Judith Schaechter

Judith Schaechter has lived and worked in Philadelphia since graduating in 1983 with a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design Glass Program.

She has exhibited widely, including in New York, Los Angeles and Philadelphia, The Hague and Vaxjo Sweden.

She is the recipient of many grants, including the Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships in Crafts , The Louis Comfort Tiffany Award, The Joan Mitchell Award, two Pennsylvania Council on the Arts awards, The Pew Fellowship in the Arts and a Leeway Foundation grant.

Her work is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Hermitage in Russia, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Corning Museum of Glass, The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution and numerous other public and private collections.

Judith's work was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial, a collateral exhibition of the Venice Biennale in 2012 and she is a 2008 USA Artists Rockefeller Fellow. In 2013 Judith was inducted to the American Craft Council College of Fellows.

Don Miller

Bartram's Mirror was made in 2014 for The Center for Art In Wood's exhibition Bartram's Boxes Remix. The piece, a collaboration with furniture conservator Christopher Storb, was included in an installation in the Bartram House, Bartram's Garden, Philadelphia.

Don Miller is a Philadelphia based woodworker, instrument maker and educator. He holds a BA in German from the University of Kansas and an MFA in 3D Design from The University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is an Associate Professor in the Craft and Material Studies program at The University of the Arts and inhabits his own workshop in Germantown, PA. His work questions natural material, functional form and historical technology.

Robert Lugo

Roberto Lugo is an American artist, ceramicist, social activist, poet, and educator who grew up in Philadelphia. Lugo uses porcelain as his medium of choice, illuminating its aristocratic surface with imagery of poverty, inequality, and social and racial injustice. Lugo's works are multicultural mashups, traditional European and Asian porcelain forms and techniques reimagined with a 21st-century street sensibility. Lugo is the recipient of the 2019 Rome Prize, and was awarded a 2019 Pew Fellowship. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, The High Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and more. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Tyler School of Art and Architecture.

Helen Drutt

Helen W. Drutt English (Helen Drutt) was Founder/Director of her eponymous gallery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (1973-2002), which was among the first galleries in the United States to make a commitment to the modern and contemporary craft movement. In 1973, she developed the first syllabus for a college-level course in the history of the field. Drutt has published numerous essays; organized exhibitions, i.e. Poetics of Clay, Brooching It Diplomatically: A Tribute to Madelaine K. Albright, and Challenging the Chatelaine!; and curated American studio jewelry for the Museo del Gioiello, Vicenza, Italy (2016-18). She has built a permanent collection of contemporary crafts for The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia, and she is currently building a collection for the National Museum of Sweden. The Helen Williams Drutt Collection of international studio jewelry has been exhibited throughout the U.S. and internationally, and in 2002, 800 works entered the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Drutt has received numerous awards and three honorary degrees, from the University of the Arts, Moore College of Art, and Alfred University. She is a trustee of the Archives of American Art, Smithsonian Institution; Fellow of the American Craft Council; and a recipient of the Distinguished Educator's Award 2018, James Renwick Alliance, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC.

Stacey Lee Webber

American artist, Stacey Lee Webber was born in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1982. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts at Ball State University in 2005 under professor Patricia Nelson. Webber went on to graduate school at the University of Wisconsin, Madison under professor Lisa Gralnick, earning her Master of Fine Arts in 2008. In 2009 Webber was awarded a year long residency at Lillstreet Art Center in Chicago. In 2011 Webber moved to Philadelphia to pursue her dream of being a full time artist. After four bustling years of teaching while working as a production jeweler she made her dream come to fruition in 2015. Webber is currently working and living on the northeast side of Philadelphia where she has made a career of making and selling her own artwork and jewelry. Her work pushes the boundaries of everyday recognizable objects to the point of unidentifiable. Through material, she strives to make artwork that challenges viewers preconceived notions of the objects that surround them.

Isaiah Zagar

Isaiah Zagar is an award-winning mosaic mural artist whose work can be found on more than 200 public walls throughout the city of Philadelphia and around the world. Born in Philadelphia and raised in Brooklyn, Zagar received his B.F.A. in Painting & Graphics at the Pratt Institute of Art in New York City.

