Hey everyone,! I'm Emily and on November 7, 2021, I will set out to run 26.2 miles in my first NYC Marathon. I have chosen to run as a member of, and help to raise critical funds for, the BronxWorks Marathon Team.
This past year I spent about 2 months in the hospital after sustaining 3rd degree burns on 30% of my body from a cooking accident. While in the hospital, a social worker told me that he knew I would run a marathon. I did not think much of it at the time, but when I went on my first run after I was discharged, the idea snuck back into my head. I remember on the first run back home I envisioned myself crossing the ribbon at the marathon, hearing people cheering me on as BronxWorks executive director, Eileen Torres, interviewed me after the race. Although this was a silly vision, since that moment, I knew I needed to run the NYC Marathon and prove to myself all the power I have, post-accident.
After moving to NYC in 2019, I feel so grateful to have found a job with BronxWorks. They are an organization that helps individuals and families in the Bronx improve their economic and social well-being by feeding, sheltering, teaching, and supporting members of the community.
The funds I raise for this marathon will go to BronxWorks Children and Youth Programs. As a Nutrition Educator on BronxWorks' SNAP-Ed Team, I see how practices like our farm stands hiring youth employees and our Community Health Program team recruiting students to implement healthy retail marketing at bodegas have had a positive impact on the community.
Now, more than ever, the individuals of the Bronx need your help: The Bronx is New York's lowest-income borough, and has been hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.
BronxWorks, deemed an essential service during New York's PAUSE in 2020, continues to serve our community during this time of critical need. Budget cuts and reduced philanthropy resulting from the pandemic, however, jeopardize the strength of all nonprofits in New York City, including BronxWorks. All funds I raise will go to BronxWorks, helping to ensure that it can continue to serve and protect the communities in the Bronx this year and beyond.
Please help me to reach my goal of raising $2,500 for BronxWorks and complete my first marathon since my accident, proving my social worker right!
