Title: The Summer Wind
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size: 44"h x 60"w
BUY IT NOW $5,000 (click tab below)
Description: Francene Christianson is a long-time member and supporter of MCFTA. Her lush paint handling, combined with her talent for capturing the universality in everyday moments has placed her work in exhibitions and private collections across the country. In her own words: "This painting is inspired by a family photo, so it comes by its time-stamped vibe honestly. Sinatra was a favorite in my house growing up, especially for my Dad. The title refers to a favorite song, The Summer Wind; it's a reason I used it for the title. The intense yellow frames the figures and recalls lazy, hot summer days. As I got into the painting, the almost life-size figures allowed me to really describe the fabric and the way the figures were in the frame; it worked almost like a puzzle. The family on the beach is enjoying time together and having fun. This is the thing that makes the painting one of my favorites, especially now, when being together has been taken from us."

Description: Ellen Richman's popular Contemporary Abstract Painting classes provided a compelling counterpoint to MCFTA's more traditional curriculum offerings, pulling in students from other departments eager to experience her approach to creating abstract imagery. As she puts it, "I am driven by the exploration of the visual elements: color, form, and space. I develop and reinvent visual language and am inspired to explore new forms and the relationships between them. I give my attention to the opposites of the organic versus the geometric and seek to develop a minimal image. It interests me how color and form are a universally understood language that affects mood, emotion and the subconscious mind."

Title: Double Dancer
Medium: Photography
Size: 27.5"h x 55"w framed
Description: Polly Norman's artistic practice has taken her from photography to painting to digital image-making, creating primarily abstract compositions inspired by a variety of subjects. She has exhibited her work in MCFTA's "Abstract" exhibitions, among many other venues. "Double Dancer" is part of a body of work in which, in her words, she "developed a process of photographing objects or scenes through Pennsylvania glass block, using the warped bricks as a kind of lens. The way the glass bent, distorted, and broke up lines was similar to the motion of a dancer in a still photograph. Likewise, these qualities imparted a strong rhythmic, kinetic quality as well. The images had an immediacy - even a wildness - to them." Her book, "Dances Through Glass," in which she describes her processes and inspirations, won the Midwest Book Award as well as the Eric Hoffer Award for Excellence in Independent Publishing.
