"Golden Tail & the Azure Crown"

Hand-painted on silk, two 20x30" pieces, framed

These silk paintings of hummingbirds were created through a collaboration between our Assistant Director of Art Programming, Doni Funkhouser, and master artist Alma Nicholson . Drawn from an illustration in the 1874 book "Humming-Birds" by Mary and Elizabeth Kirby. This book showcased the "jewels of the avian world" with amazing accuracy and technical brilliance. Mary and Elizabeth were naturalists and gifted illustrators during the Victorian era. These sisters introduced the natural world to women and children during a time when women's contribution to the sciences often went unacknowledged. The image is now in the public domain courtesy of the Biodiversity Heritage Library, an open access digital library for archives via the Smithsonian Institute.
