A flight for two in your "Spirit of Igor" Sikorsky S-39 and a short tour of Fantasy of Flight. Winner will need to provide their own transportation to Fantasy of Flight and schedule the day/time with owner/pilot Kermit Weeks.

The Spirit of Igor is the only airworthy model of her type and the oldest flying Sikorsky in the world today. It was painstakingly restored by Dick Jackson of Rochester, NH. The project began in the 1960s, with the hull of NC-50V being discovered in the Alaskan bush. 40,000 hours and nearly four decades later, the S-39 flew again. Dick Jackson had worked with our museum for years during this challenging effort to ensure every detail to be as historically accurate as possible.

The Spirit of Igor was named for the Spirit of Africa, an S-39 owned by Martin and Osa Johnson, and for Igor Sikorsky himself. The giraffe spotting on the fuselage is authentic to a specific species. It was projected onto the hull in order for the painting to be completed.

This item has been donated by Kermit Weeks, an American aviation enthusiast, pilot, and aircraft collector. Kermit maintains the largest private collection of vintage aircraft in the world, most of which are at his Fantasy of Flight facility in Polk City, Florida. The collection contains over 140 civilian and military planes including rare originals as well as reproductions of historic aircraft, such as the Spirit of St. Louis, Howard Hughes' Sikorsky S-43, the Osa's Ark II (a virtual clone of Martin Johnson's zebra-striped S38) and of course, the Spirit of Igor that he has so generously offered to our auction listings in support of our museum. Since acquiring both Osa's Ark II and Spirit of Igor, Kermit has become a dedicated ambassador of our museum as well. A fire pit with seating is nestled next to the pond, and near the cabin for your s'mores, and story-telling campfire adventure. Let us know if you plan to use - we'll leave some firewood for you! The Blue Door Cabin owns the land surrounding the pond - all trails on the west, east and north side of the pond are for you to enjoy. However, the trail next to the entrance gate will quickly lead you off property. The garage near the gate is rented and not available for Blue Door Cabin guests.

This is a poster of the dust jacket for Martin's 1924 adventure book. It details the Johnson's first expedition in Africa.

Martin and Osa's books had lavishly decorated Dust Jackets for multiple US & Foreign editions. This one was created by Alfred G. Skrenda, an artist known for his art deco flair who went on to have an amazing Pulp Fiction cover art career in the 1930s.

This poster is 12" x 18, and comes rolled with non-damaging magnetic hanging frame.

Roy Schiffer Pinney was a professional photographer, herpetologist, writer, journalist, war correspondent and pilot. As a boy, Pinney had entered the contest to be one of the 3 Boy Scouts who accompanied Martin + Osa Johnson on safari in 1928. Though he didn't get selected, photography and wildlife works would define the rest of his life.

This beautifully framed image is a sanctioned reproduction of the first color portrait ever taken of Osa Johnson. Pinney was the photographer on this shoot that was a feature story about the release of both Osa's book and the coming film "I Married Adventure."

This 12" x 18" poster was created from an original photo of Osa Johnson's Sikorsky Amphibian "Spirit of Africa" is shown parked in Chanute after purchase, and before the African Flying Safari.

The airport was renamed "The Martin Johnson Airport" in 1935 after Martin conducted some flood relief in Chanute using Osa's plane to get supplies to regional areas cut off by high waters. Vern Carstens, the FOB at the airport who also piloted for the Johnson's on their African Flying Safari, was a driving force in the naming of the airport and later when the museum was opened in 1961. This image was one of the first postcards created in the 1960s to raise money in support of the museum.

This auction is for a 12" x 18 Poster created using an original copy of "Real Life Comics #43: Golden Age Adventure Comic 1947 - True Adventures of the World's Greatest Heroes!" from our museum's archives.

Martin + Osa Johnson had their own comic series, "Danger Trails" in the 1930s that ran in newspapers around the US. They have also been featured in international strips from the 1920s until present. Real Life Comics was published 10 years after the death of Martin Johnson and mentions that his "gallant widow" Osa is carrying on the brave tradition of exploration and adventure that Martin had established.

