This year marks the 700th anniversary of the death of poet Dante Alighieri. Trudel received his doctorate from the University of Oxford in 2000, and after receiving the post-doctoral License in Mediaeval Studies in 2002, he served as a Junior Fellow at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies until 2006. Fr. Trudel's talk on the geography of Paradise in the Divine Comedy will accompany the earthly gastronomic delights with a contemplation of heavenly satisfaction.

Enjoy a catered dinner for eight with Fr. Gabriel O'Donnell, O.P. Father O'Donnell will discuss the life of Bl. Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus, and what is involved in a Cause for Canonization. Father O'Donnell was also the postulator for the Cause of Rose Hawthorne, founder of the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne and the Cause for Father Paul of Graymoor, founder of the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement. Currently Father O'Donnell is Professor of Spiritual Theology as the PFIC and last year celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. According to Father O'Donnell, the Canonization process is replete with fascinating stories and experiences that he is anxious to share.

Dinner will take place in the PFIC Board Room, overlooking the Catholic University of America and the Basilica, and will be scheduled on a mutually convenient date.

O'Connor will give a presentation on Gregorian chant and why it has pride of place in the Church's tradition of liturgical music. The talk will include demonstrations of chant by Fr. O'Connor and a few members of the schola.

Fr. O'Connor is an Instructor in Moral Theology at the PFIC. Prior to entering the Order, he worked as a church musician and as an editor of the St. Michael Hymnal, in which some of his compositions appear.

In addition to being an Assistant Professor of Classical Languages, Fr. Albert Trudel, O.P., does calligraphy and illumination. He is creating this lovely piece, unframed and measuring 10 1/4" (26 cm) x 11 1/8" (36 cm), just for this auction. The watercolor paper used is Aquarelle Arches hot pressed, 100% cotton paper, 140 lb/sq. meter. The ink used is oak gall ink, from a recipe used by scribes from Roman times until the end of the 19th century. The colors will be provided from goache watercolors, which dries opaque. The image of Christ in glory with the symbols of the four evangelists is taken from the Westminster Psalter, ca. 1200, now in the British Library in London, MS Royal 2 A XXII (the image being reproduced in this illumination is on fol. 14 recto). This psalter is the oldest surviving psalter used at Westminster Abbey, and is presumed to have left Westminster after the dissolution of the monasteries. Father Trudel adds, "My painting skills are nowhere near the illuminator of this manuscript, so caveat emptor (let the buyer beware)!"

The text underneath is taken from the Introit for Easter Sunday: "I have risen, and I am yet with you, Alleluia: you have placed your hand upon me, Alleluia; your knowledge has become marvellous, Alleluia, Alleluia." The text is in a late Carolingian script, which is similar to the text which appears in the psalter.

It was inspired by the Holy Father's April 18, 2008, visit to the Pope John II Cultural Center - now the John Paul II National Shrine - where the Holy Father paused in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. This occurred between his address to representatives of non-Christian religions, and his greeting to Jewish leaders as they prepared to celebrate Passover. The artist worked at the Center at the time.

In this book, Michael J. Hollerich recovers the reception of this text across time. The Unity of Body and Soul in Patristic and Byzantine Thought explores the long-standing tensions between such notions as soul and body, spirit and flesh, in the context of human immortality and bodily resurrection. Naming God in Early Judaism by Anthony Meyer brings together all ancient evidence to tell the story of the divine name, YHWH, as it travels in Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek through the Second Temple period, the most formative era of Judaism.
During the Second Temple period (516 BCE-70 CE), Jews became reticent to speak and write the divine name, YHWH, also known by its four letters in Greek as the tetragrammaton. Priestly, pious, and scribal circles limited the use of God's name, and then it disappeared. The variables are poorly understood and the evidence is scattered. This study brings together all ancient Jewish literary and epigraphic evidence in Aramaic, Hebrew, and Greek to describe how, when, and in what sources Jews either used or avoided the divine name. Instead of a diachronic contrast from use to avoidance, as is often the scholarly assumption, the evidence suggests diverse and overlapping naming practices that draw specific meaning from linguistic, geographic, and social contexts.

