Description: "A few years ago, I spent some time in Iceland and became fascinated by Thingvellir National Park, the area where the North American and the Eurasian plates meet. I began to imagine them once being connected and breaking apart. I started wondering what would happen if you tried to push them back together; would they match up? The idea of things once being one piece, breaking into two, and then changing made me think of a broken relationship, or of how we grow apart from friends or family as we move far away and get older. We may have fit together in the past, our edges matching, but now what remains is two pieces that have been smoothed over and further cracked by time and weathering and change.

All my work centers around kinship, intimacy, and familial ties. My drawings and sculptures often involves natural forms I am drawn to both in the body, and in nature. I am constantly investigating how we interact with one another, how we support each other, and how we grow apart or grow together. I have made many pieces that show two entities interacting, seeing their full forms, as well as their interaction. With this piece, I decided to zoom in on the interaction of these two entities. This work focuses in on the moments of connection and disconnect between the forms, rather than on the forms as a whole. "

Description: From 2013-2015 Austyn did a series of paintings documenting gay bars, celebrating them as spaces that have allowed for community building and radical political action. Using the traditional technique of limestone lithography, the print evokes aesthetics of Kemetic culture. Description: "Like all wildlife in the world today, bird populations are under threat. I began this series as a way to study the variety of birds in my own environment. Over time I began to see them as individuals, and the paintings as portraits. When I show my drawings, sometimes people confess to never having considered birds important. Of course they are. These small paintings yell out, 'Pay attention to the birds!'"

I am curious about strategies for capturing movement before and after the invention of film. Artist Statement: "Over the past few years, I've worked with a variety of art mediums (film, drawing, painting, sculpture, weaving) that have each presented its own unique challenges. A through line in my work, however, is an interest in constructing a world, and conveying narrative through movement and compelling visuals. The ideas I contend with in my work are sometimes darker and more serious, but I have always approached it with a sense of playfulness and whimsicality. This approach represents perhaps one way in which we might come to terms with life's absurdities and contradictions."

Description: "This photograph is representative of my ongoing documentation of the urban landscape that has been the backdrop to much of my life. Where some might see blight or urban decay, I have often found things worthy of capture and preservation, things full of history, complexity, and beauty. I have found a subversive kind of pleasure, taking the more hostile elements of our city, barbed wire for example and transforming them into something that feels different, softer, and less menacing."

Artist bio: Julieta was born in Mexico City and raised in LA. She is an educator and fine artist. Her artistic practices include ceramics, graphic design, photography, and screen-printing. She has exhibited work in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin, Tijuana, and Mexico City and has collaborated on several mural projects throughout L.A. She has contributed to local zines, designed album graphics for local artists, and recently worked as a still photographer for a documentary on Cuban combat photographer, Perfecto Romero. Some of her earlier work, including this photo, was published in Graffiti Woman by Nicholas Ganz.
