Erika Blumenfeld is a transdisciplinary artist whose practice is motivated by the wonder of natural phenomena and the relationship between nature and culture. Her non-traditional research-based practice has led her to examine a range of subjects including astronomy, planetary science, ecology, the night sky among many others. Blumenfeld often works in collaboration with scientists and research institutions, including NASA, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, McDonald Observatory, and the South African National Antarctic Program. Blumenfeld is a Guggenheim Fellow, Smithsonian Fellow, and recipient of a Rauschenberg Foundation Artist-in-Residence and Creative Capital Award. She has exhibited widely in the U.S. and abroad, including a solo exhibition at Women & Their Work in 2013. Blumenfeld is featured in many books and publications and resides in national and international permanent collections. She is currently artist-in-residence at NASA Johnson Space Center, where she has been leading a team to create a 3D virtual library of NASA's Apollo Lunar and Antarctic Meteorite Collections for researchers and the public.

Sandy Carson is a self-taught documentary and commercial art photographer, film maker, musician and cyclist who grew up in Scotland, now based in Austin, Texas. He studied communications at University before dropping out to tour the UK and Europe playing in punk bands and making fanzines. After moving to the States in the '90s to pursue cycling, he travelled the world for 20 years as a professional BMX rider, where he honed his skills a photographer. His work is an intersection of two careers that have been the recipient of numerous awards. His work is published and exhibited nationally and internationally. Sandy's long-term photography projects and documentary works are represented by INSTITUTE.

Rebecca S. Cohen, a graduate of Philadelphia's Moore College of Art and Design, has explored myriad aspects of the art world. She worked for eight years as founding director of R.S. Jennifer Ling Datchuk is an artist born in Warren, Ohio and raised in Brooklyn, New York. She holds an MFA in Artisanry from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a BFA in Crafts from Kent State University. She has received grants from the Artist Foundation of San Antonio, travel grant from Artpace, and the Linda Lighton International Artist Exchange Program to research the global migrations of porcelain and blue and white pattern decoration. She was awarded a residency through the Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum to conduct her studio practice at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, Germany and has participated in residencies at the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China, Vermont Studio Center, European Ceramic Work Center in the Netherlands and Artpace in San Antonio, Texas. In 2017, she received the Emerging Voices award from the American Craft Council and was named a United States Artist 2020 Fellow in Craft. She is an Assistant Professor of Ceramics at Texas State University and lives and maintains a studio practice in San Antonio, Texas.

The focus of Mary Fischer's work is architecture. The buildings started as boxes. Lids became roofs, feet and chimneys appeared and things go on from there, changing from season to season. She builds pieces from slabs and extruded pieces of clay, at times combining both techniques. When working with slabs of clay, she frequently makes paper patterns to work out design problems. The model is then taken apart and used to cut out pieces from clay slabs. Extruded pieces of clay are cut apart and reassembled, with small slabs used to close the ends. This process is akin to playing with legos. The more pieces there are to play with, the more ideas there are to explore. Sometimes, finished pieces consist of separate parts that can be arranged in different ways, as whims dictate.

Jules Buck Jones creates art inspired by the mechanics and mysteries of the natural world. His body of work ranges from dense, organic watercolors and drawings, to large-scale performances employing costumes and puppetry. He is a founding member of the collective, non-profit, MASS Gallery and the art / science collective Animal Facts Club, both located in Austin, TX. Calder Kamin's creative reuse art projects and public workshops have traveled to museums across the states including The Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art American, The American Museum of Natural History, The i.d.e.a. Museum, and the Galveston Arts Center. Plastic Planet, her 2016 solo exhibition at Women & Their Work, was supported by a Mid-America Arts Alliance Artistic Innovations Grant and the subject of an episode for the PBS series Arts In Context. She was the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art's Art Truck Artist, the first Artist-in-Residence at the Beach Museum of Art, and Artist-in-Residence at the DoSeum, San Antonio's Children's Museum, which earned Kamin's second Mid-America Artistic Innovations Grant for the culminating exhibition. Kamin recently partnered with Disney to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Little Mermaid to inspire their audiences to transform trash into art. She sculpted a portrait of Ariel and appeared in two promotional commercials on the Disney Channel. Kamin earned a double Bachelor of Fine Arts in Ceramics and Art History from the Kansas City Art Institute. Kamin lives and works in Austin, TX.

