Once the pride of the Gold Coast commuter boats that whisked financiers from their Long Island homes to their Wall Street offices in the 1930s, Aphrodite, one of the most easily recognized boats on the water, is now the pride of Watch Hill, having been totally restored back to her former glory.

Even in its original incarnation, Aphrodite was never just another pretty commuter boat. It was commissioned by John Hay "Jock" Whitney in 1937 from the Purdy Boat Company in Port Washington, on the north shore of Long Island. Purdy-built Aphrodite to go fast, with twin 1,500-hp Packard airplane engines. It also was arguably the prettiest commuter boat on the water, with its signature torpedo stern, long, low, black profile, and gleaming mahogany.

During the Second World War, Whitney gave the boat to the Navy, which used it to carry dignitaries (including President Roosevelt) up and down the East Coast. After the war, when Whitney was the publisher of The New York Herald Tribune, he sent Aphrodite every morning from his then summer home on Fishers Island to New London to pick up the morning papers. He also entertained on the boat, with a guest list running from Fred Astaire and Spencer Tracy to Shirley Temple. In the '60s Whitney donated Aphrodite to charity, and it eventually went through several owners and various states of disrepair.

In 2003, Chuck Royce, of Royce Mutual Funds, found Aphrodite languishing in Florida and brought it up to the Brooklin Boatyard in Maine for a total, two-year restoration. The boat now is moored in Watch Hill, near the Ocean House, which Royce also restored.

Take home this cannonball from the War of 1812 era for an entire year -- a truly priceless item!

This cannonball was recovered in Stonington and weighs about 18 pounds. It is believed to have been shot during the Battle of Stonington in 1814, but dating iron this old can be tricky; so it is possible that this cannonball is older than that! You can display this stunning conversation piece in your home or office. The cannons used to defend Stonington during the War of 1812 - and now on display in Cannon Square - are 18 pounders. They were a popular defense cannon against naval warfare since they were mostly stationary and had a long range of accuracy for the time period (up to one mile!). 18 pounds refers to the weight of the ball; but also to the size or caliber of the cannons themselves. Typically; the powder charge used to fire the shot was about 1/3 as much as the shot itself; meaning these 18-pound cannonballs were fired with 6 pounds of gunpowder.

As a memento of your stewardship of the cannonball for a year, you will also receive a copy of "The Rockets' Red Glare" by Glenn Gordinier. This cannonball must be returned to the Stonington Historical Society by May 15, 2022, with the case. The cannonball cannot be removed from the case.

The Stonington Cemetery Association seeks to maintain and preserve a historic cemetery, now listed on the National Register of Historic Places, for public use and enjoyment and to operate as a non-profit, non-sectarian cemetery. Up to 12 of you will join the esteemed Venture Smith scholar, Nancy Steenburg, and her colleague Elizabeth Kading for a hike to the Venture Smith homesite. The hike will be followed by a picnic luncheon and an intimate presentation and Q&A session with Professor Steenburg.

Venture Smith was kidnapped from his African homeland as a child and enslaved here in Stonington for the better part of his life. Under various owners, Venture Smith was both respected and abused. He was allowed to earn an income outside of his bondage and eventually was able to purchase the freedom of his family. In Stonington, Venture Smith was enslaved, purchased his freedom, bought real estate, and built a home. His narrative or memoir was published in 1797 detailing his extraordinary life.

Nancy Steenburg is a professor of history at the University of Connecticut's Avery Point Campus where she also oversees the Bachelor of General Studies Program. She has studied the life of Venture Smith for many years and was instrumental in identifying the original boundaries of Smith's parcel of land and homesite. Steenburg served as the primary researcher for the Venture Smith Project funded by the State of Connecticut. A permanent exhibit will be installed at the Old Lighthouse Museum sometime this fall.

Dave Meiklem holds an AFA from Silvermine College of Art, a BFA from Hartford Art School, and has done graduate work in sculpture at RISD. "Arriving at Whit Davis's Historic Farm with easel and watercolors in tow, I asked Mr. Davis if I could paint there. Getting out of his red truck, with his signature red suspenders, he told me that I was to paint his front door. At that point, I wasn't sure if there was a misunderstanding. Was he going to hand me a bucket of paint? After an awkward moment, I realized that he knew exactly what I wanted to do. The day was bright and clear, the colors brilliant, it was such a privilege to be able to document this image where historic moments were made."

Pamela Pike Gordinier is an award-winning artist whose artwork is in the collections of several Fortune 500 companies. She has been an elected member of The CT Academy of Fine Arts, The Copley Society of Boston, Mystic Museum of Art & CT Watercolor Society.

Pam has a Masters in Education and has taught in France, Portugal, Italy, and along the New England Coast. She now splits her time working and teaching in her studio in Stonington, CT, and as a master instructor at the Vero Beach Museum of Art.

This petite rocker has been re-upholstered in period fabric with fabric buttons on the seat back. The seat cushion springs and lumbar support are quite comfortable.

The low arms on the side indicate it was possibly used as a nursing chair. There is some wear at the feet, but no visible markings to indicate manufacturer or age.

History education is incredibly important for young people, as it fosters critical thinking skills, cultivates a connection t0 our collective community, and helps students develop empathy. Funds will allow us to expand our existing school programs at Stonington High School and other schools, create lesson plans, and expand our outreach in the education system.

A $250 gift will help the Historical Society make our knowledge and collection accessible to everyone, everywhere online. The COVID-19 pandemic has made every institution rethink how we share our stories, including us. With these funds, we can digitize archival materials, create new online exhibitions, and write new blog posts about the stories we preserve.