Zagar's artwork is heavily influenced by his travels and the personal connections he has made with international folk and visionary artists. Isaiah and his wife Julia completed three years of Peace Corps service in Peru in the mid-1960s, working with folk artists in the Puno region near Lake Titicaca. Soon after, they settled in Philadelphia and began their life's work of creating public art and fostering creativity in all its varied forms.

Zagar's work is included in the permanent collections of numerous art institutions, including the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and has been featured in solo exhibitions throughout the Philadelphia area. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Pew Charitable Trusts.

Eye's Gallery

Sparked by Julia and Isaiah Zagar's love for Latin American folk art, Eye's Gallery has expanded into three floors of unique handpicked from around the world. Isaiah and Julia, artists and urban pioneers, moved into a sparsely populated area of Philadelphia known then as Lower South Street, after serving in the Peace Corps as craft developers to the Ayamara and Inca people of the Andes mountains in Peru.

Paula and Robert Winokur

Porcelain is a material usually thought of as delicate, fragile and transparent. Considered the primary clay from which all other clays are derived, it comes from the earth as pure white, strong and durable. Fired it can resemble both snow and ice, depending on surface texture and treatment. Porcelain attracted me because of these qualities, rather than it's transparency. I have chosen to work with this clay because it has allowed me to explore issues in the landscape without making literal interpretations.

My work has been influenced by information gathered at various "sites", places in the natural environment that I have responded to visually. The earth itself particularly cliffs, ledges, crevices, and canyons: the effects of wind, earthquakes, glaciers and natural phenomenon such as geological "shifts" and "faults" interest me.

Ron Kent

Ronald E. Kent (1931-2018) was an American woodturner who was, as the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website puts it, "best known as a turner of remarkably thin, translucent bowls made from Norfolk Island pine, a wood indigenous to Hawaii, where he live[d]. His graceful forms are complemented by the purposeful selection of logs that include knots, textures, and contrasts; when light shines through, the intrinsic beauty of the patterned wood is revealed." Lauren Mabry

I make ceramic sculptures, vessels, and dimensional glaze paintings. My work seeks to both highlight and exploit the intrinsic qualities and process-oriented nature of ceramics. Through calculated experimentation driven by a fascination with color and visual movement, the objects I make challenge viewers to contemplate the perceived physical state of matter. These ever-dynamic compositions feature rich, vibrant glazes that remain in constant fluctuation between flowing liquids and solid structures. Sometimes the surfaces look weathered and aged, but at the same time colorfully lush and wet. The results are expressive, bold, and often dichotomous: haphazard yet highly calculated.

George Nakashima

George Nakashima was born in Spokane, Washington in 1905 to Japanese parents who had immigrated to the United States. Educated and trained as an architect, Nakashima received his Master's degree in Architecture from M.I.T. in 1930. After the Pearl Harbor bombing, Nakashima and his family, like many other Americans of Japanese descent, were placed in an concentration camp in Idaho. Here he meet a Nisei woodworker and learned the art of Japanese woodworking. Because of sponsorship by his previous employer, Antonin Raymond, George Nakashima and his family were able to leave the camp and move to Pennsylvania. In 1944, he set up his workshop on the Nakashima homestead in New Hope, PA. He maintained and expanded his facilities in New Hope until his death in 1990.

Moderne Gallery

Founder of Moderne Gallery, Robert Aibel's abiding interest in visual communication and education as well as an exceptional eye for quality and "the unusual" have built his reputation as a dealer and as a resource to other 20th century experts and to the press. His scholarly approach to the field has established him as an authority, particularly in French Art Deco, the American Studio Craft Movement, Wharton Esherick and George Nakashima. He is the author of several publications on art and communication - and on the work of George Nakashima and Wharton Esherick. He produced and directed several award-winning documentary films from 1972 - 1986. Aibel received his B.A., M.A. and Ph.D in Aesthetic Communication from the University of Pennsylvania. He was on the faculty at Drexel University and the University of Pennsylvania from 1974 to 1992.