A native of Ethiopia, Betelhem Makonnen, currently lives and works in Austin, Texas. Her formal education consists of an MFA (2019) from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago as a New Artists Society Merit Scholar and a B.A (1995) in History and Literature of Africa and the African Diaspora from University of Texas in Austin. Working with a variety of mediums that include video, photography, and installations, she researches questions on perception, presence, purpose and place within a trans-temporal and trans-locative topology that operates on the relational dynamics of a diasporic consciousness. She has exhibited both nationally and internationally. In addition to her practice she is an active member of the Austin-based contemporary arts collaborative Black Mountain Project.

Meena Matai creates vibrant and playful art. Her creative journey is as much spontaneous and playful, as it is meditative and introspective. Future time and space have been the central concern of Claude van Ligen's work since 1978. It is within this framework that he has explored the theme, 1000 Years From Now. These works reflect his deep concern for the environmental, political, and social well-being of the world in which we live. Hopefully, the work will stir viewers into thinking about their role in shaping current and future practices. Stella Alesi has resided in Austin, Texas for the last 25 years. Her work is part of many private and commercial collections. Her most recent solo exhibit took place in the summer 2019 at The Commerce gallery in Lockhart, TX. As well, the large-scale art work, "simplify" was installed in August 2019 in the lobby of The Foundry in Austin, TX. Currently a full time painter, Alesi taught photography at the Austin Community College and ran a successful photography business for over 15 years.

Alesi works across a number of styles and mediums, including drawing, painting, photography, collage and large wall works. Her practice is characterized by a willingness to try new approaches in the ongoing investigation into new materials and visual languages.
As well her painting practice emphasizes the importance of failure as a way of moving forward, and challenging established structures.
She uses the space and exploration the work provides to visualize the invisible nature of the human experience.

Underlying Barbara Attwell's work is the search for ways that all things wild - clouds, mountains, otters, ourselves - are connected in a delicious and fierce beauty. She wants to reawaken the singularity we have lost with this powerful undercurrent. In today's culture, alienation and a peculiar poverty of soul are the result of spending more time controlling nature than knowing it. We need to summon our primordial self - the one who stomps on the ground to bring rain, lays down with ear to the dirt to listen for underground rivers, and introduces themselves to trees, knowing that they respond.

Adding to Attwell's successful career as both painter and sculptor is experience in the field of environmentalism, and thus a rich and intensive knowledge of nature informs her art.

Her current works center on the wisdom, beauty, and plight of wild things, and paths back to our wild, holy home. Attwell began with a scholarship to the Houston Museum of Fine Arts from the 4th through 12th grades, followed with a BFA Cum Laude from the University of Texas. Her extensive career includes numerous shows and awards, and her work unfolds in many formats - habitat sculptures, endangered species paintings, graphic design, funerary urns, and felted works.

Originally from New Jersey, in the "garden" part of the Garden State, Rebecca Bennett made her way to Austin via CA, CO, MO, and KY in 1997. She began a professional art career in 2002. In addition to a lifelong study of art, her BA included studio art, and art history studies. Bennett's work can be seen in corporate, hotel, residential, and hospitality settings across the US and Europe.

Shawn Camp grew up in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho and completed an MFA in Painting and Printmaking at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1997. He then set out exploring, art-making, and exhibiting throughout the United States and abroad as an artist and musician. He settled in Austin, Texas where he is a member of the ICOSA artist collective and teaches at Texas State University and Austin Community College. His works have been shown in the United States and internationally and are included in numerous public and private collections. Camp's paintings, videos and sound pieces exploit the effects of context and light on our perception - contrasting the ephemeral nature of awareness with the illusion of constancy.

Sandy Carson is a self-taught documentary and commercial art photographer, film maker, musician and cyclist who grew up in Scotland, now based in Austin, Texas. He studied communications at University before dropping out to tour the UK and Europe playing in punk bands and making fanzines. After moving to the States in the '90s to pursue cycling, he travelled the world for 20 years as a professional BMX rider, where he honed his skills a photographer. His work is an intersection of two careers that have been the recipient of numerous awards. His work is published and exhibited nationally and internationally. Sandy's long-term photography projects and documentary works are represented by INSTITUTE.

