Description: During the pandemic, the Auntie Sewing Squad has been a Shadow FEMA from behind their sewing machines. They have sewn and distributed over 300,000 homemade facemasks to vulnerable communities, as well as coordinating several relief vehicles filled with supplies to the Navajo Nation and Standing Rock. This denim square was one of the many fabric donations the Auntie Sewing Squad received during the pandemic. Because fabric stores were closed at the top of the pandemic, people were plundering their fabric stashes for us to repurpose them into masks. This denim was too thick to sew into a mask, but was the right size for what looks like a giant punk anarchist patch with this logo that was repurposed from the "Anti Social Social Club" logo by Auntie Badly Licked Bear. Auntie Sewing Squad is a scrappy effort that was supposed to be a 3 week stopgap at the top of the pandemic. Auntie Sewing Squad are still sewing masks now. This wall hanging represents their spirit of resourcefulness, humor, and resilience.

100% of the proceeds of this sale will go to the Auntie Sewing Squad's "Auntie Care" fund which helps caregiving work within the group so that the Aunties feel cared and connected to each other as they do this sewing work. "Auntie Care" has kept the group so close during the pandemic and helped the Aunties feel connected to their purpose.

Artwork Pickup Information:

Curbside pickup at the Armory will be available following the close of the auction and we will reach out to you to coordinate. If you are unable to pick-up your artwork, we will work with you to deliver your item in person wherever possible. Please be patient as pick-up arrangements are dependent upon COVID-19 restrictions. If you live outside of the greater Los Angeles area we will arrange shipping of your work via a third party carrier, buyers are responsible for any additional shipping expenses.