Ford/Forlano

Steve grew up in the Midwest, and studied art in St. Louis, Rome and Philadelphia. He has been a full time studio artist for the past twenty years. He lives in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, with his partner of fifteen years. In his career, he partners with David Forlano in Ford/Forlano. Together, the duo merges nature, pattern, and structure to portray fragments of life. However, they often let purpose subside and let the piece take over.

Joseph Leroux

After receiving his MFA from The University of Madison-Wisconsin in 2010, Leroux relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and has continued working and showing extensively in the United States. A former musician who realized he "loved tearing things apart and putting them back together," Joseph Leroux harnesses the energy of live music in his sculptures. Each work subverts its intended use and becomes a prop in a parallel reality in which objects take on alternative functions. Constructed from materials both created and found-including logging saws, wood, drums, and paint-Leroux's sculptures reference the artist's upbringing in the mill town of Newton Falls in upstate New York. The finely constructed pieces and installations fuse together themes from design, architecture, music, and modern industry.

Claudia Mills

My first priority is to create a well-designed piece, a functioning floor covering that is both beautiful and durable.

In college, after exploring every course the art department offered, I landed in the weaving studio. I found weaving's combination of mathematical rigor and tactile diversity irresistible. Building on my childhood fascination with designing clothes using novelty fabrics, I began weaving with large bright prints, lurex, ripstop nylon and plaids. This exploration led to my first rag rugs in 1985.

I have now been weaving rugs for over two decades, adapting the traditional rag rug craft to my own contemporary aesthetic. As a designer I try to strike a balance between color and textural effects. Inspiration comes in many forms but foremost is the fabric itself.

Siegfried Schreiber

German artist Siegfried Schreiber was a master wood turner and particularly enjoyed kinetics. He was born in 1928. Many of the pieces he made rocked, spun or turned at the slightest touch. He preferred clear and quilted maple and pear wood. During the summer of 2007 he participated in The Center for Art In Wood's Windgate ITE International Residency Program. Siegfried Schreiber passed away May 18, 2015. His legacy is preserved in the CAW's Museum Collection.

InLiquid mobilizes and makes accessible the visual arts culture of the greater Philadelphia region in order to unite communities, establish wider audiences for artists and designers, facilitate the relationship between artists and collectors, and nurture the public's appreciation of all forms of visual art.

InLiquid was founded in 1999 by local artist Rachel Zimmerman under the observation that the Philadelphia region boasted a huge number of talented visual artists, yet only a small fraction were seen by the public, and the artists themselves were not actively engaged in dialogue and cooperation.

Jean-François Delorme

Jean-François Delorme learned the trade of wood turning, and went on to work as a turner with a focus on production. From 1990, after training with diverse artists, he also began to exhibit individual items in ceramics and glass. The French Association of Wood-Turning Art (AFTAB) encouraged him to stop working on wood turning production to focus on the creation of individual items too. Since then, he has explored the possibilities created by repeating the same bowl in two or three materials to see the contrast in materials, textures and lighting.

Robert Winokur

I don't know when it was that I became fascinated and enthralled by artwork done by children and in particular with the drawings and paintings done by them of houses. What I find truly compelling about theses works was their innocence, exuberance and spontaneity

Those qualities and elements of children's art that inspired me to work with the house surface every now and then but the sense of joy, euphoria, playfulness and spontaneity has been replaced by a kind of somber introspection. Perhaps it is the color of the clay coupled with the construction process I use to make the houses that moves me in this direction this.

Like sculptures of Equestrian Horsemen or Madonna's with Child the houses have become, a form, a kind of abstraction that expresses, on one level, a formal study of variations on the theme and, on another, an exploration of the possibilities that can be wrung from the symbol. The ladders and the asparagus are recent elements that I have taken to. They do all sorts of neat things to modify and alter the way in which the houses are seen

For me what looks right determines whether a piece "works" or not. There is no conscious intellectual mechanism and certainly no pre-existing manifesto at play here. As the little girl told the psychologist who asked her to tell him about her drawing said. "This is not a story this is a picture to be looked at".

