by Maurice Armand Buffet

Maurice Armand Buffet (1909-2000) originally worked as a designer in the workshop of glass artist Jacques Grüber. His links with Jacques' son, the famous painter Francis Grüber, encouraged him to take up painting. He was a pupil at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and continued to work as a glazier in Orléans, Tours and Paris until the start of World War II. While in the army, he was taken prisoner, but escaped and eventually returned to Paris to devote himself exclusively to painting.

Buffet painted a variety of subjects: ports, beaches at low tide, Provençal landscapes, and, above all, his Lost Paradises, or dreamscapes. He had a solo exhibition at Galerie Carmine in Paris in 1946, exhibited at the Salon d'Automne from 1954, and at the Salons des Artistes Indépendants, de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, des Terre Latines, Comparaisons, and des Peintres Témoins de Leur Temps. He exhibited in the United States in 1961 and 1964. His later solo exhibitions included Galerie Reflets, Brussels in 1968; Galerie Guérin, Versailles in 1971; Galerie Dimpoulos in 1977; and Maison de la Culture, Taverny in 1979.
