fairgrounds, and in several foster homes. His early life was chaotic and Holley was never afforded the pleasure of a real childhood. Since 1979, Holley has devoted his life to the practice of improvisational creativity. His art and music, born out of struggle, hardship, but perhaps more importantly, out of furious curiosity and biological necessity, has manifested itself in drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, performance, and sound. Holley's sculptures are constructed from found materials in the oldest tradition of African American sculpture. Objects, already imbued with cultural and artistic metaphor, are combined into narrative sculptures that commemorate places, people, and events. His work is now in collections of major museums throughout the country, on permanent display in the United Nations, and been displayed in the White House Rose Garden. In January of 2014, Holley completed a one-month artist-in-residence with the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in Captiva Island, Florida, site of the acclaimed artist's studio.
