Photographer's Bio:

Martínez's work addresses fractured communities in his native Mexico. He often works symbolically to evoke a sense of emptiness, absence, and pain suffered by those affected by organized crime in the region.

He is a nominee of Magnum Photos, recipient of the Eugene Smith Award 2019, and was a fellow of the Photography and Social Justice Program of The Magnum Foundation. He won 2nd Prize inWorld Press Photo's 2019 contest under the category of long term projects. Martínez was a grantee of the Magnum Foundation in the Emergency Fund and On Religion grants in 2016-2017.

He was named one of PDN's "30 New and Emerging Photographers to Watch" in 2017. In 2015, he was selected for the Joop Swart Master Class of Latin America. He was a finalist for the Eugene Smith memorial grant in 2015 and 2016. And he was nominated for the Paul Huf Award (FOAM Netherland 2017, 2018), The Prix Pictet, The ICP Infinity Awards and Tim Hetherington Trust / The Visionary Award.

Martínez's work has been featured in group shows in America, Europe, Africa, and Asia.

His work has been published by The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, NY Times Lens, Time, Vogue Italy, Vrij Nederland, and Aperture.

This is a photograph that I had originally passed over when we were selecting work for my exhibition at the Museum of Chinese in America in 2018-2019. When I shared this photo with my colleague Yuet-fung Ho, she reminded me of their story. Yuet-fung and I went to the Chow's home to interview and photograph them 37 years ago. Memories had faded, but Yuet-fung remembered them vividly:

"Mr. Chow was a very lively, articulate man. He was an old hand laundry worker, and really hated his work because he was once an aspiring young man who had a good education as a "Gum San Siu" (???). The term refers to young men who grew up in China supported by sojourning elders' hard-earned money sent from America. Mr. Chow grew up in privilege with no idea of the rough work and discrimination that his father had faced. He was very willing to follow the footsteps of his father, to go to "Gum San," or Golden Mountain, as America is sometimes called in Cantonese.

However, when he found out that his father had arranged for him to make a living washing 'stinking socks', he was angry and in despair. He felt that his whole life was ruined. This kind of feeling was very common in the Gum San Siu who came to join their laundry worker fathers.

He was also bitter about his experience in this country because he left his wife in China and didn't see her for 30-something years. Eventually he was able to apply for his wife to come meet him in America. When they finally met, they didn't recognize each other. It was a bitter life, but he did come to terms with it. For them, every day together was such a precious thing."

As Yuet-fung finished telling their story, she was struck by something Mr.Chow told her: the worst thing that could happen to him was if he outlived his wife. He was devoted and would not want to live without her.

From that moment, I couldn't get their story out of my thoughts. I kept thinking about the Chows, their long separation and Mr. Chow's lifetime of work that he hated. Their personal story is emblematic of the history of the Chinese Exclusion Act and its consequences in the lives of countless Chinese Americans.

For me, the photograph expresses Mr. and Mrs. Chow's triumph over the injustice of Exclusion. Mrs. Chow is steadfast and present, anchored to the table, looking directly at the camera. Her body language says, "I am here." The weight and gentleness of Mr. Chow's hand, his embrace, and his fixed gaze upon her hold her to him. They are inseparable. They become one.

I've been a photographer for over 35 years. I love photographing people and feel comfortable in any environment.

Inspired by the life and work of the poet and land surveyor, Frank Stanford, these photographs of hermetic homes and men living in solitude were taken in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas and Missouri.

By capturing the foggy landscapes, cluttered interiors, and rugged men that are tucked away in the dark woods, Jasper explores a fascination with running away from the everyday. The work bounces between fact and fiction, exhibiting the reality and myth of what it means to be truly apart from society.

Joseph Rodríguez is a Documentary photographer born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He studied photography in the School of Visual Arts and in the Photojournalism and Documentary Photography Program at the International Center of Photography in New York City.

Recent exhibitions of his work have appeared at Galleri Kontrast, Stockholm, Sweden; The African American Museum, Philadelphia, PA; The Fototeca, Havana, Cuba; Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, Birmingham, Alabama, Open Society Institute's Moving Walls, New York; Frieda and Roy Furman Gallery at the Walter Reade Theater at the Lincoln Center; and the Kari Kenetti Gallery Helsinki, Finland.

In 2001 the Juvenile Justice website, featuring Joseph Rodriguez's photographs, launched in partnership with the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival High School Pilot Program.

Joseph teaches at New York University, the International Center of Photography, New York and has also taught at universities in Mexico and Europe, including Scandinavia.

Rodriguez won an Alicia Patterson Journalism Fellowship in 1993 photographing gang families in East Los Angeles.

Statement from the photographer:

As a documentary photographer for over 25 years, my point of view has been to work slowly when it is possible. The domestic landscape of America has been my interest for the past two decades. Today I continue to work within the social documentary practice, covering the struggles of everyday life. As Fred Ritchin, author and president of www.pixelpress.org wrote, "Photography too often confirms preconceptions and distances the reader from more nuanced realities. The people in the frame are often depicted as too foreign, too exotic, or simply too different to be easily understood." I continue to tell stories that have had an effect on my life so that we can diminish this distance and develop a better understanding.

