Celebrating Bernie's Recovery
Any AmountTHIS OPPORTUNITY HAS CLOSED, to make a gift please visit www.icrfonline.org.
In Appreciation of Bernie Teig's Miraculous Covid Recovery
First, on behalf of myself and my family, I would like to say thank you for your kind wishes and prayers throughout this tough time in our lives. When things were so difficult and truly uncertain, your candles and messages brought positivity into mine and Bernie's life. Of equal importance, his medical providers, both in the hospital and rehabilitation rebuilt his health and have kept him strong through his battle with COVID-19. Without them and you, we may not have been so fortunate.
In honor of Bernie and his miraculous recovery, we very much encourage you to join us at a "virtual table" at the Israel Cancer Research Fund virtual gala on August 5th. I serve on the Board of Directors for the CT Chapter where I have been able to witness the life saving work this charity does every day.
Supporting cancer research has been a cause near and dear to my family for years, as I know it is for many of you. Please join us by making a contribution at any level you may wish. Our goal is to raise a collective $7,500, which will lead us on the path to successful cancer research in Israel.
We thank you most kindly,
Sheila and Bernie Teig

Honor of Rabbi Mitch Hurvitz
Any AmountTHIS OPPORTUNITY HAS CLOSED, to make a gift please visit www.icrfonline.org.
Honoring Rabbi Mitch Hurvitz
(Temple Sholom)
Rabbi Mitch who has served more than ably as spiritual leader of the Temple for a quarter century is passionate in his support for cancer research in Israel.
It is our goal to reach at least $10,000.
Please read the Rabbi's message.
Thank you,
Stuart & Bran Berni
In the Rabbi's own words:
The Jewish notion is that the preservation of life is the highest goal and we are to take every ethical action possible by which to protect lives.
This is why the Talmud notes that if a new generation should discover medical responses different and more effective than previously known, we are obligated to pursue this course of new medical knowledge.
The Commandment as quoted in the Book of Leviticus says: "Do not stand idly by the blood of your neighbor".
Working within the field of medicine is considered an extraordinarily sacred pursuit and throughout Jewish history there have been medical breakthroughs discovered and implement by Jewish doctors and researchers.
That Israel has become a leader in global medical research is consistent with our prioritization of the mitzvah of Pikuach Nefesh.
On a personal note, cancer has been a particular challenge to my own family. We were blessed that ultimately Roseanne recovered, her life spared.
But, the living nightmare of your loved one's mortality being seriously threatened is something that leaves an indelible mark on your soul.
And, for those who have lost loved ones to disease, we know how our hearts remain forever scarred.
Perhaps it is at synagogue that we should most host forums on medicine; the sacred space by which our prayers can be integrated with our holy actions to fulfill the mitzvah of Pikuach Nefesh.
I hope you will be able to join me in the support of the Israel Cancer Research Fund.
Thank you.

Remembering Cousin Ellery
Any AmountTHIS OPPORTUNITY HAS CLOSED, to make a gift please visit www.icrfonline.org.
Remembering Cousin Ellery
Ellery Plotkin, age 67, passed away at a much too young age!
A graduate of the University of Connecticut and Hofstra University School of Law and a specialist in bankruptcy law, Ellery resided in Fairfield, CT where he was committed to community service.
He was a former cubmaster, a member of two School Space Committees; a former Board member of Sullivan McKinney Elder Housing; a Democratic Town Committee member and former chairman of the Committee; a former Representative Town Meeting member (10 years); a former Commissioner on the Fairfield Parks and Recreation Commission (10 years); and a member of two Penfield Pavilion Building Committees.
He was awarded the 2016 Eunice Postal Community Service Award from the Fairfield Democratic Committee. He was remembered by his peers as "not seeking recognition, serving with humility and perseverance", "being widely recognized as a passionate Democrat, and compassionate attorney, and a kind friend with a wonderful sense of humor", "although we didn't always agree, we always engaged in respectful dialogue".
Ellery was dedicated to his work and totally dedicated to his family! He was genuine, what you saw was who he was. He was kind and generous with a quirky sense of humor. He would look up at you with his big brown eyes and you would think, how could this innocent looking person ever stir up any mischief! He did stir up mischief at home, sometimes tormenting his sisters, and, because of that innocent look, he never got caught as the instigator! He loved the horse races in Saratoga surpassed only by his love of Hope Street Pizza!
He put the needs of others before his own; he was there with advice when you needed it! When he did take time for himself, he rooted for his beloved NY Mets and the UCONN Women's basketball team.
Ellery died from pancreatic cancer.
It is our intention that by raising funds ($5,000) for ICRF we can help find a way for others who develop this dreaded cancer to outlive the disease!
Please join David and me in honoring the memory of our very special cousin, Ellery Plotkin.

The Israel Cancer Research Fund is an organization that is very special to me. I have served on the board for several years because I believe in what ICRF does.
Unfortunately, there has been cancer in my family. Both my mother and my husband died from this devastating disease. It is important for the ICRF scientists to do their research, so cures can be found. Future generations must not experience such painful losses.
Please join me at my virtual table at the Virtual Gala on August 5. If you can, please support this worthy cause. I hope together we can raise $7,500.
Thank you.

