Established in 1971 and recognized as the first vineyard in Sonoma County to produce a single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Alexander's Crown is perched on a hill in the south-center of Alexander Valley.

Alexander's Crown is perched on a hill in the south-center of Alexander Valley just south of Jimtown. It rises to about 350 feet at its peak with a soil composition of predominantly well-drained gravelly loam derived from both river sediments and volcanic activity.

Encompassing 63 acres, the vineyard feels the cool Pacific breezes earlier in the afternoon compared to sites farther up the valley. We use only the top 15 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon from Block 1, planted to Clone 4 in well-drained red volcanic soil, to craft this intensely flavored wine.

The Rodney Strong 2014 Rockaway Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon has wonderful concentrated flavors of black cherry, red currant and plum with a hint of sage and leather.
The earthy minerality of the wine is balanced out by notes of baking spices with a rich, complex structure and a long, lingering finish. Enjoy this wine now or cellar it for enjoyment in 8 to 10 years.

Purchased by Rodney Strong Vineyards in 2003, the previous owners of this vineyard named it Rockaway. Whether it's due to a connection with Rockaway, NJ or the rocky hillsides throughout the vineyard, we decided to keep and preserve the name since it conjured a vivid image of the land from which we knew we'd make a stellar cabernet sauvignon.

Rockaway vineyard is slightly north and east of Geyserville at the foot of the northern stretches of the Mayacamas Mountain range. It is planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, but includes all five of the classic Bordeaux varieties.

Rising up to an elevation of 750 feet, the land generally slopes northeast and southwest, with soils comprised of gravelly clay subsoil over fractured sandstone.

This well-drained, low pH earth tends to encourage the production of small-berried clusters, ideal for making bold, concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon with juicy red and black fruit character, and an elegantly round and seductive mid-palate.

Rodney Strong Vineyards' owner, Tom Klein, named this vineyard to honor the first generation of Kleins in California. They were a hard-working set of brothers that established their family's rich tradition of farming and respecting the land.

In the hills to the southeast of the small town of Cloverdale, Brothers is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec. It's on well-drained loam underlain by sandstone, shale and ancient greenstone.

Its elevations, surpassing 1000 feet, and its primarily western aspect perfectly situate the vines to capture the full warmth and light of the afternoon sun, ripening Cabernet well into the black fruit profile, with exceptional richness and creating perhaps our most opulent single vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

HISTORY
With over 40 years of experience growing classic French grape varieties in Alexander Valley, we select our best Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and other traditional Bordeaux grapes from the hills that overlook the valley, where well-drained rocky soils combine with warm, sunny days and cool nights to provide ideal growing conditions. Select areas within each vineyard are hand harvested, fermented separately and aged in the finest French oak barrels. After about six months, each lot is tasted and graded; only the highest graded wines are considered for Symmetry. The blend is then assembled, and the wine is returned to barrels to facilitate flavor integration. The wine is aged an additional 12 to 20 months, before bottling.

THE VINEYARDS
The 2015 vintage was warm overall, but cooler than the previous few years. Budbreak was very early, weeks ahead of average. Yields were very low, in some blocks half of what we'd normally harvest. The low yields led to sugars accumulating much faster in the clusters than the speed at which ripening was occurring. Cool and hot weather alternated the rest of the summer. The acidity and tannins in the berries remained firm as we were looking at the possibility of a record early harvest date, so we chose to let the sugars go, and waited for the acids to lower and for the tannins to soften. Satisfied with the flavors, and with all things in balance, we picked blocks from five different vineyards in Alexander Valley, plus our estate Cooley Ranch out in the wild hills north of Lake Sonoma, all the way through September, as the fruit from each block tasted best.

Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. The 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select is a potentially perfect wine in the making. A skyscraper that builds in the mouth with multiple dimensions, amazing layers of flavor, great delicacy, and tremendous purity, this inky purple-colored Cabernet offers extraordinarily pure creme de cassis notes intermixed with crushed rocks, flowers, sweet oak, an amazingly powerful yet impeccably balanced mid-palate, and a sweet, 70-second finish. This prodigious Cabernet Sauvignon is about as good as Cabernet can be.

1999 Chateau St Jean- Cinq Cepages (Sonoma) 750ml

This wine always reminds me of the holidays, claims Winemaker Steve Reeder, I lift the glass and welcoming aromas of Yule log, chocolate covered cherries and mocha, invite me in every time. When I taste this wine, I get a medium-bodied entry with big extract that leads to flavors of mocha, black plum, cola and bittersweet chocolate with good intensity and fruit oriented firm tannins. This is a well-structured and well-integrated wine.

