Every summer for decades, SCWF has gathered with hundreds of supporters to enjoy wild game, live music, and the fun of a live auction.
Like so many other organizations, over the past year and a half we have lost a significant amount of income due to cancelled events, reduced donations, and education classes.
When you donate the $75 that you would have paid for a ticket to our Wild Summer Nights Auction, you help sustain our work and mission! Thank you and happy bidding!
*This will not instantly charge your credit card. If you would like help with an immediate charge, please email [email protected]. Otherwise you will be charged at 10pm on July 18th.*

Female Wood ducks typically build their nests in tree cavities near wetlands. When a prospective cavity is found, a hen wood duck will land in the tree and carefully inspect the site for a variety of characteristics, including size, shape and security from predators and the elements. In many areas, wood ducks have difficulty finding suitable natural nesting sites. Wood duck boxes provide a man-made alternative, where hens can nest in relative safety from predators. The deployment of large numbers of nesting boxes can be used to help increase local or regional populations of wood ducks in areas where natural cavities are limited.
This wooden box is 9" x 25", and attached to a 9" x 31" backing piece. ready for mounting to a post.

Two admission passes to Middleton Place in Charleston.
A National Historic Landmark, home to the oldest landscaped gardens in America and an enduring, vibrant, and essential part of the Charleston and American experience.
Good for one year; expires 7/22/2022.
None of us enter Middleton Place the way many once did - by boat, with egrets as escorts, flashes of sunlight through trees, from the river. But we try to picture it.
We don't wade through rice fields wrapped in August's heavy, humid blanket. We can scarcely imagine it.
There are the Middletons, who strolled through the deep blush of camellias in bloom. The enslaved, who, stripped of their African names, tended children and livestock as their own, have long since died. But all of their spirits, stories, and the lessons they hold live on - here, with and within us, kept alive through meticulous research of history, architecture, and horticulture. They are known through the commitment of scholars who study agriculture and archeology, art, artifacts and journals. The stewards of today preserve the lush gardens, working stableyards, museum houses and precious lands.
It's all done in the service of understanding the Middleton family and the enslaved people who made a way of life and an economic empire possible. It's done to reveal the stories within the stories: the enslaved artisans who built terraces one bucket of earth at a time, the founder who led the Continental Congress and his son who signed the Declaration of Independence, the hands that harvested rice and bent iron, the descendants of families who meld race and place and age and occupation. All are invited to share the stories told here.
When we stand on the same land as generations of the enslaved and the free, take in its exquisite beauty and its inherent brutality, we understand that the stories of Middleton Place are American stories. Black stories. White stories. Essential, life-changing human stories.
Keeping those stories alive inspires our imagination, understanding, and empathy - and in so doing, they lead us all, together, to the next chapter, and the next.
There are always new stories to tell.

Adluh Flour Mills began in Columbia, SC around 1900. It was initially operated and controlled by B.R. Crooner and family. In 1920 the company merged with the Columbia Grain and Provision Co., owned by J. H. Hardin. These families operated the mill until First Commercial National Bank took over the operations under foreclosure. The Allen family from Wadesboro, NC, bought the plant in June 1926 from the bank and have operated it ever since. The Allens have been operating grist mills in Wadesboro, Peachland, and Mebane, North Carolina since the early 1800's. In 1936 the family decided to move its Mebane plant to Greenwood, SC, where it began grinding and producing flour, corn meal, and feeds in 1937. Of the two South Carolina mills, only the Columbia mill is still open. It produces flour, cornmeal, mixes, breaders, and feed products today--grinding wheat and yellow corn that is almost exclusively grown in South Carolina, and white corn from Kentucky and Tennessee farmers.

12" x 18" photo of fox on stretched canvas by Dr. Prithvi Reddy.
From the National Wildlife Federation:
Red foxes have long snouts and red fur across the face, back, sides, and tail. Their throat, chin, and belly are grayish-white. Red foxes have black feet and black-tipped ears that are large and pointy. One of the most noticeable characteristics of the red fox is the fluffy white-tipped tail. Red foxes are about three feet long and two feet tall.
Red foxes are often confused with gray foxes, which share a similar habitat and range. This can make identification difficult, because some red foxes can have large patches of gray fur and gray foxes have patches of red fur. Gray foxes are somewhat smaller and have a slightly more rounded face and shorter snout. The surefire way to tell the difference is to look for the color at the tip of the tail. Gray foxes have black-tipped tails, while red fox tails are white. Although they are very similar in name and appearance, the gray fox and the red fox are only distant cousins, belonging to different genera in the family Canidae.

