Food, family and Philadelphia are the first three things that come to mind when trying to describe who I am or what I'm about. Hello. My name is Jared Johnson and I am the Executive Chef and Food Services Manager at the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House.

Born and raised in Lansdowne, PA into a large, multi-ethnic family, the kitchen was the central location in my house growing up. My mom and grandmother made everything from scratch. I could see firsthand and from an early age the process of producing great meals and the way it brought us all together. In addition to the food prep I learned about gardening and the value of fresh ingredients. Food preservation was also an important component of my childhood; methods of pickling, canning and smoking helped us enjoy the fruits of spring and summer well into the colder months of fall and winter.

I started working in restaurants at 15. By the time I finished high school I was already a seasoned line cook and had also learned the art of pizza making. Rather than going off to college, I attended the "School of Hard Knocks" working in various restaurants in and around the city continuing to hone my craft and learn new techniques. At 25, I took a position as a production chef doing corporate catering for several Center City law firms and from there my career really took off. In 2003 I started my own boutique catering company with my wife, Denise. After 7 years we sold the company and made our way back to Philadelphia to start a new chapter. In 2012 I was named Executive Chef for the STARR Restaurant Group facilitating world class events in some of Philadelphia's most prestigious and storied cultural institutions. While with STARR I spent a great deal of time mentoring Philadelphia's under-served youth with culinary aspirations through a non-profit organization called C-CAP (Careers through Culinary Arts Program). While working with these budding culinarians I realized that I could use my years of experience and advanced skill set to give something back to the community. This growing passion to give led me to RMHC of the Philadelphia Region where they were undergoing a huge renovation and needed a chef to develop and run their food service program; caring for and feeding more than 100 families with seriously ill children, 365 days a year. It seemed like a match made in heaven and now with 18 months under my belt I can honestly say that coming to be a part of RMHC was the best move of my career!

Coach Fran Dunphy Biography:

Fran Dunphy Former Basketball Head Coach Temple University Francis J. Dunphy has been a part of collegiate basketball for six decades. He started as a student-athlete playing basketball for La Salle University, co-captaining the team his senior year. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1970, and his first coaching position was as an enlisted assistant coach at the United States Military Academy. From 1975-79, he served as an accounting teacher, guidance counselor and head basketball coach at his high school alma mater, Malvern Preparatory School. In 1979, he was named assistant coach at La Salle, and one year later he joined the coaching staff at American University. He returned to La Salle in 1985 until 1988 when he went to the University of Pennsylvania. In 1989, he was named head coach at Penn, where he led the team to 10 Ivy League titles in his 17 years there. In 2006, Dunphy became the first person to serve as a head basketball coach at two Philadelphia Big 5 institutions when he was named head coach at Temple University, succeeding Hall of Fame coach John Chaney. Dunphy, known as "Mr. Big 5", has worked at or attended four of the Big 5 schools. At Temple, Dunphy had a successful tenure, including being named Big 5 Coach of the Year in five of his 13 seasons and Conference Coach of the Year four times. In 2018, he was awarded the national Dean Smith Award. In 2019, he won the Temple University honors Professor of the Year and received an honorary degree from Temple and the Gene Bartow Award. His group has discovered all of the known neuroblastoma susceptibility genes and his group has also identified many of the oncogenic drivers of the disease. Dr. Maris has steadfastly sought to translate these discoveries to the clinic using precision medicine approaches and more recently by co-leading a multi-institutional St. Baldrick's Foundation-Stand Up to Cancer Pediatric Cancer Dream Team project to bring the fields of genomics and immunology together to combat childhood cancers, and more recently a Beau Biden Moonshot Center Award to extend this rapidly evolving area of research. Dr. Maris is an internationally recognized practicing pediatric oncologist who cares for children with refractory neuroblastoma from around the world, typically in the context of early phase clinical trials. Dr. Maris has been continuously funded by the National Institutes of Health and many other funding bodies. Jon Runyan is an American athlete (former Philadelphia Eagle) and politician who was the U.S. Representative for New Jersey's 3rd congressional district from 2011 to 2015. Before entering politics, he was an American football offensive tackle in the National Football League, where he played for 14 seasons. Jon holds 5th on the list of most consecutive starts in the NFL. He started in 193 games during his NFL career and 144 of these starts are with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was also a participant in the 2003 Pro Bowl following the 2002 NFL season.