1999 Flora Springs- Trilogy (Napa) 750ml

Varietal: 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42%Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, 4% Malbec. The philosophy of blending is basic to the concept of Trilogy. We approach this wine like an artist with a palette of colors. The result is a complex masterpiece of flavors and aromas that have great persistence on the palate and are tempered with a sense of elegance and finesse.

A preliminary Trilogy blend was made after malo-lactic fermentation had concluded. The wine rested quietly in small (50% new) French oak barrels until just prior to bottling. In 1998 we added Malbec to the blend for the first time and we were so pleased with the result that we included it in the 1999 version as well. The Malbec adds depth of color and an intense blueberry, black plum character to the wine.

1997's Santa Ynez Valley-Foley Cabernet Sauvignon 750l

Foley Estates Vineyard & Winery at Rancho Santa Rosa is the realization of vintner Bill Foley's dream to produce world class Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in Santa Barbara County. A historic parcel located in the Santa Rita Hills region of the Santa Ynez Valley, Rancho Santa Rosa was formerly a thoroughbred horse ranch. In 1998, Bill purchased the 460-acre property and planted to 230 acres of vineyard. Devoted to Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Syrah, the vineyard has been subdivided into 59 micro-blocks with each being farmed, harvested and vinified separately. The handsome stables have been refurbished to house the winery, with tremendous detail going into the planning of a modern facility, while honoring age-old winemaking tradition. The 1997 Fontalloro may be the finest made from this single vineyard (and I have tasted them back through the early eighties). Aged two years in French oak, there are 3,000 cases of this spectacular wine. Medium fully ruby-mahogany color. A still youthfully ripe and berry-mint bouquet heralds a wine still capable of further development. While there is a touch of acidity, the flavors are firm, minerally and laced with lovely Bordeaux-style cedar and black cherry nuances. There is good fruit in the finish, with fine tannins. A wine of structure and intensity without over ripeness.

One of the finest examples of the 1982 vintage, this wine has been a reliable performer for over a decade. It is one of only two B.V. Private Reserves made during the decade of the eighties to merit an outstanding rating. The 1982 exhibits a saturated dark ruby color with only slight lightening at the edge. 2006 Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. RP 93. It is a big, dense beauty from a somewhat forgotten Napa Valley vintage.

The final blend of Beringer Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 has aromas of currant, nutmeg and a hint of licorice. Flavors of cassis, raspberry and cocoa are surrounded by refined tannins and a remarkably elegant, supple finish.

The 2006 was made from 32% Bancroft Ranch, 24% Steinhauer Ranch, 19% St. Helena Home Vineyard, with smaller amounts from Rancho del Oso, Chabot Vineyard, Marston Ranch and Lampyridae. A big heat wave in July was the salient weather factor in this vintage. The harvest began early and continued for five weeks. Abundant smoke, chocolate, espresso roast, cassis and mocha characteristics are found in this full-bodied, powerful, layered Cabernet. Although not quite as seamless as the nearly perfect 2005 Private Reserve, it is a big, dense beauty from a somewhat forgotten Napa Valley vintage. For so many Italian families, traditions are important. For the Belmonte family, the owners of VJB Vineyards and Cellars, that's most certainly true, and it's those treasured traditions combined with the relaxed California lifestyle they've come to love that they share with guests to their winery since 2003.

The seeds of owning a winery were sown in the late 1990s when the family owned Caffe Portofino, a popular restaurant in downtown Santa Rosa. Patrons loved Maria Belmonte's food and chatting with Vittorio and his sons Henry and Victor who ran the front of the house. As Henry and Victor watched diners enjoy wine with their meals they had an idea to start making their own wine to sell at the restaurant.

The brothers made their first harvest of Cabernet grapes in 1999, but before that wine was ever bottled, Victor passed away unexpectedly. Though filled with grief, Henry, along with his parents, was determined to keep his younger brother's memory and passion for making wine alive. VJB Vineyards and Cellars-named for Victor Joseph Belmonte- was born.

In 2002, the Belmonte's sold their restaurant and began renovating an old home and garden store on Highway 12 in Kenwood. They opened this tasting room on Memorial Day weekend in 2003. There were five wines on the wine list including their flagship wine, Dante, a Cabernet Sauvignon-Sangiovese blend which they still produce.