Photographer's Bio:

As a photojournalist for the past 25 years, Yuri Kozyrev (Russia) has witnessed many world-changing events.

He started his career documenting the collapse of the Soviet Union, the last empire of our modern times, capturing the rapid changes in the former USSR for the LA Times during the 90's. In 2001, Yuri started to cover international news. He was on the scene in Afghanistan after September 11, 2001, and lived in Baghdad, Iraq, between 2002 and 2009, arriving before the war. During those Iraqi years, he was a contract photographer for Time Magazine and traveled all over the country, photographing the different sides of the conflict.

Since the beginning of 2011, Yuri has been documenting the "Arab Revolutions" and their aftermaths in Bahrain, Yemen, Tunisia and especially Egypt and Libya.

Yuri has received numerous honors for his photography, including several World Press Photo Awards, the OPC's Oliver Rebbot Award, and the ICP Infinity Award for Photojournalism. In 2008 he received the Frontline Club Award for his extensive coverage of the Iraq war.

His extensive body of work documenting the "Arab Revolutions" received wide industry recognition. "On Revolution Road" - on the revolts in Egypt, Bahrain, Yemen and Libya made for Time magazine - won the 2011 Visa d'or News at the international festival of photojournalism Visa pour l'Image.

At the Prix Bayeux-Calvados his work "Dispatch from Libya" won both the Trophee and the Public Prize. In 2012 his work was awarded at the World Press Photo Contest and he was named the 2011 Photographer of the Year in the Pictures of the Year International competition.

Yuri's work has been widely exhibited. Some of his more recent exhibitions are "Russie[s]", a unique showcase of work from Russia, exhibited together with Stanley Greene in Paris at La Maison de la Photographie Robert Doisneau and the group exhibition "Révolutions Arabes" curated by Alain Mingam.

Between 2011 and 2012, his work "On Revolution Road" has been shown in ten different countries. In 2014, Yuri covered the conflict in eastern Ukraine and in 2015 the migrant crisis in Europe.

In 2018, Kadir van Lohuizen and Yuri Kozyrev were the laureates of the 9th Prix Carmignac for Photojournalism, where they undertook a year long expedition through the Arctic, documenting the consequences of the climate crisis.

Brandon Thibodeaux is a photographer based in Dallas, TX, who creates portraits in the documentary tradition. In addition to his assignment work and creative commissions, he explores life in the American South. He is also a guest instructor with the Santa Fe Photographic and Maine Media Workshops.

His project, In That Land of Perfect Day, has been featured by numerous publications including American Photo Magazine, PDN, Port Magazine Oxford American, The New York Times Lens Blog, Time.com and The Washington Post.

His work is included in the High Museum of Art, the Museum of Photographic Arts, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and various private collections.

Photographer's Bio:

Kadir van Lohuizen (The Netherlands, 1963) has covered conflicts in Africa and elsewhere, but is probably best known for his long-term projects on the seven rivers of the world, the rising of sea levels, the diamond industry and migration in the Americas. He started to work as a professional freelance photojournalist in 1988 covering the Intifada. In the years following, he worked in many conflict areas in Africa, such as Angola, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Liberia and the DR of Congo. From 1990 to 1994 he covered the transition in South Africa from apartheid to democracy.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Kadir covered social issues in different corners of the former empire. In 1997 he embarked on a big project to travel along the seven rivers of the world, from source to mouth, covering daily life along these lifelines. The project resulted in the book "Rivers" and "Aderen" (Mets & Schilt). Kadir has received numerous prizes and awards in photojournalism. In 2000 and 2002 Kadir was both a jury member of the World Press Photo contest and on the supervisory board of the World Press Photo foundation. In 2004 he went back to Angola, Sierra Leone and the DR of Congo to portray the diamond industry, following the diamonds from the mines to the consumer markets in the western world.

In that same year, Kadir initiated a photo project together with Stanley Greene and six other photographers on the issue of violence against women around the world. After hurricane Katrina destroyed New Orleans, he made several trips to the USA to document the aftermath of the storm. In the summer of 2010, to mark the fifth commemoration of Hurricane Katrina, Kadir exhibited images of Katrina's devastation and the aftermath in a truck-exhibition that drove from Houston to New Orleans, a project in collaboration with Stanley Greene.

From 2011 to 2012, Kadir created Via PanAm; a visual investigation on migration in the Americas. In 12-months, he travelled along the Pan American Highway from Terra del Fuego in Patagonia to Deadhorse in Northern Alaska. With the project Where will we go, Kadir looked at the global consequences of rising sea levels caused by climate change.

Kadir's environmental projects continue with 'Wasteland', where he investigates in six megacities (Jakarta, Tokyo, Lagos, Amsterdam, São Paulo and New York) how they manage or mismanage their waste. For this project he uses photography, video, drone footage and audio. For this project he received 1st World Press Photo Prize in the Environmental category. In 2018, Kadir van Lohuizen and Yuri Kozyrev were the laureates of the 9th Prix Carmignac for Photojournalism, where they undertook a year long expedition through the Arctic, documenting the consequences of the climate crisis.

Kadir is a frequent lecturer and photography teacher and is based in Amsterdam.
