Good nutrition is important for everyone, especially during our COVID stay-at-home period! Our Koret Animal Resource Center rabbits, porcupines, chinchillas, ferrets, and others love their chewsticks, which are important for physical health, nutrition, and mental stimulation. Your donation provides an entire month's worth of chewsticks for our ARC animals! And after you make this donation, go treat yourself to a chewstick of your own and get that chocolate chip cookie you've been wanting all day!
Regular exercise is important at all times, but especially during the current COVID stay-at-home orders. The smallest mammals in our Koret Animal Resource Center, from chinchillas to hedgehogs to guinea pigs, require exercise too! Your donation provides new exercise wheels for our ARC mammals for an entire month; who needs a Peleton when you can have an exercise wheel!
Our larger animals such as giraffes, horses, zebras, and domestic steer get great enrichment from the "Feeding Balls" which animal care staff fill with food and treats, and then hang or place inside enclosures. These balls can be easily moved within different parts of enclosures, and raised or lowered as needed to encourage activity and exploration. But the balls also need to be replaced regularly, a large animals are also very strong! Your donation supports the purchase of an entire new ball for our animals to enjoy.
We have a stunning array of reptiles and amphibians in our Koret Animal Resource Center - and as "cold blooded" animals, they need external support to keep warm, especially in foggy and cold San Francisco weather! Your donation provides UVB bulbs and heat-producing bulbs that keep our herpetology collection warm and toasty for an entire month. They might not get a tan, but they'll be comfortable whatever the weather outside.
The San Francisco Zoo and Gardens is home to the largest Magellanic Penguin colony of any zoo in the world. And those penguins eat a lot of fish! Your donation provides fresh fish for a week to the entire colony - which is especially needed now, when many of the penguins are hatching eggs while they shelter in place!
Remember that old saying, "Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and he eats for life." Our Black Bears, Grizzly Bears, Fishing Cats, River Otters, and Wolverines have all become skilled fish catchers! The live carp placed in the pools in their enclosures are both important food sources as well as highly engaging enrichment tools. Our morning Grizzly Bear fish feed is one of the most popular visitor attractions at the Zoo. Your donation provides a week of live carp for all of these carnivores. And each donor who supports this fund-a-need item will receive a reserved viewing spot for two people at the morning Grizzly Bear fish feed of their choice!
Our big cats, other large carnivores, and barnyard animals need fresh straw for warm cozy beds to nap in all year 'round! Your donation enables our dedicated animal care staff to maintain a supply of straw for one month for all of our animals who use that straw for bedding, nests, ground cover, enrichment, and so much more!
Our Children's Zoo and daily "Barnyard Stampede" are always highly popular with the Zoo's youngest guests. Our barnyard animals are the stars of this part of the Zoo, and we take great pride in providing them with fresh food and lots of healthy enrichment. One important part of their daily wellness care is access to clean dirt for their yards and sleeping enclosures. But dirt isn't cheap! It costs $1,500 each year to ensure an ample supply of fresh new dirt for the barnyard crew on a regular basis. Your donation ensures that all of the barnyard animals will have access to fresh dirt from January to December!
Being 20 feet tall and standing all day long can get pretty tiring! Our giraffe herd works hard all day grazing in their savanna, so we like to provide them with large comfortable soft rubber horse mats to ensure a good night's sleep. Our kangaroos aren't nearly as tall as the giraffes, but their long legs get tired from all that hopping too, so they also love to have horse mats to rest on. Your donation provides a half year's supply of new rubber mats for either our giraffes or kangaroos!
Our rhinos Gauhati and Boone love their enrichment toys. Many of you have spent hours watching Gauhati chase his ball across his enclosure, or Boone engaged with the various enrichment devices in his yard. These giant rubber balls are ENORMOUS, and they need to be super strong to stand up to an adult rhino charging at them! Your support provides a year's worth of ball toys for one of our rhinos. This donation comes with the opportunity to have a personal keeper talk and VIP experience with one of our rhinos.
