He went to Johnson and Wales Culinary College and graduated cum laude. Fernandez went to the 5-star Harrah Casino and Hotel in Lake Tahoe, Nevada before going to Gilbert/Robertson Corporation. He opened numerous restaurants across the country and one of those restaurants, Hogates, seated 1250 people, next to Durham, North Carolina at the Hilton. It sold and he went to Oklahoma City as a food and beverage director, then to Duke University and East Carolina University as executive chef before retiring. He began painting first with Bob Ross classes and watercolor with Judy Dye. Fernandez took numerous individual classes in oil, acrylic, pastels, encaustic, and mixed media with Gail Ritzer at the Greenville Museum of Art Center for Art Education.