Kiah Denson was born and raised in Austin, TX. She graduated from Colorado College (Colorado Springs, CO), earning a BA in Studio Art with a Distinction in Art. Upon graduation, Denson started her own decorative painting business. After a few years, she began creating fine art again, and has been steadily expanding and exploring her practice ever since. Heather Sundquist Hall is an artist based in Smithville, Texas. Her work is heavily influenced by narratives, nostalgia and details. Hall's illustrations have become pieces of her own stories whose purpose is to preserve memories like souvenirs. Much of Hall's focus is on the details. It's the subtle floral pattern on a curtain, or the kind of plaid a certain couch was that she sat on in November of 1986 that she is most attracted to explore.

Hedwige Jacobs is a Singapore born Dutch artist. She currently lives and works in Houston. Besides drawing she creates animations based on her drawings and site-specific installations. She is interested in how personal space and shared space is experienced. She holds a BFA from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague, The Netherlands and an MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia. Pat Johnson is known for her sometimes disturbing but humorous figurative sculpture and tile murals, which take cues from a grab bag of influences ranging from antiquity to popular culture. A clay artist for more than 40 years, Johnson lives and works in the small rural town of Fayetteville, Texas. She was commissioned to produce tile murals for the College Station Public Library, Monument Hill State Park in La Grange, and the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Austin, as a Texas Commission for the Arts artist-in-residence she taught and produced murals in Longview, Waco and Austin. Pat also does works on paper and has designed t-shirts for Lyle Lovett. Featured in many one person and group shows in Texas and surrounding states: including exhibits at the Art Car Museum, Longview Museum of Fine Art, McNay Art Museum and Galveston Art Center. She was selected to participate in The 35th Annual Contemporary Craft Exhibition at the Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum in Arizona and the 56th Annual Delta Exhibition at the Arkansas Art Center. Pat won "Best of Show" at the ClayHouston 2019 Regional Biennial Exhibition Timeless Clay: Future Artifacts juried by Jennifer Ling Datchuk.

Matt Lankes, a seventh-generation Texas, grew up in Austin playing soccer and watching his father take photos for the Austin American-Statesman. "I grew up around the camera," says Lankes who has made his living through photography since attending St. Edward's University, specializing in portraits for people in their environments. Lankes' work is in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian and at the The Wittliff Collections at Texas State University.

Lance Letscher is a contemporary American collage artist. Known for his meticulously constructed compositions, he sources material from a range of antique papers, discarded notebooks, magazines, and record covers. Born in 1962 in Austin, TX, he went on to receive both his BFA and MFA from the University of Texas, later apprenticing with Amado Pena. His works are in the collections of the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, the Austin Museum of Art, and the Museum of Southeast Texas in Beaumont, among others, and has been the subject of solo exhibitions at such institutions as the Tyler Museum of Art, McNay Art Museum, and the Amarillo Museum of Art. Letscher lives and works in Austin, TX.

In creating her "horizonscapes," Katie Maratta acknowledges an apparent contradiction. While the literal picture plane is incredibly small - one inch high and up to four feet long, the visual space it suggests is vast. The technique is understated and monochromatic, but the elements of the composition retain their weight and authority. Upon moving to Texas in the mid 1990's, Maratta was struck by the rich visual experience of West Texas. While these wide-open expanses and long lonely highways may be the stuff of clichéd country songs and western movies, they still evoke wonder for the artist who calls Austin home.

Bucky Miller is an artist, writer, and a 2018 recipient of the Aaron Siskind Foundation Individual Photographer's Fellowship. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at spaces such as the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston and in numerous group exhibitions. His first self-published book, The Picture of the Afghan Hound, was selected as one of photo-eye's best photobooks of 2016. Miller's work has also been featured in publications like n+1, Der Greif, The Believer, and spot. He has an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin, and resided in London as part of an exchange with the Royal College of Art program in sculpture. In 2018 he attended the Recycled Artist in Residency program in Philadelphia, PA. Bucky is from Phoenix, AZ but currently lives in Houston, TX.