Mi-Kyoung Lee

Mi-Kyoung Lee is a fiber artist currently based in Philadelphia. Her work focuses on the ritual and the repetitive process of art making and the relationship between tool and material, image, and content. Her work has been featured in solo and group exhibitions at the Arizona Art Museum, Cranbrook Museum of Art, Reading Public Museum, Painted Bride Art Center, Espace de Tisserands, and Busan Metropolitan Museum in Korea. She was included in the 10th International Lausanne to Beijing Fiber Art Biennale and 8th Beijing International Visual Art Biennale among others. Since 2005, Lee has collaborated with the International Opera Theater as the artistic director, costume, and set designer. She is currently an educator at University of the Arts in Philadelphia.

Rod McCormick

Rod McCormick is a metalsmith, sculptor and jeweler. His original passion was for metal (copper, bronze, aluminum, steel, silver, gold) and for metalworking (fabrication, hammering, casting, chasing, repoussé, soldering, welding). Since 1990 he has also been involved with the application of computer-aided design and computer-aided making to the work of the individual craftsperson, and now much of his work is executed using 3D printing.

He draws his inspiration from process-from 19th century sheet metal pattern-making as well as contemporary 3D computer modeling programs. His current work is jewelry-sensuous forms designed digitally and printed in plastic, aluminum and stainless steel.

Harry Anderson

Harry Anderson's work has always involved the recycling and reuse of objects. They were used first in site specific installations then in the 1980s the pieces became unified objects in the form of a lamp or light sculpture.

Harry is a full time artist whose past teaching credits include Moore College of Art & Design, Philadelphia, PA, North Country Studio Conference, Bennington, VT, Pilchuck, Stanwood, WA and Haystack, Deer Isle, ME. Anderson received his BFA from the University of Illinois and MFA from the Pennsylvania State University. He has received grants from the National Endowment of the Arts and the Pennsylvania Council of the Arts among others. Chris Berti

Ceramicist and sculptor Chris Berti (1958- ) earned his BFA from Alfred University in Alfred, New York, and his MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. Currently Professor of Ceramics at Parkland College in Champaign, Illinois, Berti has served as a Visiting Artist and presented workshops at Arrowmont, Penland, ArtPark,Cleveland Institute of Art, Indiana University, University of Iowa, and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, among others. He has received Illinois Arts Council Visual Arts Fellowships in both Sculpture and Crafts categories, and his work has been reviewed in national and international publications including The New York Times and Ceramics: Art and Perception. Helen Drutt

Helen W. Roberta Massuch

Philadelphia Magic Gardens

Philadelphia's Magic Gardens (PMG) is an immersive mixed media art environment that is completely covered with mosaics. The creator, Isaiah Zagar, used handmade tiles, bottles, bicycle wheels, mirror, and international folk art to chronicle his life and influences. The space is made up of two indoor galleries and a bi-level outdoor sculpture garden.

As a nonprofit museum, PMG celebrates art in its many forms through community outreach, public programs, hands-on activities, exhibitions, and tours. We welcome everyone to explore the space and embrace the possibility of self-expression.

Zagar has devoted himself to beautifying the South Street neighborhood since the late 1960s, when he moved to the area with his wife, Julia. The couple helped spur the revitalization of the area by renovating derelict buildings and adding colorful mosaics on both private and public walls. The Zagars, teamed with other artists and activists, transformed the neighborhood into a prosperous artistic haven and successfully led protests against the addition of a new highway that would have eliminated South Street. This period of artistic rebirth was coined the "South Street Renaissance." After the street was saved, Zagar continued creating mosaic murals, resulting in hundreds of public artworks over the next five decades.