Jon was drafted by the Houston Oilers in the fourth round of the 1996 NFL Draft and later played for the Philadelphia Eagles and San Diego Chargers. Runyan was the last active NFL player to have played for the Oilers. He played college football at Michigan where he was a 1995 All-Big Ten Conference selection. In high school, he had been an All-State (Michigan) selection in basketball and two-time state champion shot putter. He retired at the end of the 2009 NFL season and launched his campaign for Congress against incumbent freshman Democrat John Adler, winning the general election on November 2, 2010.

Beginning in 2016, Runyan became the Vice President of the Policy and Rules Administration for the NFL.

Loretta Runyan Biography:

Loretta Runyan is the wife of former NFL player Jon Runyan. She has 3 children, Jon Runyan Jr., Bella, and Alyssa. Jon Jr. was drafted in April by the Greenbay Packers after a college football career at University of Michigan where his father played as well. Alyssa is a rising junior at Purdue University studying physical therapy and Bella is a 2020 high school graduate who will attend Villanova University this fall and participate in the women's basketball program.

Loretta served as a police officer in Houston, TX for 11 years and shined at the White House as a Congressional wife while Jon served 2 years as a member of Congress.

Loretta's son Jon Jr. was diagnosed from a young age with dyslexia and she dedicated many challenging years to working on his performance, and teaching him to have confidence in his abilities and skills. Her husband was also diagnosed with dyslexia and she knew that succeeding was possible but that it would take her being hands on, persistent and relentless to get him through this.

Kathy Killian Biography:

Kathy has worked for the Phillies for more than 32 years, and today is Vice President, Administration for an organization that has about 1,200 employees, including players and game-night workers.

She began a career at the Phillies through her time as a summer intern at The Steeles, a company that marketed postcards designed by Dick Perez, an artist who has worked for the Phillies and the Baseball Hall of Fame. Killian worked for the Steeles as a "Girl Friday" for about six months until Perez recommended her to Phillies executive Dave Montgomery, who brought her on board as an intern in the 1985 season.

Over the years with the Phillies, Kathy worked as a ticket sales representative and manager and director of group sales. In November 2008, right after the Phillies won the World Series, she was named to the newly created role of Vice President of Human Resources and Customer Services. She is the second female Vice President in franchise history, following Bonnie Clark, who became Vice President of Communications in April 2008.

Among her myriad accomplishments, Ms. Abraham was one of the first District Attorneys in the country to institute a thorough and comprehensive investigation of sexual abuse committed by Catholic Clergy in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. That investigation, lasting over 5 years, implicated at least two Cardinals and over 125 priests engaged in either sexual misconduct or sexual crimes against adolescents and youths of both genders in addition to the massive cover-up of these crimes by Archdiocesan Hierarchy. It has also been used as a template for similar investigations across the country. Chef Angelo Lutz Biography:

Angelo Lutz said it best when he took the witness stand in his own defense during a racketeering trial back in the summer of 2001. "I'm a cook, not a crook," he said. While the jury and the judge thought otherwise, Angelo is now back in South Philadelphia embarking on a new career and putting that other business behind him. Someone once said the secret to life is to figure out what it is that you love to do and then find a way to get paid to do it. Angelo Jenaro Lutz loves two things - cooking and talking. Both come naturally. He learned his way around the kitchen from watching and listening as his mother and grandmother prepared Italian meals while he was growing up. The connection to food was familial. His maternal grandfather, Charles P. Giunta, was the co-founder of Giunta Brothers which imported Italian food products to Philadelphia. Charles Giunta also patented one of the first noodle cutting - pasta making - machines. His gift of gab, like his ability in the kitchen, is also instinctual. A street corner raconteur, Angelo knows how to tell a story and loves being center stage.

Born and raised in the heart of South Philadelphia, Lutz is a graduate of St. Monica's grammar school and St. John Neumann high school. While he toyed with the idea of college - he was accepted at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and took some classes at Temple University - the lure of casino gambling led him to Atlantic City.