John Mulvany is an artist originally from Ireland and living in Austin for 20 years. His work was featured in the Texas Biennial and he has had several solo and group exhibitions in the US and Europe. He was a founding member and editor of Cantanker art magazine for several years and currently teaches art at headwaters school in Austin. Denise Prince is an American artist working in film, photography and performance. Her career has included independent exhibitions, public interventions, performative events and street art. Influenced by conceptual and critical theory at CalArts, Prince's work explores the ways we experience ourselves in relation to Desire (the memory of the missing thing); taking into consideration (because of language) that we understand ourselves, understand others and communicate as objects. Her work seeks to make explicit that we are always reading structures of meaning in the "relation between what we see and what we know" (John Berger from Ways of Seeing). Prince is captivated by the unequivocal, veiled visual language used in advertising and she plays with signs and signifiers, pointing towards the viewer as interpreter.

Michelle Rahbar is a visual artist who lives and works in Austin, TX. She grew up amongst ?factories and railroad yards on the shores of Lake Michigan. In this environment, she ?developed a strong affinity for Northern Romanticism, the written word and urban folk tales. After receiving her BFA in Painting & Drawing, she moved to Austin and her work has been exhibited across Texas in select group shows, including the East Austin Studio Tour. She was a member of Pump Project for 7 years, her work has appeared in national art publications, and she was selected for inclusion in the Hilton's local, private art collection in Austin.

Keva Richardson was raised in a small town in the Texas Panhandle. She graduated from Texas Tech University with a degree in Education, specializing in art and languages. Following graduation she settled in Austin and began taking art classes from the University of Texas, The Art School at Laguna Gloria, and St. Edward's University. She also studied intensively with notable Texas artists, Mary Jo Harding and Jerry Seagle. She lives and works in East Austin.

Naomi Schlinke danced with the Margaret Jenkins Dance Company and the Joe Goode Performance Group, both based in San Francisco in the 1970s and early 1980s. At that time, the San Francisco art and dance scene were strongly influenced by new concepts flowing from artists such as Merce Cunningham, John Cage, and Robert Rauschenberg, many of whom emerged from the hot house for avant-garde work at Black Mountain College, NC. Much of Schlinke's approach to painting is founded on the experiences that she absorbed as a dancer in those decades. Schlinke received a B.A. and M.A. in dance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Schlinke has exhibited her work at numerous venues including the Robert McClain Gallery in Houston, The Dallas Contemporary and the MAC, Women & Their Work, Texas State University in San Marcos, D Berman Gallery in Austin, D. M. Allison Gallery in Houston, the Dougherty Art Center in Austin, and Northern-Southern Gallery also in Austin. Before returning to Texas, she exhibited with the Braunstein-Quay Gallery in San Francisco. Schlinke current lives and works in Austin.

Desiree Vaniecia is a contemporary painter who lives and works in Dallas, Texas. Raised in a matriarchal home, her work pays homage to her family and their legacy. Her distinctive personal style challenges a stereotype of Black women constructed by society and the media. Her portraiture evokes both vulnerability and strength in the figures, either through posture, physical interaction or compositional format. Future time and space have been the central concern of Claude van Ligen's work since 1978. It is within this framework that he has explored the theme, 1000 Years From Now. These works reflect his deep concern for the environmental, political, and social well-being of the world in which we live. Hopefully, the work will stir viewers into thinking about their role in shaping current and future practices. In all his work the intention is to create a matrix from which may arise emotional, metaphoric, and associative responses in relation to experiencing-and projecting thoughts about-the ever/never-changing human condition and events through time and space.

For the past decade, Sydney Yeager has painted in oil on linen, contrasting heavy brush marks with linen that is either raw or lightly touched with a wash of color. She is motivated by the tension created between the delicacy of the barely touched linen and the vigorous brush work. Her habit of painting "alla prima", or wet into wet, allows little opportunity for revision, and tiptoes along the edge of chaos. Working this way is consistent with her interest in motion and transitory forms, as each brush mark holds the possibility of altering the painting entirely.
