Hunter Stephenson paints most often directly from observation. She uses shape and color to create the illusion of space and volume. As a painter, she attempts to give the viewer just enough information to help the human eye "read" the image.
Also a working journalist, Hunter "reports" on her subjects, which range from casual still lifes of objects or food to more complex landscapes that often integrate architectural features with natural surroundings. In each of her paintings, she attempts to describe the subject through the use of color and shape with a limited number of brushstrokes. Her oil palette, which has remained unchanged in 25 years, is often described as "fresh" and "clear" with the use of bright cadmiums, ultramarines and cobalts.
A native of Eastern North Carolina, Hunter is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.F.A in studio art, and UNC-Greensboro with an M.F.A. in painting. Her paintings are in a number of private and public collections in the Southeast.
