Bryan Collier's piece with the full title of Where I Live We Sleep Under Quilts, is from the book Your Moon, My Moon, a grandmother's words to a faraway child, by Patricia MacLachlan. Bryan use of texturing and collage was inspired by the African-American quilt-making tradition of his grandmother, however her creative craft was never discussed. Instead, it was something Bryan "bore witness" to -- with quilts in the home, on the bed, like a "silent gift" or "seed that was planted."

Original Title: Art from "Luna and Me" : All aflutter, Butterfly called out, "Here I come!" While researching for the book, "Luna and Me: The True Story of a Girl Who Lived in a Tree to Save a Forest", Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw and her family camped for 2 weeks in the Redwood forest on the coast of Northern California. The highlight was a magical day spent visiting Luna, the ancient redwood where environmental activist Julia Butterfly Hill lived in a platform 200 ft high for over two-years to peacefully protest the logging of ancient growth redwoods. Looking up into Luna's canopy, Jenny "saw" all sorts of animals and creatures in the wavy grooves of Luna's trunk.

One of the things Jessica Love loves about printmaking as a medium is that "hand tinting" affords you several different iterations of the same idea, while still being all different. With this particular run, she was interested in a snow blanketed landscape as a mirror for the sky, with this version being that of an ecstatic dawn sky.

Original Title: Alpine Field from "Tomorrow is Waiting" This spread is from the first book that Aaron Meshon illustrated but did not write and he loved the freedom and challenge. He interpreted the book as a wish from a parent to a young child, and the dreams and wishes parents have for their children. He wanted water to represent "life" and travel. Each page has a child representing different cultures and families as well as hidden animal families. Illustrations are from his favorite places on earth including The New Zealand Alps, Japanese hot Spring Valleys, Icelandic waterfalls and picturesque villages with canals -- all which have given him energy and love. He added that perhaps he is drawn to them (no pun intended) because he seems to gravitate towards places where the earth's crust is thin and the warmth of the earth and the power spots come through. He had fun making this book as a celebration of his young son and his own wishes for Kiley's wishes and her family.

This study for Little Bird Takes A Bath was part of a series of studies done for Marisabina Russo's book, "Little Bird Takes A Bath" as she was figuring out the main protagonist and what he would look like. Here he is brownish gray. She soon realized he needed to be a lot brighter in order to stand out against the colors of the cityscape where the story takes place. A friend suggested she use a purple finch. They are actually more pinkish than purple, but that color worked well in her illustrations. So her original little bird shed his gray feathers. Still, when she looks at these studies, she remains fond of her early little birds.

This image is from Rowboat Watkin's book "Most Marshmallows," published in 2019. What most little (and big) people may not know is that most marshmallows have to go to school to learn the things they know, which is why they need school buses to get there. Who knew, right? The other thing most folks might not know is that all the pictures in the book were built out of everyday construction paper, cardboard, glue, tape, cake sprinkles, pencil, twisty ties, and other ordinary things lying around Rowboat's apartment. He used light from desk lamps and photographed this with his tiny old iPhone 5. Life is simpler and weirder than you think sometimes. You know?
