Like an ancient Zen master, the koala seems to be a model of patience. In this Chinese brush painting on sustainable bamboo, Wyland pays his respect to the koalas of eastern Australia, where the eucalyptus trees these animals feed on are most plentiful. "Koalas are fascinating creatures," Wyland says. "They rarely leave the trees and spend most of their days tucked into nooks sleeping. And when they're not sleeping, they're eating. Fluke Up is a classic Wyland expression of his globally iconic whale tail. Here, a great whale heaves its massive body downward, with its fluke trailing. In Blue 14, Wyland focuses his brush on the image of a crashing wave on Hawaii's north shore. These plunging wave breaks with more energy than a significantly larger spilling wave. The wave can trap and compress the air under the lip, which creates the "crashing" sound associated with waves. With large waves, this crash can be felt by beachgoers on land.

Over the years, Wyland has developed a close affinity for the endangered Florida manatee. In "Sea Cows," he honors the gentle spirit of one of these beautiful creatures as it swims peacefully with her calf. "The manatees have become increasingly endangered due to polluted water, loss of habitat and propellers from small boats," Wyland says. "Without a total commitment from man, they are surely to follow other extinct species. People are becoming more aware of the situation, especially in Florida, but there's still a lot of work to do.
