Photographer's Bio: Born and raised in the Bronx, Joe Conzo Jr. was deeply involved growing up in the cultural and political experiences of South Bronx community activism, and New York's Puerto Rican cultural music scene. These two vivid realities would have a profound effect on how he viewed his environment through the lens of a camera. His seminal work on hip hop culture was featured in Henry Chalfant's film From Mambo to Hip Hop: A South Bronx Tale, and he co-authored, with New York musicologist and curator Johan Kugelberg a book on hip hop culture, Born In The Bronx: A Visual Record of the Early Days of Hip Hop. The book received worldwide acclaim and the entire collection of images featured in the publication became part of a permanent archive housed at Cornell University. The Cornell Hip Hop Collection is in the process of digitizing all his work and will be the permanent home for all Conzo's photographic images.

Photographer's Bio: Aaron Siskind was a New York City-based photographer; in 1933 he joined the NY Film and Photo League, a group of documentary photographers focused on improving social conditions through their photography. While involved with the League, he did some of his most famous work, including photos for The Harlem Document (1937-40). He taught at the IIT Institute of Design in Chicago and at the Rhode Island School of Design. His work is in the collections of many major museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, SF MOMA, the J. Paul Getty Museum, MOMA, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In his later work he was closely involved with the abstract expressionist movement and was friends with Mark Rothko, WIllem de Kooning and Franz Kline. His photographs have been widely exhibited and his awards included a Guggenheim fellowship and a Distinguished Photographer Award from the Friends of Photography.

We have found Germaine's diaries and the seven urns of her dead cats; we drink wine out of her glasses, and with the help of a medium, we summon Germaine's spirit. Agata makes Germaine's life hers.

Photographer's Bio: In 2012, at the age of 25 Bieke Depoorter was made a nominee of the photo cooperative Magnum Photos, where she was named a full member in 2016. She has won several awards and honors, including the Magnum Expression Award, The Larry Sultan award and the Prix Levallois. She has published five books: Agata, Ou Menya, I am About to Call it a Day, As it May Be, and Sète#15. In 2021 Depoorter started her own publishing platform 'Des Palais', with Tom Callemin. The relationships Depoorter establishes with the subjects of her photographs lie at the foundation of her artistic practice. Accidental encounters are the starting point, and how these interactions naturally develop dictates what follows.

In her recent book Agata, Bieke Depoorter explores the complexities of the photographic enterprise, grappling with the relationship between photographer and subject.Through a collaborative working dynamic with a Polish woman she met in a Paris strip club, she creates a small alternate universe. In the project, all players involved are thrown under the microscope: photographer, subject, audience, and, of course, the medium itself.

Image Description: Throughout Mexico's complicated, often violent history, one drink, an ancient sacrament and gift from the gods, has remained a constant in the culture: tequila. Blue Agave, the source of tequila, has been cultivated, fermented and enjoyed for over 9000 years. Over time many traditions and rituals were born, later incorporated into and modified by conquering cultures. It was in the 1500s that the Spaniards applied their brandy distillation technology to fermented agave juice to create what we call tequila.

This photograph was taken at one of the oldest distilleries in Mexico, where they still produced tequila using naked "tequileros" and methods handed down from pre-Columbian Indians.

Photographer's Bio: Menuez has worked covering stories as a photojournalist for The Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, LIFE, USA Today, Fortune and many other publications. He has explored such subjects as the homeless crisis, the Ethiopian famine, the Oakland drug wars, the Olympics, and the AIDS crisis. His work recording the rise of Silicon Valley from 1985-2000, resulted in his book Fearless Genius: The Digital Revolution in Silicon Valley 1985-2000,, an Amazon Photo Book #1 Bestseller. The lifestyle of these communities, isolated from both Romanian culture and the rest of the world, is no different than what settlers lived 200 years ago. "This photo was taken in a local restaurant in the village of Eibenthal. I saw an elderly couple and a young boy holding their grandmother's dress tenderly. I pressed the button and froze the precise moment when their hands revealed the relationships between them."

Photographer's Bio: Iva Zimova, born in Czechia, immigrated to Canada in 1982. In 1992 she was awarded the Canada Council Grant to photograph Czech minorities in Romania. Image Description: Fishermen get ready to start a new work day in crab fishing in Maracaibo lake, Cabimas, Venezuela.

Prized oil wealth once pumped from Venezuela's Lake Maracaibo has turned the vast body of water into a polluted wasteland as boom turns to bust. Nobody lives as closely with the environmental fallout as hundreds of crab fishermen who scratch out an existence on its perpetually oil-soaked shores. Production in Venezuela has crashed to a fifth of its high two decades ago, leaving behind abandoned and broken equipment.

