The Blue Door Cabin owns the land surrounding the pond - all trails on the west, east and north side of the pond are for you to enjoy. However, the trail next to the entrance gate will quickly lead you off property. The garage near the gate is rented and not available for Blue Door Cabin guests.

Howard's character and helped launch a sword and sorcery trend in comics. Thomas is also known for his championing of Golden Age comic-book heroes - particularly the 1940s superhero team the Justice Society of America - and for lengthy writing stints on Marvel's X-Men and The Avengers, and DC Comics' All-Star Squadron, among other titles.

"Johnson's Missouri and Kansas"

From Johnson's New Illustrated (Steel Plate) Family Atlas New York: Johnson & Browning (ca 1860/61) Hand-colored lithographed county map of Missouri and Kansas circa 1861. Three decorative vignettes showing Santa Fe from the Great Missouri Trail, Spear Fishing, and Fire on the Prairie. Paper dimensions are roughly 23 ½ x 18 inches. Nicely framed with dimensions of 25 ½ x 20 inches.

Map shows Calhoun County which became Jackson in 1858; Richardson County which became Wabaunsee in 1861; Breckenridge County becoming Lyon in 1862; and Weller County that became Osage in 1859. Out west, we find Davis County which was the last to have a name change becoming Geary in 1888. In the southeast corner of Kansas are the large counties of McGee (Crawford and Cherokee Counties in 1860);
Dorn (Neosho and Labette Counties in 1861); Wilson (Wilson and Montgomery Counties in 1867); Godfrey (In 1861 becoming Seward County, then Howard County, and now mostly Elk and Chautauqua Counties); and Hunter County (with Irving County being cut out of the northern portion in 1860 and later annexed into Butler County in 1864. Most of the land once known as Hunter County is now part of Cowley County, though there are small portions which are also now parts of Sedgwick, Sumner, Butler, Elk, Chautauqua, and Greenwood Counties).

Overall condition of the map is Very Good. There are a few small and fairly light foxing spots and the centerfold shows slight darkening from the paper binding tongue on the verso of the image. Frame remains flawless.

In 2019 the museum conducted an extensive renovation of our first floor portion of the historic Santa Fe Depot. Included in the renovation was the design of large to life size murals for our new main entrance and our new Oceania Gallery.

As a nod to our neighbors, the Chanute Public Library, this image as a mural plus one of Martin with all his books, are on display in the common area of the depot lobby.

The murals are also a reminder of how prolific both Martin + Osa were as authors. Today, I Married Adventure is often the only book fans remember, but between 1909 and 1967, Martin + Osa had 20 books published, authored hundreds of articles, scientific journal entries and comic books.

This photo shows Osa in 1935 typing away in North Borneo surrounded by her "co-authors," four gibbon apes. It also shows a sampling of dust jackets from her own 10 novels, plus one of the comic strips written by Martin that she starred in, Danger Trails: The True Adventures of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Johnson.

This photo is approx. 10 x 13 inches. It will come framed in an 11 x 14 inch, clear archival, Mylar sleeve for immediate display.

Camel Saddle Art Piece

This Camel Saddle was created in Oman and stands approximately 29 inches tall and about ten inches wide. It was donated to support our museum that is filled with images of camels from almost every African safari Martin and Osa made between 1921-1934.

This item was donated by Comforts of Home, an amazing antique and home decor shop that once graced the main street in Chanute, Kansas. We hated to see the store close, and we deeply appreciate owner Martha McCoy donating more than a few items to our Osa's Ark Museum Store and this auction to support the museum!

2 Photos of the Three Boy Scouts in Africa

Three Eagle Scouts were chosen from over 600,000 boys to go on a summer safari in 1927 with Martin and Osa Johnson in the "Wild Game" country of Africa. The scouts David Martin, Douglas Oliver, and Robert "Dick" Douglas, Jr. sailed from New York on June 9 and were met in early July at the Nairobi train station by Martin and Osa Johnson. On July 11 they accompanied the Johnsons on safari to the Serengeti in Tanganykia (now Tanzania). After 5 thrilling weeks on safari, they left Nairobi for home The boys wrote the story of their trip on board ship and "The Three Boy Scouts in Africa" was published in 1928.

Cindy Dent makes amazing jewelry and she is always so generous to share them with us and other local non-profit organizations!

This set includes a necklace, bracelet and earrings, all designed around a beautiful pendant and stunning beads on a kumihimo braid.

Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese artform of making braids and cords. Literally meaning "gathered threads", kumihimo are made by interlacing reels of yarn, commonly silk, with the use traditional, specialized looms - either a marudai (lit., "round stand") or a takadai (also known as a k'dai).

The museum hosted highly successful Kumihimo workshops during a Textile Exhibition and since then, class participants and museum supporters like Cindy have really embraced this art and shared their works to raise fund for us in auctions like this!