Flores Augustini: Augustinian Florilegia in the Middle Ages (Spicilegium Sacrum Lovaniense)

Augustine of Hippo was one of the first authors to give rise to the need for anthologies devoted to a single author. Today, over a hundred florilegia dedicated solely to Augustine's writings are known. Over the course of the Middle Ages, several of these collections proved instrumental in giving access to the Bishop of Hippo's large oeuvre, and in determining the direction of its reception. In fourteen chapters, this volume presents some important Augustinian florilegia, their sources, composition, context, afterlife, and the challenges inherent in editing and studying them. Beginning in Late Antiquity, with Vincent of Lerins and Prosper of Aquitaine, the volume discusses several medieval and early modern florilegia, both well-known and more marginal, and concludes with their use by Augustine's modern editors. As such, this book contributes to a better understanding of the reception of Augustine throughout the Middle Ages and to the ways in which his exceptional auctoritas took shape.

Sacred Heart Devotion: Memory, Body, Image, Text-Continuities and Discontinuities is an innovative, pluri-disciplinary approach that focuses on how memory in Sacred Heart devotion is created, promulgated and transformed. The volume with contributions by historians, theologians, religious scientists and art historians links the dimension of memory to that of iconography, language, body and ritual practices and sheds light on adaptations, transfers, contestations and variations in a perspective of longue duree from the late Middle Ages to the present. The first part of the volume develops central axes of analysis, which are specifically investigated in the two following parts. The contributions of part two intertwine perspectives of cultural, social and art history focusing on the multi-layered creation, public presence and political usage, diversity and variations of Sacred Heart iconography and devotion in a long-term perspective. In-depth analyses center on late medieval northern Italy, early modern France and 18th-century Switzerland (Eidgenossenschaft), on France from the 1950s to the 1980s, and on Indonesia in the 20th and 21st centuries. Non Sumus Tempora: Studies on Augustine and His Reception Offered to Mathijs Lamberigts

Mathijs Lamberigts' long and prolific research career started with the study of the controversy between Julian of Aeclanum and Augustine of Hippo on the issues of human free will and divine grace. This research interest rapidly came to include all aspects of the turbulent life, the massive oeuvre, and the complex ideas of the Doctor Gratiae, imbedded in the historical, political, socio-economic, religious, ecclesial, and intellectual context of the fourth and fifth centuries. Driven by a deep respect for the original sources, and always well informed about the established scholarship, Lamberigts deployed a rigorous historical-critical method in his publications. The first nineteen contributions of the present volume reflect this first love for Augustinian studies. As illustrated by the cover image, taken from the famous sixteenth-century Leuven edition of Augustine's collected writings, Lamberigts' historical-critical study of Augustine stands within a rich and enduring Leuven tradition. The same old print expresses the gradual expansion of Lamberigts' research interests, which came to embrace Augustine's legacy in the fifteenth-seventeenth centuries. In fact at the end of the Middle Ages, Augustine and his doctrine of sin, grace, and free will found renewed interest, even becoming part of the ideological-religious foundations of Martin Luther - who was after all an Augustinian friar - and hence of the Reformation. All parties involved in the religious controversies of this period appealed to the Doctor Gratiae to justify their own position. Lamberigts has always shown a vivid interest in these developments, and especially in how Augustinian thinking became a doctrinal pillar of Leuven theology in the Early Modern Era. Consequently, part of Lamberigt's scholarly work has focused on figures such as Michael Baius and Cornelius Jansenius of Ypres, on movements such as Jansenism, as well as on the Jansenists' theological adversaries, the Jesuits. Eight essays of this volume evoke this particular period in church history. These twenty-seven papers are offered to Mathijs Lamberigts by former students and colleagues, out of gratitude for his generous personality, for his inspiring scholarship, and for his academic leadership.

Modus Vivendi: Religious Reform and the Laity in Late Medieval Europe is a collection of essays by scholars who seek to discover lay men and women within the projects of reform and renewal in later medieval Europe. They contributed to religious life beyond the routine provisions of parish life, and often included women in novel ways. Modus Vivendi spans European regions across the period 1350-1500 in its studies, based on texts, objects, and images which have been little studied so far.