This picture was made with an ancient wooden box camera where the photo development process is carried out within the same box.

Rodrigo Abd was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and since 2003 has been a staff photographer for the Associated Press based in Guatemala. He has worked on AP special assignments covering stories from political turmoil in Bolivia to the 2010 earthquake in Haiti to political conflict in Libya. Abd, along with fellow AP photographers, Manu Brabo, Narciso Contreras, Khalil Hamra, and Muhammed Muheisen, were awarded the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photograph for his gripping work covering the Syrian civil war.

Image Description: Mr. Bucklesy, Shelby, Mississippi, was a portrait I made in the small rural town of Shelby Mississippi in the heart of the Delta. The image always spoke to me showing the deep, powerful and beautiful culture and Mr. Bucklesy's style and the dignity and pride he effused. My book, Delta Time, published by the Smithsonian Institution Press in 1994, looks at rural Black poverty, cotton and the southern landscape with an essay by the legendary civil rights organizer Bob Moses.

Image Description: Rte. 42 in Twist, Ark., is one of many towns that comprise the Arkansas Delta. Photographer Eugene RIchardsnoticed a migration from the area. "It's not the massive migration that we all know, huge numbers of people leaving the Delta for Chicago and the cities," he said. "Mainly, the farm work was gone. And to this day, the manufacturing is gone."

Photographer's Bio: Eugene Richards, photographer, writer, and filmmaker, was born in Dorchester, Massachusetts in 1944. After graduating from Northeastern University with a degree in English, he studied photography with Minor White. In 1968, he joined VISTA, Volunteers in Service to America, a government program established as an arm of the so-called" War on Poverty." Following a year and a half in eastern Arkansas, Richards helped found a social service organization and a community newspaper, Many Voices, which reported on black political action as well as the Ku Klux Klan. Photographs he made during these four years were published in his first monograph, Few Comforts or Surprises: The Arkansas Delta.

Upon returning to Dorchester, Richards began to document the changing, racially diverse neighborhood where he was born. After being invited to join Magnum Photos in 1978, he worked increasingly as a freelance magazine photographer, undertaking assignments on such diverse topics as the American family, drug addiction, emergency medicine, pediatric AIDS, aging and death in America. In 1992, he directed and shot Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue, the first of seven short films he would eventually make.

Richards has published seventeen books. Exploding Into Life, which chronicles his first wife Dorothea Lynch's struggle with breast cancer, received Nikon's Book of the Year award. For Below The Line: Living Poor in America, his documentation of urban and rural poverty, Richards received an Infinity Award from the International Center of Photography. The Knife & Gun Club: Scenes from an Emergency Room received an Award of Excellence from the American College of Emergency Physicians. Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue, an extensive reportorial on the effects of hardcore drug usage, received the Kraszna-Krausz Award for Photographic Innovation in Books. That same year, Americans We was the recipient of the International Center of Photography's Infinity Award for Best Photographic Book. In 2005, Pictures of the Year International chose The Fat Baby, an anthology of fifteen photographic essays, Best Book of the year. Richards's most recent books include The Blue Room, a study of abandoned houses in rural America; War Is Personal, an assessment in words and pictures of the human consequences of the Iraq war; and Red Ball of a Sun Slipping Down, a remembrance of life on the Arkansas Delta.

Image Description: This photograph, taken 40 years ago, shows Mr. Chow, an old hand laundry worker, who was once an aspiring young man with a good education in China, who had become embittered by his experience in this country. He had left his wife in China and didn't see her for 30 years but eventually she was able to come meet him in America. For them, every day together was such a precious thing. Their personal story is emblematic of the history of the Chinese Exclusion Act and its consequences in the lives of countless Chinese Americans.

Photographer's Bio: I've been a photographer for over 35 years. I love photographing people and feel comfortable in any environment.

Inspired by the life and work of the poet and land surveyor, Frank Stanford, these photographs of hermetic homes and men living in solitude were taken in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and Missouri.

By capturing the foggy landscapes, cluttered interiors, and rugged men that are tucked away in the dark woods, Jasper explores a fascination with running away from the everyday. The work bounces between fact and fiction, exhibiting the reality and myth of what it means to be truly apart from society.

Image Description: This image is from "New York Arbor," a series of photographs of idiosyncratic trees that inhabit New York City; these pictures underscore the complex relationship between trees and their human counterparts. Rooted in New York's parks, gardens, sidewalks, and cemeteries, some trees grow wild, some are contortionists adapting to their constricted surroundings, and others are pruned into prized specimens. Many of these trees are hundreds of years old and arrived as souvenirs and diplomatic gifts from abroad. As urban development closes in on them, New York's trees surprisingly continue to thrive. The cumulative effect of these photographs is to invert people's usual view of their city: trees no longer function as background, but instead dominate the human life and architecture around them.

