Michael Swoboda has spent his career in education, commercial digital imaging, and graphic design. He has taught classes, delivered lectures, and created workshops at five colleges and universities and across the Midwest. Some of his clients include the University of Notre Dame and the Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies for which he has designed books, catalogs, brochures, and on-line media. In 2010, he was recognized and awarded by the American Association of Museums for two exhibition catalogs he designed, in 2016 was honored with the Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award, and in 2020 was honored with the STLCC Faculty Lecture Award.
Throughout U.S. history, presidents have participated in photography as subjects, producers, and consumers of photographs. We will explore how presidents have participated in key moments in the history of photography, from the first presidential images produced in the 19th century to the digital revolution of the 21st. As a photographer, Ken Konchel is drawn to the expressive power of buildings. He's interested in provocatively capturing architecture in an abstract, graphic way, with an intention to make compelling photographs that remove the context and distill architecture to nothing but relationships of shape, line, form, pattern, detail, tone, and/or texture.
In this lecture Ken will share highlights of his architectural photography and discuss his process of creating unique, abstract compositions that do not immediately reveal themselves as architecture.

From Montgomery to Memphis with John Kerans
During the 1950s and 1960s, before network television news hit its prime, the struggle for Black equality was largely captured in black-and-white images by photographers employed by newspapers, magazines and wire services. Among the best were Bruce Davidson, Gordon Parks, Charles Moore, Ernest Withers and Lee Friedlander. In this lecture, we'll meet these five photographers, review their iconic images and study the factors that made their photos timeless.

Photoshop II: Advanced Photoshop with Michael Swoboda
Michael will demonstrate various intermediate and advanced creative and professional methodologies for editing images in Photoshop in the service of commercial and artistic solutions. Step-by-step lessons will be presented and a question and answer session will occur at the end of the talk where participants can share their images to gain insights and potential solutions for expressive image improvements.
This course explains how to create compelling "on location" portraits - at home, at work, at play - without the need for a studio or expensive equipment. Learn why a "long lens" makes faces look great, and find out how to adapt your existing lenses for portrait shoots. Discover how to separate your subjects from the background by using a shallow focus to replicate the look of a Hollywood motion picture. Identify the best angles from which to shoot in order to make your subjects - young or old - look their best. Take advantage of available light and practice how to supplement what's available by using an external flash, a cheap reflector, or both.

Alan will share how he "sees" in black-and-white, explore what makes a successful black-and-white image, and show you his favorite tips and techniques for converting your images to black-and-white and creating a tonally rich final image.
Using selected images from participants, Alan will talk you through the tools and techniques he uses to transform an image, translating the literal to something more personal and expressive. Think of it as an image "makeover." You'll learn how to post-process quickly and effectively by watching how he transforms a selection of participant images.

In 2016, Route 66 celebrated its 90th anniversary. Among all the cities that it ran through from Illinois to California, St. Louis was the largest. The Route 66 alignment through St Louis extended over 18 miles.
Susan followed this route through St. Louis with one of her toy cameras, a Holga Digital, to see what it looks like now. She'll be showing you what she found.

As a photojournalist Neeta Satam has traveled worldwide on assignment. Through her documentary work people have let her into their lives, allowing her intimate access to photograph them. She often lives with the people she photographs, developing a rapport that leads to lifelong friendships and numerous poignant and learning moments. These moments profoundly changed how she looked at the world around her.
'You often hear that you have to put your camera away and live the moment. When I reflect on the stories I covered, I feel, I have had the opportunity to live and capture the moment.'
Neeta Satam is a photojournalist, scientist, educator, and a National Geographic Explorer based in Saint Louis and Mumbai. Her work explores the themes of cultural assimilation, the human condition, and the environment through documentary photography. Her photography has been published in The New York Times, The Guardian, Le Monde, NPR, Bloomberg News, ESPN, The Washington Post, and other publications. She is a Pulitzer Center and the International Women's Media Foundation Grantee.

Where the photojournalist works to capture decisive moments, the documentary photographer strives to put those moments in context. Armed with a camera and a critical eye, he or she arranges images in a sequence to tell a compelling story, one with a beginning, middle and end. At their best, these images convey what Dorothea Lange once described as "a sense of time and place." So too, these images should exert an "emotional tug" that pulls the viewer into the narrative and creates common ground with the subjects depicted in the images.
In this lecture, attendees with become acquainted with four great 20th century storytellers: Gordon Parks, Walker Evans, Dorothea Lange, David Douglas Duncan. The work of these four photographers will be analyzed and then discussed. Attendees will also learn the basics of visual storytelling techniques which can be adapted to their personal projects.

