A program of Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute, Link Up features a highly participatory curriculum that introduces students to the orchestra, symphonic repertoire, and musical concepts such as rhythm, tempo, and dynamics. Our program culminates in a live, interactive performance at Westhill High School with Stamford Symphony musicians. For many students in Stamford, this is their first concert experience and serves as a fun and engaging entry point to classical music. Stamford Symphony has partnered with Stamford Public Schools to produce Link Up since 2014. This year, we are doing the Orchestra Swings program, which explores the elements that contribute to that magical moment when the orchestra starts to swing"
An orchestra, theater or museum can be a catalyst, building a vibrant community that is attractive for everyone. The Palace Theatre will always be the Orchestra's home for the principal subscription series but the Symphony's commitment to a greater community footprint is recognized by its plans to present more live performances in venues from Greenwich to Bridgeport. Libraries are a vibrant hub to seek information, gain knowledge, exchange ideas and share experiences, they are the perfect community partner for programming that will enriching the intellectual and creative lives of the community.
Stamford Symphony musicians offer guidance and feedback through lessons, in-depth instrument bootcamps and performance master classes. Each year, we accomplish this by deepening our engagement with Stamford Public Schools and our partner music organizations. We are committed to expanding these mentorship programs to increase access and resources to young people in every under-resourced community in our area.
Historically, there have been some great pieces of music that Stamford Symphony has not been able to perform due to the fact that they required so many musicians onstage. When we return to the Palace Theatre this season, the Major Works Fund is supporting the Symphony's first-ever performance of the gargantuan Pictures at an Exhibition and Music Director Michael Stern is eager to program more of these fantastic pieces in the seasons to come!
