Over the years, Wyland has developed a close affinity for the endangered Florida manatee. In "Sea Cows," he honors the gentle spirit of one of these beautiful creatures as it swims peacefully with her calf. "The manatees have become increasingly endangered due to polluted water, loss of habitat and propellers from small boats," Wyland says. "Without a total commitment from man, they are surely to follow other extinct species. People are becoming more aware of the situation, especially in Florida, but there's still a lot of work to do.

Perhaps no other animal on earth holds such complete mastery of its realm as the orca. Supremely intelligent, these supremely powerful creatures are born into a family group and remain with that group for the rest of their lives. In his bronze sculpture "Orca Crossing," Wyland captures a sudden encounter between two orcas as they pass through the waters of their northern Pacific home. The artist heightens the impact of the signature black and white markings of the orcas with his unique patina and meticulous use of detail.

During Wyland's tenure at the Detroit at the Center for Creative Studies, his early sculpture work centered around figures.