Maria Eife

Maria Eife is a Philadelphia-based jewelry artist. She has a practice rooted in both digital and traditional craft. Maria has exhibited across the United States and in Europe, including the Smithsonian Craft Show, Sieraad Art Fair and Jewelers' Werk Galerie. John is the founder and designer of John Wind Jewelry, an internationally known fashion jewelry and gift brand based in Philadelphia. Joshua Hebbert

This ceramic vase is made by layering black and white casting slip in highly textured molds. The surface is then carved and sanded smooth, revealing the graphic black and white pattern. The separate components are combined to create an elevated orb whose equator mirrors the tilt of the earth.

Joshua Hebbert is a maker and educator living in Philadelphia, PA. He earned his MFA from the University of Colorado, Boulder and his BFA from Creighton University. He has worked for a variety of cultural craft institutions, including Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts, Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, and the Museum of Contemporary Craft. Marian Robinson

Michael Schunke is a firm believer in the value of practice and skill in glassmaking, concepts that are exemplified in his remarkable execution of hand-blown glass goblets. Josie Gluck is an American designer and glassmaker. Her focus on the meaning of matter at the intersection of art, craft and design serves as a departure point for her interest in cultivating lasting relationships between objects and humanity.

Schunke and Gluck merged practices in 2011 and formed Vetro Vero to preserve traditional techniques and express creative innovation through obsessive excellence in design and craftsmanship. Wharton Esherick Museum

The Wharton Esherick Museum is the home and studio of famed American artist Wharton Esherick, located atop Valley Forge Mountain in Chester County, Pennsylvania. It is our mission to preserve, maintain, and exhibit the artistic creations of the late Wharton Esherick so that the general public may gain enjoyment, education, and inspiration from Esherick's life work. Carol Klein

The piece entitled "Turbulence" was created in 2018. Using porcelain slip and glass fiber textile its surfaces are both fractured, twisted and deformed by enormous heat - a predictive commentary on our times.

As an associate at The Clay Studio, my early work in mold making and casting evolved from small, functional, translucent porcelain pieces to intricate, larger pieces. This work while functional, or not, has a novel composition. Using porcelain slip and glass fiber textile to create large vessels and panels, I am modeling unusual fractured and sculptural surfaces in my studio at 319 N 11th St, Philadelphia. My process is intuitive and I strive to discover new expression for these molten media.

Marianne Tebbens

My work is clay has evolved over the years from mostly functional, with the vessel as the predominant form, to an increasing number of sculptural pieces, with the human face, hands, torso, and elements of nature emerging. This evolution has occurred in conjunction with my work as a Psychotherapist and Art Therapist, as well as through my own personal growth experiences.

Marjorie Simon

I was trained as a sociologist but I've been an artist all my life. I've made jewelry since I was a child in summer camp, but detoured into academia, earning a BA and MA in sociology and teaching it at the college level for several years before returning to my true love as a maker.

I have been making jewelry and metalwork for over 40 years, studying with the excellent faculty at community based institutions and crafts communities that exist in the United States. For several decades I sold my work at craft shows and produced edition work as well as one-of-a-kind pieces.

Although I no longer travel around doing shows, I continue to sell my work in select galleries. In 1995 I began to use vitreous enamel on copper and this has become a large part of my studio practice.

Wharton Esherick Museum

The Wharton Esherick Museum is the home and studio of famed American artist Wharton Esherick, located atop Valley Forge Mountain in Chester County, Pennsylvania. It is our mission to preserve, maintain, and exhibit the artistic creations of the late Wharton Esherick so that the general public may gain enjoyment, education, and inspiration from Esherick's life work. We seek to act dynamically; connecting contemporary audiences to Esherick's legacy and brilliant creations through diverse public programs and community partnerships.

Set on 12 wooded acres, the Museum campus is comprised of multiple buildings including Wharton Esherick's Studio, which is now the centerpiece of the Museum. Esherick's highly individual, hand-built Studio was constructed over a 40-year period beginning in 1926, incorporating Arts and Crafts, Expressionist, and organic designs. Two years later Esherick began his 1928 Expressionist garage, now our Visitor Center. In 1973, just one year after its official opening as a museum, the Studio was added to the National Register of Historic Places. In 1993, the Museum was designated a National Historic Landmark for Architecture.
