Photographer's Bio: Aaron Siskind was a New York City-based photographer; in 1933 he joined the NY Film and Photo League, a group of documentary photographers focused on improving social conditions through their photography. While involved with the League, he did some of his most famous work, including photos for The Harlem Document (1937-40). He taught at the IIT Institute of Design in Chicago and at the Rhode Island School of Design. His work is in the collections of many major museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, SF MOMA, the J. Paul Getty Museum, MOMA, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In his later work he was closely involved with the abstract expressionist movement and was friends with Mark Rothko, WIllem de Kooning and Franz Kline. His photographs have been widely exhibited and his awards included a Guggenheim fellowship and a Distinguished Photographer Award from the Friends of Photography.
