Alexander Tovborg, Humanity Is At Stake, 2016 Signed Lithograph, 28 by 24 inches, edition 28 of 35.

Taking as his starting point history, mythology, religion, as well as written and oral narratives, Alexander Tovborg draws on the stories that have come before us in order to explore and re-contextualise classical archetypes. In looking at the ways through which we have built our narratives in the past, he proposes a new reading of our current social and political situation, examining who we are and where we find ourselves today.

His laborious and layered practice is such that he begins to embody the people that he is focusing on-going through the arc of their stories, adopting their beliefs, their causes and their pain. Using borrowed and created symbols in a rhythmic and insistent manner, Alexander Tovborg creates a kind of visual language which runs throughout his work, spanning different series and figures. This visual language connects the work, but also connects the differing narratives, reminding us of the similarities which run through many of the world's origin stories.

This emphasis on the various symbolisms that are found throughout these ancient narratives is something that Tovborg sees as essential to his practice, as he asserts the weight and power that images have within our contemporary culture, as well as how easily they can be manipulated and used against us. Acting on their behalf, Tovborg engages in an effort to keep their meanings open, giving us each the chance to see in them all that they encompass.

Alexander Tovborg (b.1983, Denmark) graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 2010. With solos at Overgaden (Copenhagen) and GL Strand (Copenhagen), Tovborg has shown at ARKEN (Ishøj), ARoS (Aarhus), IMMA Museum of Modern Art (Dublin), Spiritmuseum (Stockholm), Holstebro Kunstmuseum (Holstebro), KØS (Køge) among others. His works are represented in the public collections of Hammer Museum (Los Angeles), ARKEN (Ishøj), ARoS (Aarhus), and Museet For Religious Kunst (Lemvig). In 2019 he will open an exhibition at Rudolph Tegner Museum (Dronningmølle).

This Owl is made of clay and sculpted one at a time. After drying for a week it is bisque fired and then ready to be glazed and fired a second time in my custom raku kiln. Raku is done outside under a lean-to as it produces smoke in the final firing. The owl is taken red hot out of the kiln at 1850 degrees and placed in a container with sawdust and whole oats and newspaper. The fire interacts with the copper in the glaze and the unglazed bottom of the piece is smoke colored. The copper gaze is always unique as the fire licks the surface and creates a pattern.

Brandon Boyd's work as a singer, songwriter, both as a solo artist and with his platinum-selling rock band, Incubus, is well documented and universally acclaimed. But now his other life's work -- that of a painter -- has been garnering increasing attention and devoted audiences of its own.

This necklace looks best on a short-mid length chain so it can rest near the collarbones and décolletage, but looks wonderful longer too.

How it's Made:
First, the artist applies the pattern/image to the metal (sterling silver in 18 gauge thickness) that is hand-drawn onto metal or tape.

They used a jeweler's saw and a very tiny saw blade (5/0) to carefully hand cut the image out and add any characteristics, such and fur or horns.

The artist sands and files the outside edge gently to remove the sharp edges and also the front and back of the piece to achieve a smooth canvas for the patina.

They then gently hammer the piece to give it the rippling effect.

The pendant then gets a bath in liver of sulfur, is washed off, and dried, then fine steel wool is used to remove some of the oxidation caused by the liver of sulfur.

After the first bath in the liver of sulfur (that smells as bad as the name suggests), the sterling chain is attached, and handmade jump rings attach it to the pendant.

Our California sea lion patients are rescued from the beaches of Malibu when they fail to thrive on their own. California sea lions are very communicative creatures. They can often be heard barking like dogs in their large social groups made up of hundreds of sea lions. When they're not lounging on beaches and rocky shores, California sea lions are hunting at sea for several days at a time. They are fast swimmers, reaching top speeds of 25 miles per hour (40 kmph) and can stay underwater for up to 10 minutes in pursuit of prey.
