Help support Child Life Services at Cleveland Clinic Children's.
Child Life Specialists are health professionals who assist children and their families as they prepare for and cope with pediatric medical and emotional experiences such as surgery, hospitalization, tests and procedures. We've discovered that when children understand what is happening to them, they cope more effectively and experience less psychological trauma and anxiety.
Why is support needed for Child Life Services during the COVID-19 pandemic?
Now more than ever, philanthropic support is needed to further the work of the Child Life Specialists as they help manage the stress of a patient's diagnosis and treatment, in addition to the precautions surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic.
Being admitted to the hospital already causes anxiety and fear for young patients. The added COVID-19 precautions increase the stressors related to a stay in the hospital. One example is the visitation protocol. For the safety of the patients, families and caregivers during these unprecedented times, pediatric patients are currently permitted two parents or guardians to visit daily during their stay. After 9 p.m., overnight visitation of pediatric patients will be limited to one parent -unless a compassionate exception applies. This shift in visitation guidelines further underscores how the caregivers at Cleveland Clinic Children's are viewed as extended family members, offering an extra layer of support.