Although welcoming guests to their storefront tasting room and introducing them to an ever growing list of Italian varietals and seeing them enjoy these wines was gratifying, the Belmonte family had dreams of creating something more. They wanted a space where visitors could experience not only wine, but also food and an atmosphere that spoke to their Italian heritage and hospitality.

In late 2010 they broke ground on their current tasting room and marketplace, first planting more vines for their popular Montepulciano and Aglianico wines, then turning the existing ranch-style home on the property into a stunning Tuscan-style villa that houses their tasting room, marketplace and deli, as well as an outdoor pizza kitchen and a fabulous piazza that is the heart of the new property.

In the summer of 2012 VJB Vineyards and Cellars celebrated its grand opening. With a portfolio of more than 15 wines including several Italian varietals rarely produced in California, coupled with wood oven pizzas and the wonderful, home style Italian food Maria is so well known for, VJB quickly became a must visit destination in the Sonoma Valley.

For the Belmonte family, the owners of VJB Vineyards and Cellars, that's most certainly true, and it's those treasured traditions combined with the relaxed California lifestyle they've come to love that they share with guests to their winery since 2003.

The seeds of owning a winery were sown in the late 1990s when the family owned Caffe Portofino, a popular restaurant in downtown Santa Rosa. Patrons loved Maria Belmonte's food and chatting with Vittorio and his sons Henry and Victor who ran the front of the house. As Henry and Victor watched diners enjoy wine with their meals they had an idea to start making their own wine to sell at the restaurant.

The brothers made their first harvest of Cabernet grapes in 1999, but before that wine was ever bottled, Victor passed away unexpectedly. Though filled with grief, Henry, along with his parents, was determined to keep his younger brother's memory and passion for making wine alive. VJB Vineyards and Cellars-named for Victor Joseph Belmonte- was born.

In 2002, the Belmonte's sold their restaurant and began renovating an old home and garden store on Highway 12 in Kenwood. They opened this tasting room on Memorial Day weekend in 2003. There were five wines on the wine list including their flagship wine, Dante, a Cabernet Sauvignon-Sangiovese blend which they still produce.

Although welcoming guests to their storefront tasting room and introducing them to an ever growing list of Italian varietals and seeing them enjoy these wines was gratifying, the Belmonte family had dreams of creating something more. They wanted a space where visitors could experience not only wine, but also food and an atmosphere that spoke to their Italian heritage and hospitality.

In late 2010 they broke ground on their current tasting room and marketplace, first planting more vines for their popular Montepulciano and Aglianico wines, then turning the existing ranch-style home on the property into a stunning Tuscan-style villa that houses their tasting room, marketplace and deli, as well as an outdoor pizza kitchen and a fabulous piazza that is the heart of the new property.

In the summer of 2012 VJB Vineyards and Cellars celebrated its grand opening. With a portfolio of more than 15 wines including several Italian varietals rarely produced in California, coupled with wood oven pizzas and the wonderful, home style Italian food Maria is so well known for, VJB quickly became a must visit destination in the Sonoma Valley.

Being the first in his family to go to college, James Frey met Andrea Lassa at university. With limited resources and much debt, they began their life together with the hope to one day own a piece of land on which they could farm, raise a family, and make a living.

In 2003, the opportunity presented itself, and James and Andrea purchased a steep and rocky site five miles outside the town of McMinnville. They moved their young children to Oregon, planted a vineyard, and founded Trisaetum (tris-say-tum) in one of the few places where climate, soil, and entrepreneurial spirit combine to produce some very special wines. Two years later, they found another piece of land twenty minutes away on Ribbon Ridge, cleared the site, planted a second vineyard, and eventually built the winery where the wines are made today.

The name Trisaetum is an amalgam of James and Andrea's two children---Tristen and Tatum.

Not having gone to school for wine, James Frey trained himself to become a winemaker with the help of mentors like Oregon's Josh Bergström and Burgundy's Jacques Lardiere.

Since the family lives on site, James and Andrea have been committed to farming in a manner that creates a healthy and diverse ecosystem. This includes preservation of the natural habitats that surround their vineyards, dry-farming, never using herbicides, never tilling, extensive composting, bee-friendly viticulture and hand-harvesting every cluster.

Today, Frey Family Wines encompass the brands of Trisaetum (Willamette Valley); 18401 Cellars (Walla Walla) and Pashey (Sparkling); all produced by James at the winery on Ribbon Ridge. Despite outside influences pushing for expanded production, staying small and very hands-on has become a core principle; therefore, production levels have remained constant at a total of around 6,000 cases each vintage.
