Her work is known for its synthesis of scientific interest with poetic phrasing. She was married to the publisher, Frank Nelson Doubleday. She participated in philanthropic work and died in while on special assignment as a commissioner for the Red Cross in Canton, China.

Studies in the Life History of the Song Sparrow in 2 volumes by Margaret Morse Nice (1960s, originally published in 1937 and 1943) Paperback, very good condition. This is a classic of ornithology literature. Nice (1883 -1974) was an American ornithologist, ethologist, and child psychologist who studied the sparrows for 8 years to research this extensive study of the life history of the song sparrow. Nice worked on the life-histories of birds at a time when most of the focus was on collection, description and geographic listing. Her work on the song sparrow is considered a landmark. Ernst Mayr wrote that Nice almost single-handedly initiated a new era in American ornithology and the only effective counter movement against the list-chasing movement.