Photographer's Bio: Mitch Epstein, a photographer for over 50 years, helped pioneer fine-art color photography in the 1970s. His photographs are in numerous major museum collections, including New York's Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Whitney Museum of American Art; the J. Photographer's Bio: Henry Chalfant is best known for his photography and film documentation urban youth culture. His photographs of New York's subway paintings record hundreds of ephemeral art works that have long since vanished. He has co-authored the definitive account of New York graffiti art, Subway Art (Holt Rinehart Winston, N.Y. 1984) and a sequel on the art form's world-wide diffusion, Spraycan Art (Thames and Hudson Inc. London, 1987).

In 1983, Chalfant co-produced the PBS documentary, Style Wars, the highly considered documentary about Graffiti and Hip Hop culture . In 1993 he and Rita Fecher directed Flyin' Cut Sleeves, a portrayal of 5 street gang presidents in the Bronx. His film From Mambo to Hip Hop was featured in the Latino Public Broadcasting series, Voces in 2006-2007, and won an Alma Award for Best Documentary.

Image Description: This is an image that was taken to illustrate the famous Cat Person short story by Kristen Roupenian. The image was shot to accompany the short story "Cat Person" by Kristen Roupenian. It was published in December 2017, in The New Yorker and went viral online.

Reading the story and making this photograph was intense and provoked a lot of feelings, and made me think and respond to the specific times we are in regarding male and female's relationship.

Especially recently, in the media, things are made to seem black and white, but things are never black and white. What I loved about the story was its complexity-how things that are positive can quickly become negative. It felt like a piece of real life. I decided to use a real-life couple for the shoot, I felt it had to be real, maybe because of the kind of photographer I am. My personal work is about the everyday dramas of real life, my own family, my own flaws and ugliness and joy and wonderfulness. I am drawn to photographing real things.

During the shoot, the kisses were so alive. They were happening right in front of me. I tried to work with who they were, but also to direct them in a way that would allow me to take pictures. Some of it was also about-I don't want to sound too poetic-but it was about the conceptual space between a couple, any couple. Even if you've been married for twenty years, there's something that's always there, between two people. With the composition, I wanted to create that space.

Photographer's Bio: Fine Art Photographer Elinor Carucci was born in Jerusalem in 1971. Her work has been included in many solo and group exhibitions worldwide and appeared in publications internationally. Her work is in the collections of MoMA, The Jewish Museum, the Brooklyn Museum and many others.

She was awarded the ICP Infinity Award in 2001, The Guggenheim Fellowship in 2002 and NYFA in 2010. Carucci has published 4 monographs to date, Closer, Diary of a dancer, MOTHER, and most recently MIDLIFE.

Carucci currently teaches at the graduate programs of photography at School of Visual Arts and is represented by Edwynn Houk Gallery.

This house was adjacent to the artist's house; she spent years studying the structure, until feeling it was in its optimal state of verdant beauty, and only then did she create the image (2011).

Photographer's Bio: New York-based architectural and landscape photographer Jade Doskow is known for her rigorously composed and eerily poetic images that examine the intersection of people, architecture, nature, and time. Doskow is best-known for her work Lost Utopias, Freshkills, and Red Hook. Doskow holds a BA from New York University's Gallatin School and an MFA from the School of Visual Arts. Image Description: Unique life-sized photogram of a wild striped skunk made in the forests of New York State.

Working patiently on moonless nights, I lay out large sheets of light-sensitive gelatin silver photographic paper. Once the paper is in position, I sit in the dark and wait all night for an animal to pass by. I am in full view of the animal--this takes tremendous trust, openness and stillness.

When an animal passes in front of the photographic paper, I make a quick exposure with a flashlight--I later develop the photographic print in a traditional chemical darkroom. The photogram is then toned with pure gold, both to affect the coloration of the print and to ensure it's archival stability. The result is a unique and magical direct impression of a wild animal onto photographic paper. Each one a ghostly gift reflecting the fragility and majesty of the natural world.

Photographer's Bio: Zana Briski is a photographic artist and the Academy Award-winning director of Born into Brothels, based on her 10-year project in the brothels of Calcutta where she photographed, filmed and taught photography to the children of prostitutes. She founded Kids with Cameras, a non-profit organization that empowers marginalized children through learning photography. For her current project, Reverence, she has spent fifteen years photographing and filming insects in the wild; Reverence will be a traveling exhibit of large-scale photographic artworks, a film and music, housed in a traveling museum designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect, Shigeru Ban.

