Scratchboard art began in England long before the development of photography. Scratchboard consists of a wood panel, covered with a heavy coat of white china clay and a thin top layer of black india ink. An image is created by using a very sharp knife to engrave through the layer of ink. A single misplaced line can destroy the entire work of art at any moment. After the drawing is completed, coloring is achieved by using a paintbrush to apply special inks or watercolors.

Dichroic is a finish developed by NASA for use in satellite mirrors. The layering of the dichroic finish must be done in a vacuum chamber where an electron beam deposits many microscopic layers of metallic oxides, such as magnesium and titanium, on the optically pure glass. The metallic coating absorbs different colors of light at different angles making the glass multi-hued.

The Fantasy Artwork of Karen Kuykendall. Casa Grande artist Karen Kuykendall's paintings, jewelry, and papier-mache have been exhibited at both the Phoenix Art Museum and the Tucson Art Museum, and are currently in a permanent exhibit at the Mesa Historical Museum. Early in her art career, Kuykendall was interested in science fiction and fantasy art, but her artwork was often dismissed as being "illustrations and not art." She became a successful artist, published author, and teacher and abandoned the fantasy art. But later in her life, she attended a sci-fi convention in Los Angeles and discovered that her sci-fi/fantasy artwork was finally being appreciated. This encouraged her to publish Cat People and Other Inhabitants of the Outer Regions, which details the fantasy "Out Regions" realm she created.