Description: The tradition of documentary photography is very much part of contemporary American Photography. Stan Strembicki has worked as a documentary photographer on and off his entire career. In this presentation he will concentrate on two major long term projects, photographing Mardi Gras in New Orleans over three decades and a 15 year documentary project that addresses the rebuilding of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.
Stan Strembicki is an emeritus professor at Washington University where he headed the photography program for 36 years. His work can be found in many museums and collections throughout the USA and can be found on public display on all seven continents, yes, even Antarctica

This three part digital workshop will cover the full process of capturing dramatic black and white landscape photographs, from previsualization, through processing in Adobe Lightroom and producing the master print file. While Jack will be using Adobe Lightroom for his demonstration, many of the same principles are applicable in the field and your personal choice of post-production tools.
Jack will use live before and after transformation dissolves and a several on-screen pre-post production illustrations to effectively demonstrate each Element of Presence used during his infield visualization process. Additionally Jack will discuss how he connects his post-processing to his visualization process and field work. He will also run share a short on-location video from Patagonia's Torre del Paine National Park and then a live demonstration in Adobe Lightroom of how he brought the visualized image to life from RAW file to a pre-print final file.
Jack will share his visualization process pre-shoot and then pick a few images to Post Process taken during Fog, Rain, Snow, overcast cloudy days, predawn, and twilight and do a live demonstration on how he expanded the range of light.

Justin Barr studied graphic design at UM-St. Louis and now specializes in photography and videography. He started with family portraits and soon moved into wedding photography. In 2017, Justin added an aerial photography drone to his equipment kit to bring a new dimension to the usual wedding photographs. After an uncharacteristically slow wedding season, Justin hit the streets of St. Louis, drone in hand, to capture some of the landmarks around town. Focusing mainly on lesser known sites, Justin has gained a loyal following on social media due largely to the fact that people are now able to see some of their favorite spots from above, giving these locations a unique perspective, and renewing their love for the city.

Throughout its 55-year history the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum has honored those who have made great contributions to the field of photography and has sought to preserve historic photographs and cameras through its collections. David R. Hanlon, noted photographer and historian, will shares his insights into many of these Masterworks from IPHF's latest exhibition.
David R. Hanlon's photography concentrates on the characteristics and issues of landscape, architecture and portraiture. From 1990 - 2001 Hanlon was the chief photographer of the archaeological excavation at Tell Tuneinir in Syria. His photographs are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the University of Kentucky Museum of Art, and numerous private collections. David has taught at St. Louis Community College at Meramec since 1990.

The series Vanishing in Plain Sight represents Olivia Parker's journey into Alzheimer's Disease as experienced through her late husband, John Parker, who passed away in December of 2016.
A continuing work in progress, Vanishing in Plain Sight proves to be some of the most emotionally evocative and experimental work of Parker's long career. Poignant and deeply moving, this series finds the artist exploring new grounds, including self-portraiture and dramatic grid sequences, while still retaining the vivid color and abstract liveliness that have become the signature of her still life work.
Eric McDade, DO, is an Associate Professor of Neurology at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. His research interests include the application of cerebrospinal fluid and neuroimaging measures to identify early pathology of Alzheimer's disease, the interaction of cerebrovascular function and Alzheimer pathology with the ultimate goal of identifying early markers of Alzheimer's disease progression that can be used in testing disease modifying therapies.

2018 Hall of Fame Inductee, John Loengard returns to the IPHF for a special speaking engagement, Moment by Moment: a Chat with John Loengard, discussing some of his most famous images.
In his 30-year career with LIFE magazine, Loengard's subjects have included movie stars, writers, politicians, artists and other photographers, as well as normal people engaged in a host of activities, mundane and otherwise.
Ruth Ezell has been a familiar face (and voice) in the St. Louis area for more than 2 and a half decades. TV audiences were first introduced to her on KSDK-TV (better known today as 5 On Your Side). She had a five-year stint as a Saturday morning radio host on KMOX. Since 2004, she has examined topics ranging from The Great Recession to the dynamics of marching band choreography at the Nine Network of Public Media.

