Evensong art quilt
26"x10"
by Sue King

An avid outdoorist, textile artist Sue King developed her deep passion for camping, hiking and canoeing in early childhood. At the age of four, her parents took her to visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park, her first encounter with "America's Best Idea." It was an experience that, years later, influenced her career.

Her mother first taught her to embroider in the crisp air of the great outdoors, warmed by a campfire.

King's textile artworks celebrate our nation's cultural and natural resources with an emphasis on indigenous people and other historical figures central to the shaping of America, especially the American West. Her work bears a message of conservation and preservation.

As an artist and clinical social worker, King's figurative work focuses on both cultural and historical aspects, placing the person in the context of the flora and fauna with which they coexist.

King has served as Artist in Residence at numerous National Parks and other public lands, including Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado and Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona. She practices both figurative and landscape art.

Her current artwork, created in part by a grant from Greater Columbus Arts Council, includes unique screenprinting processes embellished with slow and contemplative hand stitching.

King's studio space is located at the rear of her home, an historic cottage in Lancaster, Ohio. Once a donut shop, the studio contains a large picture window overlooking a Japanese garden that provides the serenity and natural light conducive to King's creativity. Adjacent is a space used as a wet room for dyeing fabric and thread.