Contracts Between Ecclesiastical Entities According to Canon Law by Joseph Clifford Ndi

Within ecclesiastical circles, both from the perspective of legal practice and ordinary relational matters between ecclesiastical entities, the theme of contract very scarcely occupies a place of prominence. It is a situation that is due on the one hand, and to a large extent, to the fact that the canonization of civil law on contracts (c. 1290 CIC/1983) has had the consequence of transferring the preoccupation of the entities on this matter to the domain of civil law. Besides, and still connected to the above, is the tendency to attribute a merely pastoral relevance to their relationships, with little or no reference to the juridic aspects inherent in these relationships. It is a situation that is largely responsible for the crisis which do not uncommonly characterize some of these relationships as verified over the centuries; particularly in the relationship between dioceses and religious institutes. The issuance of various papal and conciliar exhortations before and after Vatican II, as well as the normative instructions and legal provisions contained in various juridic documents, most prominently cc. 271, 520, 681 and 790 of CIC/1983, has gone a long way to dissipate some of the tensions of the past. However, the true nature of how the contractual relationship between ecclesiastical entities, including the attendant issues of conceptual understanding, civil status of ecclesiastical entities, resolution of contractual disputes, etc., remains a matter of investigative interest for the canonist. This is, in a nutshell, the substance of this research work. The conclusions arrived at offer the reader an insight into the available untapped resources within the ecclesiastical legal system, as well as some considerable possibilities which remain to be explored to the benefit of the subjects of canon law.

The study of the Septuagint (LXX), specifically the deuterocanonical books, and early Jewish prayers have gained attention in recent years. The eleven essays in this volume offer various exegetical or theological insights into select prayers known from the deuterocanonical books. Authors discuss how prayers interact with their larger literary contexts and raise text-critical questions that compare different ancient versions of various prayers. Larger questions of theological interest, such as the role prayers played in moral formation, are also treated among the essays. A History of the Church through its Buildings takes the reader to meet people who lived through momentous religious changes in the very spaces where the story of the Church took shape. Buildings are about people, the people who conceived, designed, financed, and used them. Their stories become
embedded in the very fabric itself, and as the fabric is changed through time in response to changing use, relationships, and beliefs, the architecture becomes the standing history of passing waves of humanity.

This process takes on special significance in churches, where the arrangement of the space places members of the community in relationship with one another for the performance of the church's rites and ceremonies. Moreover, architectural forms and building materials can be used to establish
relationships with other buildings in other places and other times. Coordinated systems of signs, symbols, and images proclaim beliefs and doctrine, and in a wider sense carry extended narratives of the people and their faith.

Looking at the history of the church through its buildings allows us to establish a tangible connection to the lives of the people involved in some of the key moments and movements that shaped that history, and perhaps even a degree of intimacy with them. Standing in the same place where the
worshippers of the past preached and taught, or in a space they built as a memorial, touching the stone they placed, or marking their final resting-place, holding a keepsake they treasured or seeing a relic they venerated, probably comes as close to a shared experience with these people as it is
possible to come. Perhaps for a fleeting moment at such times their faces may come more clearly into focus.

On the Six Days of Creation (Fathers of the Church; Shorter Works) by St. Gregory of Nyssa

The first volume of our new series, Fathers of the Church: Shorter Works, will be available in the summer of 2021. This series, to be printed only in paperback format, will offer English translations of treatises, homilies, poems, and letters of the Church Fathers in slim, easily affordable volumes. In this way a multitude of important writings will become accessible to scholars and students as well as the reading public.

This is the first complete English translation of St. Gregory of Nyssa's treatise On the Six Days of Creation (In Hexaemeron). It was probably written in 380-381, and is designed as both a defense and a critique of his recently deceased brother St. Basil's better known homilies on the creation story as set out in the first chapter of Genesis. At the same time it incorporates Gregory's own observations on the Genesis text, which reflect his desire to show the consistency between Scripture and the philosophy and natural science of his day

A notable feature is Gregory's presentation of God's creation of the world as what has been called a "substantification" of God's own will, creatio ex Deo rather than creatio ex nihilo. Other ideas of his seem interestingly to foreshadow those of modern science, notably his challenge to the idea that matter is a primary ontological category and his theory that the world as we know it developed through a process of "sequence" (akolouthia) from an originally simultaneous creation of everything.