Since then, he spends most of his free time birding, learning about birds, and studying their various habitat needs. During the spring of 2014, he attended his first SCWF event. Enjoy a Guided Historic Columbia Garden Tour for you and 7 friends led by HC Director of Grounds Keith Mearns!
Keith Mearns has recently been named the winner of the American Horticultural Society's 2021 Emerging Horticultural Professional Award.
Mearns began his work at HC in 2015 as a horticulturist and was promoted to his current position in 2019. He's responsible for the maintenance, planting and development of the grounds at all six of Historic Columbia's properties, as well as maintaining the only publicly accessible online plant database in South Carolina.
"This is a well-deserved recognition for Keith who has worked to institute deep and lasting changes to the landscapes at Historic Columbia," said Robin Waites, executive director of Historic Columbia. "His vision for the properties goes well-beyond beautification. He uses the sites to build on and highlight the legacies of those who worked these grounds long before him."
Mearns has long held a deep connection with plants and the natural world. The Columbia native graduated with a bachelor's degree in anthropology from the University of South Carolina. During his time on campus, he was active in his field, working in UofSC's Moore Herbarium and assisting Dr. John Nelson for several field botany classes. This experience led to an opportunity at the Riverbanks Botanical Garden, where he served as horticulturist for two years.
Since his arrival at Historic Columbia, Mearns has proved himself as a richly gifted professional whose expert plant knowledge and superior interpersonal skills have led to advancements in the organization's work to become regionally recognized as a leader in horticultural stewardship and education.
His career highlights at HC already include the following:
- Completed an official "Living Collections Policy" to guide the development of each unique HC-managed site
- Began the renovation of the gardens at Robert Mills House to include Eastern United States native plants
- Oversaw the first public garden in South Carolina to launch an Online Garden Database
- Helped in the opening of the first free public seed library in Columbia in partnership with Richland Library
- Ran Historic Columba's first "Online Plant Sale," a creative initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic which netted approximately $2,000
- Through support from the Darnall W. and Susan F. Boyd Foundation, worked as the integral team member in the planning and implementation of multiple garden development projects, including a $375,000 garden expansion (completed in 2018), a $1,000,000+ site enhancement (completed Spring 2019), and a forthcoming $2,000,000+ glasshouse project on the grounds at the Hampton-Preston Mansion.
Additionally, Mearns is a board member of Slow Food Columbia and has worked with Dr. David Shields to locate and preserve "lost" southern heirloom crops and fruits. He also serves on the board of Columbia Green and appears as a regular guest on SCETV's Making It Grow.
About Historic Columbia

Over the next six decades the organization, which was founded on the premise of preservation and education, would take on the stewardship of six historic properties in Richland County. Today, the organization serves as a model for local preservation efforts and interpretation of local history. Visit HistoricColumbia.org or find us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram or YouTube

NOAA Fisheries announced effective July 15, 2020 that descending devices must be onboard and readily available for use on commercial, for-hire, and private recreational vessels while fishing for or possessing snapper-grouper species. This was passed to reduce bycatch mortality in the snapper-grouper species complex thereby enhancing stock health and potentially allowing for better future fishing opportunities.
The SeaQualizer descending device is an innovative release tool designed to help fish recover from the effects of barotrauma. Barotrauma is the result of bringing a fish up from depth to quickly while fishing. Doing this prevents the fish from releasing air from its air bladder quick enough as pressure on it is decreased as it reaches the surface. This causes the air bladder to expand beyond its normal size.
Physical effects of barotrauma can include:
- Floating at the surface
- Stomachs protruding out of the fish's mouth
- Bulging eyes
- Flared gills
- Inflated body cavities
To use the SeaQualizer pressure activated release tool - first, attach the device to a fishing rod or retrieval line. Next, you'll attach your fish and lower it back down into the water. The device will release the barotrauma stricken fish at a predetermined depth set on your SeaQualizer.
Each Saltwater model has three depth settings to choose from:
- 30-50-70 ft for the Shallow Release
- 50-100-150 ft for the Standard Release
- 100-200-300 ft for the Deep Release
By bringing the fish back down to depth, naturally occurring pressure will re-compress the enlarged swim bladder causing the fish to become neutrally buoyant allowing it to swim on their own. This also eliminates all of the other physical effects of barotrauma that were seen at the surface.
SeaQualizer© is a well known "Cadillac" version of descending device that allows easy hookup and release of the fish with a depth sensor. These devices retail for approximately $60.00.

Enjoy two bottles of Hollow Creek Distillery's "High Cotton Bourbon."
Most distilleries will tell you they make the best spirits ever to be put in a glass bottle. Great. We're pretty damn proud of our High Cotton bourbon too but would rather you judge it for yourself. Well balanced with a smooth finish. Seriously, it's definitely worth the price of admission.
High Cotton is available for purchase at Hollow Creek Distillery and is distributed throughout SC by Southern Glazer's Wine and Spirits. If you don't see it in your favorite store or bar, simply ask for it. Of course, we're always happy to get new accounts set up.
One last thought? at Hollow Creek Distillery, we strongly believe in leaving this world a better place than you found it. Native Americans believed you never own the Earth, you only borrow it from future generations. That's a pretty good way to look at it, and it is the foundation of the charitable work for High Cotton.
5% of all proceeds generated by the High Cotton brand are donated to environmental conservation and restoration. There's endless work to be done, but we should do our part to leave a better world for future generations.
