The Golf Classic is dedicated to the memory of Dr. John Proos, a devout parent of three Laker graduates, volunteer, physician and friend of Lake Michigan Catholic Schools. Dr. Proos, who passed in 2014, was the 2000 "Laker of the Year" and showed his love of Catholic education in southwest Michigan through his 30 years as board member and President of the Lake Michigan Catholic School Fund (formerly Twin City Catholic School Fund). For 30 years, "Doc" Proos donated his time to provide free athletic physicals to all Laker athletes and families.
As a school, we had 50+ teams participate in athletics in the 2019-2020 school year ranging from Varsity Sports Teams down to our 3rd & 4th Grade Basketball Teams. 88% of our Middle and High School students participate in sports. The Dr.John Proos Laker Athletic Golf Classic raises money to allow those students to participate in sports without having to pay to play from 4th to 12th grade. These funds provide teams with equipment, uniforms, maintaining sports fields including painting lines and gasoline for mowers, and more. Lake Michigan Catholic is the only school in the area that all athletic teams do not have to "pay to play".
On Friday, August 21, members of the Lake Michigan Catholic community are invited to tee off on the beautiful and challenging course at the Lake Michigan Hills Golf Club. Lake Michigan Catholic's Annual Golf Classic was established in 1992 to support Laker athletics. Participants will enjoy an outdoor lunch and 18 holes of spectacular golf. Other features include drink tickets, door prizes, and hole prizes. All with CDC safety precautions in place.
Our goal is a wonderful day of golf and fun for everyone and ultimately benefit the young men and women who participate in Laker athletics. On average, the Golf Classic has raised $25,000 per year for Laker Athletics. Our 2020 goal is to add $35,000 to the Athletic Fund. This will help supply Laker athletes with safety equipment this year including hand sanitizer, thermometers, masks, disinfectant, etc. Other safety precautions will result in additional buses needed for away matches, securing safe practice venues and more.
For those planning to attend in person, here is the planned schedule for the day!
We can't wait to have you support whether on the course, or from the comfort of your own home/environment. Every little bit helps fund the legacy that is Laker Athletics! GO LAKERS!