Gregory differs from Basil in maintaining that the "waters above the firmament" in Genesis 1 are spiritual rather than physical in nature. He uses a modified form of Aristotle's theory of elements, together with some interesting observations on geography and meteorology, to construct a detailed and ingenious account of the "water cycle." This description enables him to refute Basil's notion that there needs to be an extra supply of physical water above the firmament so that the water lost from earthly seas and rivers through evaporation can be "topped up."

The Pope's Dilemma: Pius XII Faces Atrocities and Genocide in the Second World War (German and European Studies) by Jacques Kornberg

Pope Pius XII presided over the Catholic Church during one of the most challenging moments in its history. Elected in early 1939, Pius XII spoke out against war and destruction, but his refusal to condemn Nazi Germany and its allies for mass atrocities and genocide remains controversial almost seventy years after the end of the Second World War.

Scholars have blamed Pius's inaction on anti-communism, antisemitism, a special emotional bond with Germany, or a preference for fascist authoritarianism. Delving deep into Catholic theology and ecclesiology, Jacques Kornberg argues instead that what drove Pius XII was the belief that his highest priority must be to preserve the authority of the Church and the access to salvation that it provided.

In The Pope's Dilemma, Kornberg uses the examples of Pius XII's immediate predecessors Benedict XV and the Armenian genocide and Pius XI and Fascist Italy, as well as case studies of Pius XII's wartime policies towards five Catholic countries (Croatia, France, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia), to demonstrate the consistency with which Pius XII and the Vatican avoided confronting the perpetrators of atrocities and strove to keep Catholics within the Church. Soldier of Christ: The Life of Pius XII by Robert Ventresca

Debates over the legacy of Pope Pius XII and his canonization are so heated they are known as the "Pius wars." Soldier of Christ moves beyond competing caricatures and considers Pius XII as Eugenio Pacelli, a flawed and gifted man. While offering insight into the pope's response to Nazism, Robert A. Ventresca argues that it was the Cold War and Pius XII's manner of engaging with the modern world that defined his pontificate.

Ambrose, Augustine, and the Pursuit of Greatness by J. Warren Smith

Since Aristotle, the concept of the magnanimous or great-souled man was employed by philosophers of antiquity to describe individuals who attained the highest degree of virtue. Greatness of soul (magnitudo animi or magnanimitas) was part of the language of Classical and Hellenistic virtue theory central to the education of Ambrose and Augustine. Yet as bishops they were conscious of fundamental differences between Christian and pagan visions of virtue. Greatness of soul could not be appropriated whole cloth. Instead, the great-souled man had to be baptized to conform with Christian understandings of righteousness, compassion, and humility. In this book, J. Warren Smith traces the development of the ideal of the great-souled man from Plato and Aristotle to latter adaptions by Cicero, Seneca, and Plutarch. He then examines how Ambrose's and Augustine's theological commitments influenced their different critiques, appropriations, and modifications of the language of magnanimity.

This book explores how the Virgin Mary's life is told in hymns, sermons, icons, art, and other media in the Byzantine Empire before AD 1204. A group of international specialists examines material and textual evidence from both Byzantine and Muslim-ruled territories that was intended for a variety of settings and audiences and seeks to explain why Byzantine artisans and writers chose to tell stories about Mary, the Mother of God, in such different ways. Sometimes the variation reflected the theological or narrative purposes of story-tellers; sometimes it expressed their personal spiritual preoccupations. Above all, the variety of aspects that this holy figure assumed in Byzantium reveals her paradoxical theological position as meeting-place and mediator between the divine and created realms. Narrative, whether 'historical', theological, or purely literary, thus played a fundamental role in the development of the Marian cult from Late Antiquity onward.

Old St Peter's Basilica in Rome stood for over eleven centuries until it was demolished to make room for today's church on the same Vatican site. Its last eyewitness, Maffeo Vegio, explained to the Roman hierarchy how revival of the papacy, whose prestige after the exile to Avignon had been diminished, was inseparable from a renewed awareness of the primacy of Peter's Church.
