ARTIST'S STATEMENT: This photograph was taken while on assignment for Metronome Magazine in 1960. Velma Middleton passed away less than a year after this image was made.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:Herb Snitzer's career covers over fifty years of image-making. He worked for Life, Look, The Saturday Evening Post, Fortune, Time and other national magazines as well as for the New York Times and Herald Tribune. He became Associate Editor of America's Leading Jazz Magazine, Metronome, which enabled him to photograph and become friends with many of the great jazz musicians of that era; Miles Davis, Nina Simone, Duke Ellington, John Coltrane, and Count Basie. to name a few. His work is in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, Houston Museum of Fine Arts and Boston Museum of African American History, among others.