Myrna lived her life as if every day was her last. She had a passion, commitment and energy that caused her to do so much. She made you feel important and always had time for you.

In Honor of Ruth Bader Ginsburg
I joined the CT board of the ICRF because I wanted to learn more about medical and scientific research. I also wanted to give back and collaborate with good and interesting colleagues. It has certainly met all those goals and more.
I am hosting this table in honor of the Notorious RBG. Having followed her career since she was first appointed to the Supreme Court, I have been awed by her eloquence. She is a lion of the legal world and role model for women everywhere.
When it comes to cancer, I think of her as having 9 lives, as she's survived several serious bouts. This could only be due to the great strides in cancer research that have been made. I fervently hope this incredible woman survives her current bout.
Godspeed, Justice Ginsburg!

Lee and I are remembering, with bittersweet sadness, all those beloved family members, friends, and associates - too many to name -- whom we have lost to cancer.
At the same time, we are celebrating and honoring so many whom we know and love as they persevere in treatment for or in remission from this dread diagnosis.
Please join us as we support Israel's best and brightest cancer researchers. ICRF is proud to have sponsored the research that led to Israel's first Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2004. Israel's scientists' contributions to understanding the basics of cancer have already been translated into drugs that keep so many alive across the world.
Our donations will both support the pride of Israel and the hope of all mankind that this disease will be defeated in our lifetime.
Help us exceed our goal of raising $7,500 for the Israel Cancer Research Fund!

In Memory of Bella & Shalom Gross
It is a great privilege to be part of this ICRF event and to be able to honor the memory of our parents Bella and Shalom Gross.
Two people who survived the Holocaust in their early twenties and built a family with love and understanding. They both worked hard and saw their primary goal, in the education and the future of their children. They loved Israel, loved and helped the community in which they lived and were very proud of their family and heritage.
Shalom passed at the much too early age of 68 from stomach cancer, which we all hope the research in Israel will help conquer.
Their children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and extended family are cherishing their memory.

On Wednesday August 5, 2020, award winning comedian Jason Alexander will host the Israel Cancer Research Fund's first-ever national online event - Ribbons of Hope a Virtual Celebration.
When asked how he decided to lend his name in support of ICRF Jason Alexander responded: "They say laughter is the best medicine. But you know who says that? Comedians. The best medicine is actually the product of brilliant cancer researchers working diligently and tirelessly in labs in Israel and across the world. That's why I am so honored to contribute in some small way to this important cause."
My family and I are long-term supporters of ICRF. I am sponsoring a virtual table for the event and I'm writing to invite you to join me from your own living room. Like me you have supported ICRF generously for many years. This year, despite the Covid -19 pandemic, is no different. In fact this year ICRF needs our support more than ever to continue its life saving work.
So join my table and join me, Jason Alexander, journalist Tom Brokaw, actors Eugene Levy and Bonnie Hunt and Israeli scientist and Nobel Laureate Professor Aaron Ciechanover at this virtual celebration to benefit ICRF and life saving cancer research in Israel.

Dear friends and family,
We are pleased to invite you to a special event produced by a very special organization.
The Israel Cancer Research Fund (ICRF) does extraordinary work supporting brilliant Israeli scientists whose discoveries have literally changed the course of cancer treatment worldwide.
On Wednesday, August 5 at 7:45 PM Eastern Time, the ICRF will broadcast "Ribbons of Hope" a virtual celebration. Jason Alexander (aka George Costanza) will host the event. Appearing along with him will be Bryan Cranston, Eugene Levy, Bonnie Hunt and several other celebrities and cancer research activists.

In Honor of Jason Fischel, MD
The CT Chapter of ICRF is proud to recognize Jason Fischel, MD, as its 2020 Young Leadership Honoree.
A Stamford native, Jason returned home to practice Emergency Medicine. His commitment to life-long learning and community involvement has inspired him to seek subspecialty board certification in EMS medicine and a Masters in Public Health degree while working full time as an emergency physician and EMS medical director.
No stranger to illness and loss in his professional life, the personal experience of cancer's ravages hit home when Jason recently lost his dear mother to this dread disease.
Knowing that millions are losing their fight against cancer is little comfort to Jason, and his commitment to ICRF represents his determination to support the fight for a cure.
The love of Israel, where his parents first met, is a cornerstone of who Jason is. The mission of ICRF to fund basic cancer research in Israel offers Jason a natural opportunity to combine this love with his effort to do all he can to eradicate cancer in our lifetime.
Jason is joined in his dedication by his wife, Robin (along with their two young children), his father, and his siblings in this commitment to ICRF's mission.
It is in his mother's memory that he supports the fight against cancer, which she fought against so bravely and courageously.
The CT Chapter applauds his community leadership and is proud to name him our 2020 Young Leadership Honoree.