In the early days of the casino gambling boom on the Boardwalk he worked as a dealer at Playboy, Trump's Castle and the Sands. He later worked in the carpet installing business and as a caterer where his gigs included serving breakfast and lunch daily to the National Board of Medical Examiners in Philadelphia. He was also active with the Philadelphia Mummers, doing a star turn as the "Golden Buddha" in one of the New Year's Day parades. Convicted of gambling and extortion and sentenced to nearly nine years in jail, Angelo doesn't try to sugarcoat his past. While he might disagree with the extortion charge, he readily admits that he was into the bookmaking scene. In fact, government witnesses at his trial and his judge at sentencing said that Angelo knew more about how to run a sports betting operation than most of his co-defendants who clearly outranked him within the organization and whose crimes were more serious. He spent more than seven years as a "guest" of the federal government. But all of that is prologue. Now he's doing what he loves. An avid fan of the Food Network, he is constantly taking ideas about how to prepare food, adding a twist or a spin, throwing in some unexpected ingredient and coming up with a new dish. Most days you can find him walking South Philadelphia's Italian market, talking with the guys who run DiBruno Brothers cheese shop or Giordano's produce store, looking for the freshest ingredients and imagining how to turn them into an unforgettable dining experience. Everything that Angelo Jenaro Lutz has learned, everything that he has done, has become part of his personal recipe for life. And out of that he's created Cooking with The Kitchen Consigliere and The Kitchen Consigliere Cafe.

Jimmy Murray's Biography:

Born in West Philadelphia, he is a 1960 alumnus of Villanova University. In 1969, Jimmy joined the Philadelphia Eagles' public relations staff. Five years later, Murray was named general manager for the Eagles where he served for nine years and took the franchise to the first Super Bowl appearance against the Raiders in Super Bowl XV.

During his 14 years with the Eagles, Murray distinguished himself as a leader in a number of projects that served the community. In addition to co-founding the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House, he helped start the Eagles Fly for Leukemia campaign. He also persuaded many of his peers in the NFL to become involved in the unique Ronald McDonald House concept across the country. He remains involved in the Philadelphia community and has won a number awards for his charitable work.

Jim Murray is currently the president of Jim Murray Ltd., a sports promotion and marketing firm located in the Philadelphia area for over twenty-five years.

Susan Campbell Biography:

Susan Campbell joined the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Philadelphia Region as a volunteer in 2001 and became a Weekend Manager the following year. In 2004, she joined the staff full-time as the Director of Administration and was promoted to Associate Director in 2006. In 2007, Ms. Campbell became the Executive Director and then transitioned to Chief Executive Officer in 2018.

Ms. Campbell is responsible for the overall operations of our seven major programs including our two Ronald McDonald Houses, three Ronald McDonald Family Rooms located at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children, Ronald McDonald Camp, and a Ronald McDonald Care Mobile. In addition, Ms. Campbell is responsible for strategic planning as well as managing the organization's financial and development plans including an annual operating budget of more than $6.5 million dollars. She is also responsible for the current expansion project at our Chestnut Street House location and the related $55 million capital campaign.

Prior to joining the Chapter, Ms. Campbell spent eight years at the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, Office of General Counsel. She holds a bachelor's degree in Finance and in Law and Public Policy and a master's degree in Public Administration.

The Impact of Adopt A Room:

In 2019, we opened the Jill and Alan B. Miller Tower and began welcoming families into our new rooms. We now have more than twice as many rooms as we did before the expansion, so your support is more critical than ever. By partnering with our Adopt A Room program, you are doing more than making sure families have a place to sleep each night-as important as that is. You are making it easier for children to get the treatment they need and have their families close by their side, every step of the way. You are eliminating many of the financial challenges that come with traveling long distances for medical care, so that parents can focus on their child's treatment. You are also providing parents with the support and rest they need to be there for their seriously ill children and their siblings.
Last year, we had more than 2,137 family stays, with families traveling from 47 states and 29 countries. Families from Pennsylvania accounted for 32% of all stays and
19% came from New Jersey. While the average length of stay was 12 days, many stayed longer, with 365 nights being the longest length of stay.
Thanks to generous donors like you, 99% of these families believe that because of the House, they were better able to maintain their well-being while their children received care, and 98% believe that staying at the House helped to reduce their stress levels. Finally, 96% feel that the Philadelphia Ronald McDonald House provided them with support that they would not otherwise have received during their children's care.

Meet the Ortiz Family:

The Ortiz Family began staying at the Ronald McDonald House on Chestnut Street this spring, when 5 year-old Jonathan began treatment at CHOP for a brain tumor. The family is originally from West Palm Beach, Florida, so the House has been an important resource to keep the family close together during such a scary time. Jonathan's sister, Grace, has been keeping busy at the House, acting as our very own ambassador, starring in her own social media show called Grace's Place to keep the world up-to-date on what's happening in the House during the pandemic.