Three Piece Osa Johnson Africana Collection

Following the loss of Martin in 1937, Osa Johnson's only true love and lifelong partner in world exploration, she set out to document their adventures together in what would become two classic bestselling works, I Married Adventure (1940) and Four Years in Paradise (1941). Not only did both titles become standard and well known adventure tales, each book was originally published in zebra stripe and giraffe spot cloth covers that have been seen extensively over the past 80 years in fashion and interior design photo shoots, as well as weddings, graduations, and other special life events. Each title in its original first printing is highly sought after in large part because of these covers.

3: Circa 1730 steel engraved and hand colored map of Africa. This lovely decorative map of Africa measures 8 x 6 ½ inches on a slightly larger folded sheet.

Artist Biography

Roy William Thomas Jr. (born November 22, 1940) is an American comic book writer and editor, who was Stan Lee's first successor as editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics. He is possibly best known for introducing the pulp magazine hero Conan the Barbarian to American comics, with a series that added to the storyline of Robert E. Howard's character and helped launch a sword and sorcery trend in comics. Thomas is also known for his championing of Golden Age comic-book heroes - particularly the 1940s superhero team the Justice Society of America - and for lengthy writing stints on Marvel's X-Men and The Avengers, and DC Comics' All-Star Squadron, among other titles.

Among the comic characters he co-created are Wolverine, Vision, Doc Samson, Carol Danvers, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Ultron, Yellowjacket, Defenders, Man-Thing, Red Sonja, Adam Warlock, Morbius, Ghost Rider, Squadron Supreme, Invaders, Black Knight (Dane Whitman), Nighthawk, Havok, Banshee, Sunfire, Thundra, Arkon, Killraven, Wendell Vaughn, Red Wolf, Red Guardian, Daimon Hellstrom, Brother Voodoo and Valkyrie.

Thomas was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2011.

Roy is also an Honorary Trustee of this museum, and that one reason we always get such cool auction items from him!

12" x 18" Poster of the Book Cover for Martin Johnson's Over African Jungles

The book was published in 1935. This poster of the dust jacket is being produced from the original copy in our museum's archives.

Artist Biography
Edward Shenton was an illustrator, author, editor, poet, and teacher. He was born in Pottstown, Pa. November 29, 1895 and grew up in West Philadelphia where he attended high school. At age 13 he was confined to his home for two years with an illness that gave him time to read and teach himself to draw. Most of his drawings were of medieval knights in armor. Returning to school he became the editor of his high school magazine and yearbook, where he contributed both in writing and illustrating. He began studies at the Museum School of Art in 1916 but dropped out in 1917 when he and his brother joined the 103rd Engineers, AEF and served in France during World War I. His drawings from the front lines were published in The Philadelphia Record in 1919. On return, he enrolled at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts where his teachers included illustrators Thorton Oakley, George Harding both from the original classes of Howard Pyle. In 1922 he won the Lee Prize and later two Cresson Traveling Scholarships to study in Paris in 1923-24.

Career
Between 1923 and 1976, he illustrated over 130 books including The Yearling, Tender Is the Night, Green Hills of Africa, Freedom River Florida 1845, This Is My Country, The Flaming Sword, and three volumes of the Rivers of America Series. He also illustrated "The Long Trains Roll" by Stephen W. Meader (Harcourt, Brace and Co.) in 1944. During the 1930s he was the "house" illustrator for Scribner's magazine, where he drew interior illustrations as well as covers such as this one for Martin Johnson's OVER AFRICAN JUNGLES.

This beautiful leather throw/blanket was produced by the Chicago & Tanzanian-based artifact and textile company Ashro. The company was a vendor for the museum for many years and they put on a wonderful sales fundraiser for our museum in 2002 that had hundreds of carvings and fine textile art.

This throw is 50" wide and 61" long.