Rhino Chasing Planes Poster

In 2019 the museum conducted an extensive renovation of our first floor portion and public areas of the historic Santa Fe Depot. Included in the renovation was the design of large to life size murals for our new main entrance and our new Oceania Gallery.

This image was slected to be the wayfaring sign for our visitors accessing the museum's second floor galleries via the external stairs or elevator. It is one that Martin and Osa Johnson selected as a postcard to send to their friend and fellow Vaudevillian/Broadway actor Chic Sale. The original postcard is in our collection and Martin's caption on the back was "We're Coming Home!!"

This poster image is approx. 12" x 20" and will come printed on a 16" x 24" high quality matt poster sheet to be cut or framed to the buyers preference.

Karol and her late husband Dr. Richard Good were in the group of dedicated Chanute citizens that banded together in the late 1950's to help Osa Johnson's mother Belle Leighty and Martin's sister Freda create this museum.

Over the years, Karol's paintings, sculptures, paper works, textiles and drawings have helped raise much needed funds for our museum, especially at our Artisan driven annual Safari High Tea that Karol's daughter Diane works so hard on each year!

Two Handcrafted,

Native American Inspired Necklaces

1) This modern take on traditional Native American turquoise & beaded necklace was crafted by Darren Shaw & donated to the museum when we hosted a Safari Soukaba Artisan Market in the Spring of 2021. The Soukaba was one of the earliest fundraisers when the museum opened, & we held the first one since the 1970s in honor of the museum's 60th Birthday. Darren set up a sales booth for his business, Navajo Art by Darren during the Soukaba, & had specially designed this necklace for us to use in a future fundraiser to support our cultural collections.

2) The Kumihimo Hairpipe Bone Choker was created & donated by Glenn "Brian" Dent

Glenn Dent crafts stunning Lakota inspired jewelry and he has selected some amazing pieces to share with us to support the museum.

This choker features a slip clasp for a perfect fit with extended kumihimo braids.

Kumihimo is a traditional Japanese art form of making braids and cords. Literally meaning "gathered threads", kumihimo are made by interlacing reels of yarn, commonly silk, with the use traditional, specialized looms - either a marudai (lit., "round stand") or a takadai (also known as a kdai).

The museum hosted highly successful Kumihimo workshops during a Textile Exhibition and since then museum supporters like Glenn have really embraced this art form and shared many of their works to support us.

We were very saddened to lose author Clive Cussler in 2020. Clive was a devoted Martin + Osa Johnson fan & has served as a dedicated Safari Museum Honorary Trustee for more years than anyone here today can recall! Certainly more than 25 years.

Clive was also very generous in signing books and literary pieces to support the museum at charity auctions like this. To keep the tradition of having a personalized item related to Clive's amazing adventurous spirit at this years gala, Lloyd Zimmer Books and Maps of Chanute sourced and donated three of Clive's signed, classic books.

This 11" x 14" photo was created from an original image of Osa Johnson's Sikorsky Amphibian from our museum's collections. Here "Spirit of Africa" is shown parked in Chanute after purchase, and before the African Flying Safari. This photo is 11 x 14 inches and comes in a thick display Mylar sleeve frame for immediate display.

HISTORY:

The Chanute airfield was renamed "The Martin Johnson Airport" in 1935 after Martin conducted some flood relief in Chanute using Osa's plane to get supplies to regional areas cut off by high waters. Vern Carstens, the FOB at the airport who also piloted for the Johnson's on their African Flying Safari, was a driving force in the naming of the airport and later when the museum was opened in 1961.

This image was one of the first postcards created in the 1960s to raise money in support of the new museum.

This Gingerbread Wooden Antique Mantle Clock measures 14" wide at the base and 21" tall. Manufactured at the W.M.L. Gilbert Clock Company in Winstead, Connecticut, it was donated by Martha McCoy. Value is $150.

Ivana Buttry is a Czech landartist specialized for landscape-architecture and designing gardens. She designed several successful projects and exhibited original photos of her premiere LandArt experience, LANDSCAPE THAT NEVER SLEEP as a fundraiser for the museum.

At the show's close, Buttry donated all 60 of the original photos to the museum to continue her support through sales in our Osa's Ark Museum Store and at auctions such as these.

This auction item is titled "Colorful Harmony" and measures 11 7/8" by 17 7/8."

Brief Background on the Artist:

During her studies in France, Buttry came across "landart" for the first time in 2004. She is inspired freely by the work of French artists such as Emmanuel Plume, Laurent Gerbouin, and Yoann Crépin. She creates installations in nature using a rather small scale, mainly because it better explains the uniqueness and singularity of each object. After every installation, the work itself is never preserved but in her photography. It is left to environmental conditions and gradually erodes from existence. The composition art of Ivana Buttry tells non-uttered stories hidden in the landscape of each of us.