I hope that there is recognition of the impact that educational and economic barriers often prevent women from achieving their life goals. Their current status is an actual balancing act.

Photographer's Bio: Dan Nelken was born in Tel Aviv and immigrated to the USA with his family. By the time he was 11-years old, Nelken had lived in four countries where three different native languages were spoken. As a result, he developed an innate understanding of being "the other," who struggle to adapt to new circumstances. He is known for his portrait work of those outside society's mainstream. His portraits aspire to accentuate individuality while acknowledging the importance of group behaviors, habits, and rituals. His ongoing project, HeadStrong: The Women of Rural Uganda, exemplifies his commitment to this theme. He received his BFA degree from Pratt Institute. Image Description: Marco Breuer's Silent Speed series brings together interconnected groups of work and features both black and white and color works, as well as polaroid sequences and collages. Between silhouettes, logos or shadows, the work takes form through a process of subtraction, by which emulsion is removed to reveal the substrate of the paper.

Photographer's Bio: Marco Breuer, a German photographer, consistently challenges the conventions of photography by eschewing the use of camera, film and negative in favor of directly interacting with material and process. Breuer coaxes a vivid range of colors and textures from his materials by subjecting photographic paper to various forms of manipulation by hand, including burning, folding, scratching, sanding and scraping the surface, often down to the white of the paper. Image Description: Ezra Stoller (1915 - 2004) was considered to be the premiere photographer of Modernist architecture in the United States. He was commissioned by prominent modernist architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Paul Rudolph, I.M. Pei, Richard Meier, Marcel Breuer, and Eero Saarinen, to photograph their iconic buildings upon completion, such as Wright's Guggenheim Museum in 1959.

Photographer's Bio: Ezra Stoller began photographing buildings, models and sculpture as a student. In 1940-1941, he worked with the photographer Paul Strand in the Office of Emergency Management; after World War II, Stoller continued his career as an architectural photographer and also focused on industrial and scientific commissions. Over the next forty years, he became best known for images of buildings. Among the iconic structures he photographed are Fallingwater, the Guggenheim Museum, the Seagram Building, and the TWA Terminal. Often the images are as familiar as the buildings they document. Many modern buildings are recognized and remembered by the images Stoller created, as he was uniquely able to visualize the formal and spatial aspirations of modern architecture. During his long career as an architectural photographer, Stoller worked closely with many of the period's leading architects including Frank Lloyd Wright, Paul Rudolph, Marcel Breuer, I.M. Pei, Gordon Bunshaft, Eero Saarinen, Richard Meier and Mies van der Rohe, among others. Stoller died in 2004.

Image Description: Fighters loyal to Taliban commander Qari Salahuddin say their evening prayers at their temporary base in one of the homes belonging to Abdul Rashid Dostum, a notorious Afghan warlord who fled the country, on September 7, 2021. I made this picture three weeks after the fall of Kabul to the Taliban. I arrived in Afghanistan mid summer, and made the decision to stay as the Taliban rapidly took over the country, one of the few western journalists to do so. This picture was made in the home of a brutal warlord, Abdul Rashid Dostum, who fled the country and these Talibs had occupied it.

Photographer's Bio: Victor J. Blue is a New York based photojournalist whose work is most often concerned with the legacy of armed conflict, human rights, the protection of civilian populations, and unequal outcomes resulting from policy and politics. He covers national and international news stories for major newspapers and magazines, shoots documentary photo projects that accompany the conflict in Afghanistan and post-conflict Guatemala, and maintains a personal documentary practice that spans decades.

Image Description: For the series Interwoven, Meyer addresses eSwatini's (formerly Swaziland) hyper-masculine culture by photographing men and its LGBT community. The artist created unique fabric headwraps, and hand-shredded each photographic print and the fabric from the wrap, weaving them together to create a three-dimensional work that both conceals and reveals the subject's identity. This artwork is a weaving of two pages taken from the press printing of the artist's book Interwoven and combines together the portraits of two subjects.

Photographer's Bio: Martina Mullaney is an Irish artist living and working in London. In 1999, she was commissioned by the British Council to participate in the third international artists gathering in Sri Lanka. Dinner for One, a series of photographic images that address lonliness through the decline of the daily evening meal, has toured Britain and Ireland. In 2005, Mullaney continued to depict this theme, this time photographing beds in hostels and shelters for single homeless people in England and Wales. Rejecting a traditional documentary approach, she makes formal studies of temporary sleeping quarters to produce the series of large-scale colour photographs, entitled Turn In.