Miriam Haskell was an American designer of costume jewelry. With creative partner Frank Hess, she designed affordable pieces from 1920 through the 1960s. Her vintage items are eagerly collected and the namesake company, which first displayed her jewelry in New York City's McAlpin Hotel, continues. It is currently listed as Haskell Jewels, LLC.

Haskell's pieces and Osa Johnson's Jungle Jewelry & OSAfari fashion line were surely in many of the same shops and stores throughout the country.

The bracelet comes in a hand-painted box crafted by artist Karol Good of Chanute. Karol & her husband Dr. Richard Good were in the group of local supporters that helped Osa's mother Belle Leighty & Martin's sister Freda found this museum in 1961.

Kwele Ekuk Mask From Congo

This mask was collected in Congo, Africa and donated to the store to support the museum.

This mask measures 20" by 14."

No camels were made into lamps on Martin + Osa Johnson's safaris...but one stunning camel skin lamp did get donated to support our museum that is filled with images of camels from almost every African safari Martin and Osa made between 1921-1934.

This Camel Skin Lamp was created in Oman and stands 23" tall, 16"round. It has been wired for electricity.

This item was donated by Comforts of Home, an amazing antique and home decor shop that once graced the main street in Chanute, Kansas. We hated to see the store close, and we appreciate owner Martha McCoy donating more than a few items to our Osa's Ark Museum Store and this auction to support the museum.

Poster: Danger Trails Comics Map of Africa

Between 1933 and 1936, Danger Trails: The True Adventures of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Johnson ran in newspapers across the country and in at least three countries.

This map was one of two maps that were write-in gifts to readers.

This is perhaps the most iconic photo of Osa Johnson.

This photograph has appeared on either the cover or inside pages of over a dozen books dedicated to women explorers and adventurers.

During their first safari in Africa, Osa had a chance to ride domesticated Grevy zebras at the Hook Farm at the base of Mt. Kenya. The photo is so famous and so well documented we can even tell you the name of the zebra was "Bromar" and it's surely the most iconic photo of him!

This photo is 11 x 14 inches and comes in a thick display mylar sleeve for immediate display.

This was Martin + Osa Johnson's 2nd Camera Car, reportedly Martin's favorite ride. It was used on their 2nd and 3rd African expeditions, spanning 1924-1928. The maps used for the background are a collage of original maps in the museum's collection covering Osa's hometown of Chanute, Kansas.

This is a professional publicity photograph taken by Renalto Toppo at his famous New York Studio in 1932. It was used to advertise the Johnsons' upcoming flying safari and today remains one of the most recognizable "couple photographs" of Martin and Osa.

Martin + Osa Johnson on the Serengeti

This is likely tied with the famous Toppo Studio image of the Johnson's in their flight gear for the favorite "couple" photo by Martin + Osa fans. The original photo was commissioned in a hand-colorized print by Martin Johnson to give as a gift to his best friend. His friend was the local fire chief and for years the print was displayed in the fire station in Chanute. Today it hangs in the Johnson Gallery of our museum.

In this shot, Martin and Osa Johnson are atop Spirit of Africa during a Champions of Sports Series Photo Shoot for Wheaties Cereal.

This is one shot in a series the museum has in our collections of Martin and Osa atop Osa's giraffe-spotted Sikorsky S-39 Amphibian plane. When Wheaties Cereal put Martin and Osa Johnson on the cover of their new "Champions of Sports" box series in 1934, they chose photos from this series. The Johnsons were the first married couple to appear on a cover of Wheaties for the Champions Series.

During a 2020 renovation at the museum, we imprinted a copy of Martin and Osa's own signatures from our archives with this image and installed it at the new front entrance.

Karol and her late husband Dr. Richard Good were in the group of dedicated Chanute citizens that banded together in the late 1950's to help Osa Johnson's mother Belle Leighty and Martin's sister Freda create this museum.

Over the years, Karol's paintings, sculptures, paper works, textiles and drawings have helped raise much needed funds for our museum, especially at our Artisan driven annual Safari High Tea that Karol's daughter Diane works so hard on each year!