Ansel Adams is an Inductee to the International Photography Hall of Fame and Museum. Come and enjoy a presentation by his son on his father's work and see some of Ansel's work from the IPHF Collections.
Michael Adams was born in the Yosemite Valley and was educated at Wasatch Academy in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, and Stanford University. He received a B.A. in Geography from Fresno State College, and his M.D. from Washington University School of Medicine. In addition to his private medical practice, Michael has also served as a fighter pilot for the United States Air Force and the California Air National Guard and as a flight surgeon/pilot physician. Michael is Chairman of the Board of the Ansel Adams Gallery, now in its 114th year of operation in Yosemite Valley.

Julia Margaret Cameron was one of the most innovative photographers of the nineteenth century. Although her visual techniques were sometimes questioned by Victorians who preferred a standardized approach to portraiture and storytelling, by the beginning of the twentieth century she was viewed as a pioneer who had developed the medium's expressive potential.
David Hanlon is a Professor at St. Louis Community College, where he leads instruction in photography and photographic history at the Meramec campus. He has exhibited his photographs both regionally and nationally for the past thirty-five years, and spent twelve field seasons working as an archaeological photographer at sites in the Middle East and the Balkans. Hanlon is also active as a curator and a writer about the history of the medium, his essays being published in international journals and museum catalogs. His book, Illuminating Shadows: The Calotype in Nineteenth Century America, was released at the end of 2013.

Susan Hacker Stang is an American photographer, author, and educator. She retired in 2015 after forty-one years as professor of communications at Webster University in St. Louis. Her work has been collected by more than 25 major museums and libraries around the world and appears in numerous books and magazines.

You might say there was a natural collision of circumstances between Jack's nearly lifelong love of nature, and that of photography. His wondrous journey into nature began when he attended an Outward Bound month-long wilderness course at age 16. At 18, (just over 40 years ago) he picked up his first camera, developed his first B&W print in the darkroom and quickly put his two passions together.
In recent years Jack's photography has been exhibited in Paris, Athens, Berlin, Moscow, and Malaga Spain and domestically in the US. Most recently, Jack was ranked the #2 Black and White photographer in the world by One Eyeland, which included all genres of B&W. In 2018 Jack had a Monograph book of his work published by LensWork magazine, representing eleven - six image portfolios, following the theme of "Seeing in Sixes."

A conversation with Ed Wheatley, co-author of "The St. Louis Browns - The Story Of A Beloved Team" the book that led to the EMMY nominated film on the team and his newest book "Incredible Cardinals". Wheatley will be joined by Ed Mickelson, who played for both St. Louis teams, the Browns and Cardinals.
Converse with these two baseball enthusiasts as they walk through the history of the Browns and Cardinals from the turn of the twentieth century through today. The St. Louis Browns came to town in 1902 and were the darlings of St. Louis for two decades until the greatness of the Cardinals franchise took over. The Browns became baseball's loveable losers while the Cardinals evolved into one of baseball's great franchises. Wheatley's stories and Mickelson's recollections on the field bring back the memories of these two franchises for baseball fans of all ages to ensure this history will not be forgotten.

Alan Ross is a renowned photographer whose unique vision combines traditional photographic methods with today's technology.
He honed his vision and technique while working side-by- side with Ansel Adams as his full-time photographic assistant and was integrally involved with Adams' books, teaching in Yosemite and production of fine prints. Alan was personally selected by Adams to be the exclusive printer of the Yosemite Special Edition Photograph negatives, an assignment he has enjoyed for nearly 40 years.

Dan Donovan will show and discuss many of his iconic baseball photos from over 30 years of shooting for the St. Louis Cardinals. Besides capturing peak moments, Dan is well-known for his artistic approach to documenting team history. Learn how Dan shoots baseball for the team, from both technical and artistic perspectives.
As a freshman in college in the mid-1980s, Dan Donovan was exposed to photography and never looked back. He knew right away that he wanted to be a commercial photographer. One of his first clients was the St. Louis Cardinals and he is still one of the team photographers today. Dan photographs both action and feature assignments for the team.
Besides photographing baseball, Dan shoots for other clients such as Maryville University, St. Louis Community College, Washington University, BJC Health System, Circus Flora, St. Louis Convention & Visitor's Commission and a variety of other companies, design firms and ad agencies.
Dan's specialty is photos of people in their environment, whether it is portraits of people looking at the camera or capturing real moments on the baseball diamond or elsewhere.
