Four-sided faceted vase
5"x 9 ΒΌ"
by Masayuki Miyajima

Masayuki Miyajima creates functional Japanese ceramic artwork in a continued exploration of material, form, substance and function to produce pottery imbued with a combination of body, mind and spirit. His elegant handcrafted stoneware and porcelain objects are carved and inlayed with a variety of patterns, created in Miyajima's studio situated outside of Mashiko, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan, one of Dublin, Ohio's Friendship Cities.

Miyajima is a former apprentice of Shimaoka Tatsuzo, who was designated a "Living National Treasure" by the Japanese government. Miyajima's artwork is steeped in the Mingei folk art tradition -- emphasizing the value and inherent beauty of ordinary useful items that are devoid of artistic pretense; wherein the whole of the object is important, as is its functionality.