Ivana cooperates with Czech broadcasting corporation and currently she is teaching Landscape architecture at Czech University of Life Sciences in Prague.

This is perhaps the most iconic photo of Osa Johnson and has appeared on either the cover or inside pages of more than a dozen books dedicated to women explorers and adventurers.

During their first safari in Africa, Osa had a chance to ride domesticated Grevy Zebras at the Hook Farm at the base of Mt. Kenya. The photo is so famous and so well documented we can even tell you that the name of the zebra was "Bromar" and it's surely the most iconic photo of him!

This photo is 11 x 14 inches and comes in a thick Mylar sleeve frame for immediate display.

This orginal art piece was created by Jim Sallenbach for a collaborative show entitled An Artistic View of Martin & Osa Johnson's World. As part of this exhibition, Sallenbach channeled the exotic locations explored by Martin and Osa Johnson and expressed them in creative pieces of paper art, sculpture and mixed media collages.

This mixed media creation features a collage of clock imagery with a silhouette photo of Martin + Osa's airplanes in flight. It will come in an 11" x 14" thick Mylar sleeve frame ready to display.

Artist Background Brief:

Jim Sallenbach, a self-taught, mixed media artist, describes his own art succinctly as "If I drew a tree, it would not look like a tree." He takes ordinary and often discarded objects and turns them into thought-provoking individual pieces of art. Jim's prolific works have been exhibited in Kansas and California.
He focuses primarily on sculptures in 2D and 3D using paper, found and re-purposed objects, as well as canvas and board.

Vanuatu Slit Drum (atinktink)

At 12 inches, this tourist carving in the style of a Vanuatu Atinktink is a true example of suitcase art.

In Vanuatu, a slit drum is a musical instrument that is traditionally played by men of high rank. Martin + Osa visited Vanuatu in 1917 & 1919 on their first two expeditions.

This item was donated by Dr. Lamont Lindstrom, one of our museum's Honorary Trustees.

Dr. Lindstrom, Kendall Professor at the University of Tulsa, has long-term research interests in Vanuatu and other Melanesian countries focused on local knowledge systems and social movements, kava, World War Two ethnohistory, contemporary chiefs and the politics of tradition, cultural policy development, sociolinguistics, urban migration and personhood, and early Pacific photography. His books include CARGO CULT: STRANGE STORIES FROM MELANESIA AND BEYOND, ISLAND ENCOUNTERS: BLACK AND WHITE MEMORIES OF THE PACIFIC WAR, CHIEFS TODAY: TRADITIONAL PACIFIC LEADERSHIP AND THE POSTCOLONIAL STATE, and ACROSS THE WORLD WITH THE JOHNSONS: VISUAL CULTURE AND EMPIRE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY.

This new tote bag was designed to mark the 100th Anniversaries of both Martin + Osa's first expeditions to North Borneo + Africa.

The image was taken aboard the SS Glentara in 1921 as the Johnsons and their new "furbaby" children Bessie the Orangutan and Kalawatt the Gibbon Ape returned from North Borneo after their pioneering success at filming wildlife. Knowing they could accomplish this unprecedented field of filmmaking, the Johnsons were determined to head for Africa to capture the endangered and quickly vanishing animals and to record the last strongholds of their habitats.

Just home long enough to launch "Jungles Calling" their feature film of the North Borneo expedition, the Johnsons plus Kalowatt & Martin's father John Johnson stepped aboard the SS Oropesa in New York to leave for Africa on July 16, 1921. Bessie was at the dock to wish them safe travels. During their absence, the Central Park Zoo was her home, but as soon as they returned in 1922, one of the first things Martin + Osa did was to go and collect her to reunite the family!

Tote is lightweight but spacious and strong enough to hold many books...good thing since Martin + Osa authored 20 books, all of which remain great reads today!

Osa Leighty was born in 1894 in Chanute, Kansas. She married Martin Johnson in 1910 and accompanied him on all of his expeditions until 1937, when Martin was killed in a commercial airline crash. In 1940 she published I Married Adventure, which became a worldwide best seller eventually published in more than 20 languages and whose first edition zebra striped covers are still highly sought after by collectors. This book and/or its cover image is frequently found in the background of photo shoots, fashion design, and weddings.

Dog House by Royster MS Tech

This dog house, designed by Royster Middle School Tech Class, will be 4' wide x 2' 1/2" deep x 2' 6" tall dropping to 2'3". It will have a hinge that opens and the entire top comes up to clean out. It will be Hardie Board Concrete siding on the outside and FRP Panel on the inside. You will be able to open the top and hose out the entire thing. It will have shingles on top.

The MS Tech class is designing these style of dog houses for a community dog shelter. This house will be complete and ready for pick up in November.
